Thank you @Sophmore1!
Just found this, and absolutely love it!
@dyiu13 : āMay I ask the hive for advice onā¦ā
I am ok as long as we are not a coven. My alter southern white matron persona may be offended being called a witch.
That worked out, I think, to Sās benefit: heād had Brandeis on his CA list back when he did his EA applications, but didnāt end up completing the app for awhile. By the middle of October they were recruiting him just a bit, and he ended up with a fee waiver. And at this point, an acceptance-- I guess itās a thing with the āshowing interestā-savvy schools?
Missed a day and found 111 posts to read. So congratulations to all!
Hello all! You might have remembered my post about a thousand posts back that I and my daughter are graduating this year haha. I am graduating my associates degree with a 4.0 GPA and I was rejected originally to my state school Business program shockingly after spending 20 years in the corporate and education worlds as an Executive Admin. Well after contacting the school to ask how I could have been more competitive, they opened my case and found that they rejected my application because of an old clause⦠I was apparently short one credit in pre-calculus. This actually was not true, because I had emailed them a couple of times to make sure that my current precalc class would work for 2016 entry period. Long story short they changed the entire clause for Community College Prerequisites to include classes in spring, so future applicants now had a better chance at getting accepted and I am accepted and most likely going to the state school! Moral of the story is that itās okay to ask and sometimes it can change a rejection to an acceptance!
And also, my D16 committed to Rutgers University for the fall. Done!
Congrats @cakeisgreat to you and your daughter. Youāve helped a lot of future students and should be very proud of that.
Wow @cakeisgreat, that is wonderful news. Congrats to you and your daughter!!
@kittymom1102 Vandy was number one choice for my D for several years. When she was younger I tried talking to her about MIT and she would hear nothing of it because āno one has even heard of that schoolā. Last year it was the first visit we made and I thought for sure she still loved it. Then after other tours it was still up there but she chose to ED another school and thatās where she got in. I was a bit sad as I love Tennessee and was hoping she would return to the state (we used to live there). Itās a great school, with a really nice campus. We felt welcome there and students were very helpful.
Thatās great @cakeisgreat! Congrats to you both!!
Thanks @RyanG1207! Weāre going for an open house in April. And yes, @ReminiscingDad sheās definitely thinking at least a masterās degree, maybe PhD.
@fretfulmother DD turned down a couple schools that DS had on his list. We have a memorable last name, and I was worried schools might hold it against DS. Looks like it had absolutely no effect.
@livinginLA After his experience at Vanderbilt, S will forever recommend every strong student/applicant, DD for example, to apply to Vandy.
Thatās why he invited the AO to his school, so more kids can hear about the school and apply. He loved it that much.
Congrats on your daughter early acceptance to her top school. What a blessing
We went to a lovely wedding yesterday & yes, there were a boat-load of posts to catch up on.
Congrats to new acceptances!
Welcome to new members & welcome back @cakeisgreat - I remember your situation & glad it worked out for both you & DC.
For those with rejections- hoping the alternative choices end up being the best choices for DC!
The next 10-11 days are going to be doozies! Hang tight & wishing everyone the best!
Just as an item of general interest: the facebook page mentioned a bit upstream is up and running. If anyone has any questions, feel free to PM @LKnomad, @oneundecided, or me.
@cakeisgreat congratulations to you and your D16.
Oh, goodness - I get swamped by work in Scandinavia for a few days, and now that Iām home, weāve got dozens of threads here! Iāe done a quick skim of a few - so exciting to see decisions roll in from colleges, and decisions be made by our kiddos, too!
S had two schools reporting back while Iām out. He was accepted to both - one with a bit of merit (and $2K extra for NMF tacked on) - one likely with NO merit - they offer next to none. One of the schools is one he absolutely loved on the tour and visit, fell in love with the city and place. The other is closer, and where his girlfriend of nearly two years is studying. And while ordinarily, Iād say that should never be the deciding factor - well, itās been two years, including being apart on this one. Theyāre both being ridiculously mature about it, and sheās putting no pressure on him. She obviously has a preference - but I think theyāre both prepared to be apart longer, if it comes to that. (Odds of getting into her school were ridiculously low - they have a very low accept rate.)
Still one school outstanding, on 3/31. Itāll be while weāre visiting a school thatās likely now down to #3 on his list, but weāve got plans in the city already. As I sat on the 11+ hour flight home yesterday, I decided to opt for gratitude - those frequent flyer miles are going to come in handy over these next few weeks!
Hang in there, everyone - this part of the rollercoasterās nearly over. Then we get the next loops and spins, I guess. Whee?

@morningside95 thank you for your kind comments and information. My D16 liked Grinnell (have family in area), and we know a few people that go to Grinnellā¦but the other school (washu) she feels would better suit her. I will tell her of the facebook group, as she does follow several college facebook groups to see what the āvibeā is. Unfortunately, she did not visit. She does love Washu as it has her favorite PNP program and her other favorite is Baylor (loves their honors/medical program) and I am not sure which school will win out at this point.
@ReminiscingDad my D14 received a LL from Cornell two years ago and attended the special weekend she was invited toā¦absolutely eye-opening for her and definitely was the tipping point for her decision to attend there. She is now a happy sophomore, and cannot see herself anywhere else. I donāt know if it would have been her top choice if she had not attended the special April program.
I know there are only so many days of school that can be missed, and so many hours in a dayā¦but making it work to attend those programs can make a path clear at times!
@cakeisgreat - I remember that! What a terrific ending for you! Or should I say āopportunity for a new beginningā? Perseverance definitely paid off - and nobody should have a single credit of precalc as a determining factor of anything. Congratulations, and best of luck to you too on the next adventure!
