Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Congrats @LKnomad and @indsfolax , @frenchtoastlover, @Mysonsdad ! Decisions, Decisions, Decisions! Money is always good @bookmom7!

My S was waitlisted at Lehigh today. Too bad as that might have been his top choice. I thought he had a good shot with his stats. He interviewed and visited (made the 6 hour drive twice) but I knew his ECs were only so so. Ditto for his supplemental essays (although he made an effort - it was a struggle for him). So he will likely be deciding between the University of Rochester and Lafayette College both with some merit. I think either would be a nice choice for him. He has pretty much taken CWRU and Ohio State honors off the table.

Thanks ti everyone for your congrats. My son, who really doesn’t show much emotion, said that that he was pretty excited. Being the kid that he is, he immediately started a spreadsheet of costs.

He apparently somewhat of an anomaly at his school for both CAL and UCLA. He apparently broke the one school acceptance curse.

And yes, @AsleepAtTheWheel he has all 10 digits intact!

@momofzag Sorry to hear about Lehigh, they are a little quirky in their admissions process at times, perhaps unpredictable being the better word. I am a U of Rochester alum and would have loved if my D was interested in Lafayette, great school, gorgeous campus. Those are two schools he is choosing between that he simply can’t go wrong. Good luck to him on making that final choice!

Thanks @skates79. I like both options and have a particular soft spot for Lafayette as it reminded me a bit in feel to my LAC alma mater. Not sure if there are enough engineering resources there though compared to a research u.

My DD has received the following list of acceptances so far: University of Oklahoma (Rolling/NMF Honors), UC Merced, UC Davis, UC San Diego, UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine, UC Berkeley. We are so proud of her!

Congrats @Mysonsdad for UCB and USC

@crowlady I’ll only be visiting Yale before I make decisions (and maybe Sarah Lawrence). I don’t have the time unfortunately to go to other admitted students days. However, I won’t be making decisions without having seen many of the campuses. Did Explore Bowdoin this past fall. Did formal visits at Stanford, all Ivies, Amherst, Wesleyan, Vassar, and USC (as well as the Trustees’ overnight). Will definitely keep everyone updated.

D has another acceptance, another wait list, and another rejection. Still has 4 schools outstanding. Only one is a contender in her mind, given the places she’s already in. Right now her final choices are down to 4 schools (one more possible if she gets in) and the decision about wait lists, which could drag this indecision thing into summer.

She went to one of the schools’ admitted students days (liked it, willing to go there, not ā€œin loveā€ whatever that means) and is planning another 3 visits in April. I still need to get her a flight to one.

I’m currently on a college trip with my youngest, who is not that academic and wants to have ā€œfunā€ in college. We saw Pitt yesterday and she really liked it. I hope this whole thing will be easier with her.

@EastGrad, thanks for the welcome. This forum has been immensely informative and everyone has been extremely kind and helpful.

So many people here to congratulate! Seems like most have heard wonderful news. I’m sorry to those whose children did not get the news they were hoping for. I’m positive great things will still come out of those disappointments. Though I’m not religious, I love music and great lyrics. One of my favorites lines is from Garth Brooks, ā€œsome of God’s greatest gifts are unanswered prayers.ā€

My best to everyone.

Have a great weekend

My D is feeling very discouraged right now. She has a couple good options but neither is near the top of her list and neither has offered her enough merit aid to make them affordable. She was waitlisted at Vanderbilt, and feels like if she was waitlisted there, how can she possibly expect to hear good news from an Ivy? I’m feeding her chocolate and bracing for April 1.
@cardinal2020mom I love the Garth Brooks quote and I’m going to pass that on to her.

Thank you to everyone for the congratulatory posts and congratulations to everyone whose kid got into schools today. For those who didn’t get the news they wanted to hear, God knows we have all been there so we feel your pain. As I have said many times on this board, I hate this process. The stress on our kids is really too much to ask and I think the colleges, the Common App, College Board, student loan companies and USN&WR are playing one big game with our kids emotions. Today we are lucky because we got to be on the winning side, but that doesn’t mean we don’t know what the not-so-winning side feels like. I have read many posts on CC of kids who didn’t get into their top schools and still had a blast at college. That being said, our kids will get through this and be just fine.

@aacvj103 S also got wait listed from Vandy and we are waiting on 5 Ivy’s next week There is a student at my school (I’m a teacher) who got rejected from UCI, UCSD, UCLA and wait listed from UCB, my point being, college admissions is unpredictable. So let’s not give up hope yet.

Where are you guys seeing the national merit results? I can’t find them…?

I applied to one college–early action–and that was it. I think my sister did the same thing. My parents had it easy. Sometimes I can’t believe that they allowed me to only apply to one college, but I guess they figured if I didn’t get in, I could apply to other colleges. I never regretted my decision to apply to one college because I loved my college experience. I don’t know how kids these days survive the college madness, but I know they will. Hang in there everyone.

My sister and I also only applied to one college each early action. @Justathought1

Is there a list of National Merit Scholars? In news here, D has been WL at 2, accepted at 4, still waiting on 1. Depending on the last one, she may be down to deciding between two equally great but very different options out of the four.

Welcome, @aacvj103 and sorry to hear about your D’s discouragement. I hope it turns out okay.

Congrats on your D’s list @RayznHELL and welcome!

Sorry about Lehigh, @momofzag. I am glad to see his other choices. Did you say he had two possible tracks? I hope he has lots of good choices for both.

re National Merit Scholar scholarship- DS logged on to his NM portal. The notification was there. None of the colleges he applied to offer a NM scholarship so that is a factor.
I was so excited I didn’t read it all- not suppose to openly the info until late April/May ^#(^ (thank you CC for giving me an outlet to say yippee!)

@momofzag Sorry about the Lehigh waitlist. Lehigh is particularly competitive for engineering. I think it helped my S that he is a strong math student who did not apply for engineering. Not sure how active the Lehigh waitlist is but it certainly can’t hurt to stay on it and show some additional interest. I know someone whose son is having a great experience as an engineering major at Lafayette and was able to get involved with research as a freshman. And my S is actually at an admitted student day at Rochester. today. It is also a wonderful school and seems academically comparable to Lehigh. Seems like your S has very solid choices although I understand it is hard when you have to redirect from the one you wanted most. I’m hoping it all falls into place for your S.

Thanks @eastgrad and @PAO2008 I am sure all will work out. S will be revisiting Lafayette and Rochester back to back on 17th and 18th so will be able to compare directly. I am not even sure that he knows yet about the waitlist as he is in Europe on a school trip and he forgot his phone charger at home. Good news is that I will be over it by the time he gets back
