Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Welcome @ReminiscingDad, and congrats on all your DS’s acceptances. What a great list. There are four Cornell admits on the decisions list (found at http://■■■■■■■/class2020 or on the 2020 Decisions Thread); including three who have committed there.

Sad about your S’s dear friend, @fretfulmother. My opinions about your questions: 1) “resent” seems strong, but if you substitute “remember” I think the answer is yes; and 2) it will probably not help other kids from the waitlist. Waitlists are so deep and the top unis factor a very precise number of kids who won’t come so they expect this anway. (I think it’s a different answer for holding onto merit scholarships, however).

@mstomper and @livinginLA, the excitement and the nerves of parents waiting for decisions is palpable. It’s hard to watch from the sidelines.

@frenchtoastlover, there is certainly nothing inferior about Middlebury. It’s a terrific option. Still, glad that you rank other schools higher so you don’t have the hassle of changing start dates.

@kittymom1102, we just loved Vandy when we visited. That’s a big “win some.” Or, it’s a winsome win some.

@EastGrad Ah, by “inferior” admission I meant February vs. Fall admission. Sorry for the confusion!

@frenchtoastlover, I don’t know if you need financial aid, but I have heard from folks here on CC that spring admits usually don’t get as good FA. Not sure if that is the case with the MB Feb admit.

@EastGrad Believe me, we are definitely counting our blessings

@ReminiscingDad Welcome! And welcome to any other new posters this week.

@LKnomad Congrats on UCLA and sorry to about Pomona and Mudd. So many ups and downs for these last two weeks of March.

@palm715 My S was also admitted to Rochester. Would love to hear your pro and con list.

@AsleepAtTheWheel Sounds like a treasured time with your S14. I’m trying not to be jealous. I’m sure neither of my kids would take a trip like that with me.

Congrats to everyone with good news today.

@kittymom1102 thank you, and congratulations on your son’s admittance to MIT and Vandy! Does he know where he will attend? A couple of top choices? My son didn’t apply to Vandy, although we had great recommendations from engineer friends who attended Vandy and recruit engineers from it for their very successful company in the NE. I personally know Vandy’s vaccine research program, one of the very best in the country and in the world.

Hey @mommdc! My family has weird circumstances, but unfortunately I didn’t apply for financial aid because it seems that we won’t qualify (again, weird circumstances, although if you’re interested in the specifics feel free to PM me). Luckily, due to a $100k college fund started by my grandparents, financials won’t be an issue.

@ReminiscingDad sounds like your son has excellent choices, BK is nothing to sneeze at!

Welcome @ReminiscingDad !

@ReminiscingDad At this point his top choice is MIT, although he wants to take a look at Columbia’s Fu because of the Davis Scholar program got him curious. S now has the highest opinion about Vandy but will not go as far as to choosing it over MIT. I would be very surprised if he ends up not going to MIT, but you never know.

Congrats @AnxietyAttack77 ! BU is my alma mater and BME was my major! Go Terriers!

@ReminiscingDad my son got a diversity invite for Cornell also. He is still debating whether he wants to do the diversity overnight or Cornell Days or possibly both? The diversity program asks the student to pick a date a couple weeks out for the plane tickets.

@kittymom1102 thanks for the suggestion, my son is also reluctant to make plans until he has heard from all the schools he applied to, by March 31st. He doesn’t want to make plans until then, and doesn’t like to miss school. He’s excited about Cornell though!
Just read about the discussion above regarding BME and wanted to add my two cents: if considering a career in vaccines/drugs development, definitely at least a masters degree will be needed to be competitive when applying to biotech/pharmaceutical companies.

Thank you @EastGrad I will check the list!

Welcome @ReminiscingDad My DD will not be able to attend Cornell events due to the schedule conflict. It seems that 3 schools she was admitted to have admitted students days on the same weekend. We plan to probably attend MIT event in the beginning of April, but still didn’t make travel arrangements yet since we are waiting on one more school releasing decisions next week.

@ProbDeferred Chemical Engineering is very rigorous, well respected and always in demand type of engineering.

@fretfulmother : Well, UChi doesn’t hold it against you, even if they do remember, they still want what a great kid can add to the school community, so rest now. Can’t say about MIT, as daughter rejected it outright because her brother attends.

As for Princeton, I don’t think they consider the kids to be cut from the same cloth at all, so dynamic their understanding of the unique energy and value of each student’s contribution. So, I can’t see that being the case.

Thank you!!! Those are helpful answers

@PAO2008 thank you, and @mommdc yes! absolutely the Banneker Key is nothing to overlook, the Clark engineering school is also wonderful, growing, and it’s close to home. @Dragonflygarden thank you for the information, yes, ideally one should attend both programs but it’s going to be a lot of time out of school.

@ProbDeferred My DH and I both have BME degrees. I think it depends on your interests and where you ultimately want to work. We both had interests in healthcare and medicine. BME tends to be specifically geared towards the medical device industry, but the curriculum (at least ours) also required us to take classes in electrical, mechanical and manufacturing engineering. I’m sure the curriculum has evolved and differs from school to school - some probably allow more flexibility in concentrating on a specific subject. I wouldn’t say one engineering degree is better than the other - it depends on what you want to do with it.

@Ballerina016 good luck to your daughter next week and congratulations on the great choices she has!
