I agree that it is rude to wear other colleges logos while visiting. During this great indecision time DD is avoiding any college items. We have few college mugs from the schools she got in. She would not touch them. She stated it very clear- no favorites before all decisions are in.
The tiny sleeping bag weâre looking at is this one: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GKD1EXI?keywords=compressible%20sleeping%20bag&qid=1458510363&ref_=sr_1_1&sr=8-1
If you look at the pictures in the reviews, it compresses small enough to fit in your hand. Obviously not intended for heavy-duty use, but itâs cheap and will travel easily, and thatâs what we want. D has been given a buddy for her visit and sheâs going to ask if stopping at Target or such and picking up a pad or thick yoga mat would be helpful too. Even if we leave it there, would be cheaper than paying for checked baggage both ways.
I donât need to check Dâs luggage for appropriate wear-she has more fashion sense than I do!
My D wears her T-shirts sometimes to school, but not to other colleges. I think she wants to dress a little ânicerâ than a college t-shirt (just guessing). I wanted her to wear her Pitt shirt to school on Fridayâwe are in Wisconsin and the Badgers were playing Pitt that night. She refusedâdoesnât want any extra attention!
Yes, I admit that I too have brought back t-shirts from all my own work-related visits to various universities. These are a not-insignificant part of my kidsâ wardrobes. S14 finally told me to stop bringing them back t-shirts. I am pretty sure weâve never made this particular faux pas described above, though S16 did wear his MIT shirt to a math team competition the day after his friend was rejected. Said friend asked if he was mocking him, and S16 said âHey, I wasnât even qualified enough to apply.â But he did feel bad that he had been unthinking. So weâll be sure to check before heading to admitted students functions.
We may be done. I was talking to S today and it looks like his heart is really set on UCLA. With the Regents and everything UCLA is offering and the fact that he already has so many friends there and many more accepted yesterday he feels it is a good fit. He even told me that he hopes he gets rejected from the rest of his colleges. Itâs funny because when this started he said the last place he wanted to go was UCLA because everyone from our school goes there.
For those of you who got the Regents you can now sign up for the Overnight Stay Program (OSP).
@4kids2graduate thank you, Iâm glad your daughter found her passion and could do the switch of majors even though it was difficult. So, is it difficult to take classes in another college within Cornell? And are double majors not very popular? One thing we liked about UPenn was the freedom to take classes in different âschools/collegesâ within it. It is actually encouraged!
@bookmom7 yes, you can upload the pdf from TurboTax and it works fine. I did that and was acceptable to all schools.
Regarding T-shirts - a random story:
I once saw a middle-school kid at school in my district, wearing an MIT T-shirt. Foolish person that I was before starting the college thinking process for my own kids, I thought she might just have liked the shirt, because what middle-schooler plans for college, right?
So I said, âOh, are those your initials?â I got the withering look that only a tween can give an adult and, âItâs a COLLEGEâ. Good thing she let me know.
We once went on a field trip and took the students to the science museum in LA. It was closed so we took the kids to see USC which is right across the street. The students went into the book store and purchased USC apparel. We then went to UCLA with the students who were wearing their USC shirts. The UCLA students actually started cheering the students wearing the USC shirts.
A few schools do a good number of Feb admits. I know Rensselaer does this too and it was a strike against from my son who otherwise liked it. I guess some schools know they will lose a certain number of students to study abroad or other circumstances and use the Feb admits to keep their classes the size they want. If the school is a good fit and my child was outgoing and not intimidated it wouldnât bother me because after all the stress of senior year a few months off sounds kind of nice.
I feel like I should know this since there are so many California parents on this thread, and with so many discussions regarding the UCsâŠbut what is the Regents that everyone talks about when they get accepted to one of the UCs?
@ReminiscingDad It is not a problem to take classes across colleges at Cornell, but there is a problem with engineering having so many requirements there isnât a lot of extra time (this is not an issue just with Cornell but with all accredited engineering degrees). That is what they told us in 2014 and also our experience, way back in the day. H and I were both in engineering; what we now call GenEds were taken from other colleges. I transferred to a different major in another college. They emphasized again in 2014 that transfer was not only possible but almost likely (at least major to major) for many students.
Back in the day there may have been a limit on how many classes you could take in the privates if you were in one of the state-assisted colleges, but that may not be the case anymore http://admissions.cornell.edu/faq/whats-real-difference-between-privately-endowed-and-state-assisted-undergraduate-colleges
@4kids2graduate The Regentâs scholarship is the highest scholarship at each UC. It is awarded by the specific school and different schools do it differently. Typically it is given to the top 1% or so (someone correct me if I am wrong). Some schools like Berkeley and UCLA invite you to apply and then have interviews and choose winners. Others, like Irvine, make the offer automatic. Typically they give you a small stipend but you also get the advantage of early registration, parking permits, special housing, etc. UCI also includes their honors program and special dorms. Others have other perks. I only know UCI because that is the one my kid got.
I think UCLA and Berkeley also allow more aid than the stipend, such as help with all need and will replace loans with scholarships, but not all campuses do that.
Anyone else have more to add?
@LKnomad I think they also have special programs like career fairs for those who get Regentsâ.
Is the Regentâs scholarship the only one offered at UCLA?
@SoCalGirl98 Nope, they also offer Alumni scholarships
@frenchtoastlover , is that an invite only scholarship as well?
Thanks @LKnomad, nice there are those opportunities at your public universities, even though it seems to vary widely for each individual school. Washington State has no such program for their public universitiesâŠeach one is very different in what they offer or do not offer. My S11 applied to 13 schools, one of which was University of Washington. He was accepted to UW (a feat all by itself)âŠbut absolutely NO offer of anything. It was the one school out of ALL that he applied to and was accepted to that did not even offer work study for heaven sakes!!! So many of his other schools had automatic merit scholarships, or out of state recruiting scholarships, need based grants, etc. etcâŠUW offered zilch!
Both D14 and S16 did not even apply to any instate schoolsâŠby then they knew the out of state options had better FA opportunities including scholarships, etc. if you are a high stats kind of kid. Kind of sad if you ask meâŠas someone who has paid taxes in this state for 24 yearsâŠand who would like to see our state university system become stronger, etcâŠshouldnât they be doing things to keep their own top students in-state?
@sseamom I know your D has a very specific goal for colleges in her quest for HBCUs that probably precluded Washington state universitiesâŠbut do you know if your daughterâs classmates experiences or anyone else you know has had this frustration with the university system in Washington state?
Did not plan to vent at the beginning of this postâŠsorry. Rant over!
Thanks @ReminiscingDad - bit the bullet & just scanned the signed copy. I. AM. DONE. (or so I think) <:-P
Funny story when DS was at a summer honors camp- they were doing a âgroup shareâ about why they wanted to attend there-âXâ University. DS said one kid said âI donât, I really want to go to âYâ Universityâ (very much a rival). DS said the camp counselors were so stunned- everyone just sat in silence for about a minute. Silly kids!
@SoCalGirl98 I donât believe so. For UCLA and Berkeley at least, anyone can apply for Regentsâ (some are sent emails, however); UCLA sends out invites to certain applicants to apply for the Alumni Scholarship, but anyone can apply.
