Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@ReminiscingDad D started out in environmental engineering, but switched after first two semesters to environmental science/sustainability - she is more of the grassroots/chain-herself-to-a-redwood/activist type, and she quickly realized that she would be limited in that aspect if she stayed in engineering.

The one thing I will mention, at Cornell it is not easy to switch majors if the new major is in a different “college” (D switched from Engineering to CALS)…but it is possible. D had some frustration with the process, but was able to successfully switch. She still has many close engineering friends there however…so stays connected in that way!

Just arrived to Wofford’s accepted student weekend, and there’s a kid wearing a USC Gamecock’ s button down shirt. Where’s his momma ? Just shaking my head.

I know very little about FB, although I do have an account. I have lots of friends and relatives on FB daily. If I join our closed group, will any of my “friends” see anything or know that I am part of that closed group? Also, will those of you that are part of that closed group see my page and the other things regarding my FB account…or only what I post in the closed group? I am just such a very private person and wary of social media in general (CC is the exception to my view on social media!).

@carolinamom2boys Hear you … according to DH and DS, there was a kid at the Vanderbilt event wearing a Harvard sweater! Rude and disrespectful if you ask me [-X

@kittymom1102 @carolinamom2boys There was a girl wearing a sweatshirt for a state school at my accepted students weekend and another wearing a Boston University t-shirt who wouldn’t shut her mouth about how much she hated the college we were at. Strange…

This is not DS16’s top choice, but he has enough respect and common sense not wear his top choice’s T shirt here.

@readingclaygirl OMG I thought that was so odd and uncommon :-q

I don’t know if they think they look important or something. So desperate to get attention.

One wise ones that are so far ahead of me on the financial aid road it is not even funny- help!

(I remember this coming up) If I use the PDF from TurboTax e-filed would that work for CSS- even though it is not ‘signed.’?

(I may have just caused some nightmarish flashbacks for some… sorry :frowning: )

@kittymom1102 It was really odd considering it’s a small place so everyone saw everyone. I really don’t get people who come to an event just to whine about it. Unless their parents made them

@readingclaygirl Even if the parents made them, they should have manners.

Exactly @kittymom1102 In November I went on a prospective students overnight and the other prospective student “prospie” with my host was in an incredibly sour mood the whole time.

@4kids2graduate
There are different privacy levels for groups. When I searched for College Confidential on Facebook a while back I noticed a public group. However, someone might have created a secret group. If it is a secret group then it will not show up on search. Someone has to tell you about it and add you. If it is a closed group then it should show up on search but you ask for permission to join. Your Facebook friends can’t see your posts in a private or secret group. The members of the group can’t see your personal posts unless you have a post (or your page) set to public. I don’t want to post on the College Confidential group that I can see because it is open. However, if someone has created a closed group then I would love to join that group.

@readingclaygirl What’s wrong with those kids. I can only imagine all the stories hosts could tell!

If anyone if interest in the FB group feel free to PM me. I am an admin. It is closed so nobody who knows you outside will see you are a member of the group. The people in the group can only see what your normal privacy settings will allow on your private page.

If you are newer or not very active we will ask you for a bit more info before inviting you in. This is to keep the group a safe place for all.

“Secret groups” are completely hidden. They don’t show up in search, and your activity doesn’t show up in your friends’ feeds. Posts will show up in your newsfeed if you elect to have them do so, but that’s about it.

I’ve been part of a “secret” facebook group (disability advocacy related) for about five years, and the only reason my husband even knows about it is because we’re good friends with another set of parents from the group and I had to explain how the wife and I met.

@GoodGrief16 Oh okay. I do not see a closed College Confidential group on Facebook when I search. If I could join a closed group that would be great.

@readingclaygirl: “There was a girl wearing a sweatshirt for a state school at my accepted students weekend and another wearing a Boston University t-shirt who wouldn’t shut her mouth about how much she hated the college we were at. Strange…”

I know you all dress yourselves and can walk across the street without holding our hands, @readingclaygirl, I really do, but it is only on the overnights extended by school groups that have me checking the small bag my kids pack. And I explicitly state that to wear another school’s shirt would be rude, and scan their faces for … trickery or flickers of scoff or scorn.

There is nothing which would excuse them representing our household in such a manner.

@Waiting2exhale My parents wouldn’t let me act in such a manner either. No way.

“I am ok as long as we are not a coven. My alter southern white matron persona may be offended being called a witch.”

I’ve been called ‘witch’ for years, @texaspg. Don’t mind at all, as long as it is not used as euphemism.

My S’ laptop case is from SCU, which made sense when we bought it, as we were there often, I’m an alum of one of the grad schools, we have a lot of friends on faculty and staff, and - well, my family had a weird tradition. I grew up wearing college and university t-shirts and sweatshirts, sort of as a subliminal reminder to stay focused. Other than school uniforms and tshirts from various HS things, S has college and university stuff (including from schools overseas where I’ve traveled for work), science museum and bookstore t-shirts, and soccer team jerseys. That, with jeans or khakis - comprises his entire wardrobe.

Now that school selection time is coming, we’re making sure he’s got some neutral clothes to wear on visitsg. I hadn’t thought about the laptop cover until he mentioned it a couple of weeks ago. Even his water bottle is branded - University of Ottawa, where I visited last August for work.

Just adding that to the list! We’ve been good about it for college visits and interviews, but for the admitted student trips, it’s important, too. Maybe I’ll see if he catches that himself before I check to see what he’s packed.
