Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

Congrats @LKnomad!

@crowlady - Good to know we don’t have the only crazy physics teacher with no regard for spring break. :frowning:

@frenchtoastlover I know you had a minor blip the other day but you are still on a roll! Congrats again.

DS got into USC. Now we will be deciding between USC/UCLA/UCB. With USC as NMF, cost wise all 3 will be approx same. Let’s see where DS decides to go…

Thank you @livinginLA!

Congrats @indsfolax

3 great choices congrats @indsfolax !

Congrats @indsfolax and good luck with the decision

Congrats @LKnomad and @indsfolax , @frenchtoastlover too!

@Waiting2exhale, this young lady slays ME. She pretty much never had a childhood. She’s been raising her brothers since she was a teen herself. In just the last 2 years she’s lost her mom and grandmother, but she took in her brothers at 19. She’s had blow after blow after blow and STILL gets up every day and goes to school and an internship and takes care of all these kids while volunteering for organizations that have helped her and the kids. She blows me away.

What a wonderful and inspiring young lady @sseamom Sometimes we don’t remember just how lucky we are to have families to support us. I have this friend who unfortunately might not even be going to community college because her parents won’t file the FAFSA. She has been through so much(multiple mental illnesses and hospital stays) and her parents are incredibly overbearing. They don’t want her to leave, not even to work. It’s so difficult to hear especially since she worked incredibly hard to even be able to graduate this year. I really hope it all works out for her

Congratulations @LKnomad!!!

That’s heartbreaking, @readingclaygirl. I hope she finds a way to happiness.

And yes, quite an inspiring story @sseamom. I’m sure she would say she’s just doing what she’s got to do. And then there are some who might feel or be unable to pull off such superhuman feats, but they too need empathy and support. Life can be so hard sometimes! Counting the blessings, here.

How wonderful that it doesn’t come down to money, @indsfolax . @frenchtoastlover Can’t wait to watch your decision-making process. How many schools will you be able to visit?

@madredos Our phsyics is WebAssign, if that means anything. I suppose I’m glad it isn’t due tonight and also that we aren’t traveling until next week.

S got into Cal and USC (So Cal) today

@indsfolax, our choices are, UCB, USC, and UCLA Regents. S wants to go into business and could graduate from UCLA with little or no debt, but their economics program is not as good as UCB, but UCB didn’t give us Regents, but also has Haas School of Business. What if he goes to Cal and changes his major to something where both schools are equal and we don’t get the Regents money? Tough decisions coming up.

Congrats @Mysonsdad <:-P

Congrats @LKnomad, @crowlady, @Mysonsdad

@crowlady A friend of my S’s got into UMBC will a nice scholarship - the mom tells me he felt this school is the perfect fit for him and the scholarship is making it affordable. They are OOS. He’s had some health issues so I’m especially glad this school is working out for him. How great that this is an option for your S.

Boo for the Physics teacher and other teachers with too much work. My S is on spring break and yes, he has homework. Really? I am sure his teachers are not working over spring break. The kids deserve a break too. I keep telling S - one more month and you’ll be on your senior class trip then the end will be in sight for this year of way too much work.

And, since we did not have enough good news today, LOL, my S found out tonight he got accepted to Lehigh. That makes him 9 for 9, waiting on one more that is pretty much off the table. I never expected this for him, was just always hoping he’d have several good choices. Now he has many and based on what I posted earlier today about W&M and Brandeis, will require a re-evaluation of visits for the first half of April. It is hard to believe all the good news he has gotten in the past week. He’s had a really tough year with school - one class in particular that I posted about back in February - so the winter has been hard but he’s been hanging in there. Eventually, I may share the whole story. But I’m so glad that everyone’s DC on here seem to have good choices, no matter what news they get in the next week.

Congrats @Mysonsdad

Congrats to @LKnomad @frenchtoastlover @crowlady @Mysonsdad!

@readingclaygirl As someone who a family member with severe mental illness ,I can tell you that while your friend’s parents may look overbearing, they may be doing exactly what your friend needs at this point in order for your friend to survive. Mental illness is a cruel and complex disease, and can be mild to very severe. The fact that your friend has had multiple hospital admissions at her young age can be very telling regarding the severity of her illness . It is very hard to have someone admitted to a hospital for a mental illness in this day and time. They gave to be determined to be imminently dangerous to themselves or others . Your friend may have a problem with being compliant with tx, not taking necessary medications or taking care of herself without close supervision . She may not respond well under stress and the additional stress of college may be too much for her to handle right now. It may have been recommended by her psychiatrist that she not work or attend school right now. All I am asking anyone is do not judge a family who is trying to survive mental illness. There are many factors behind the scene at play which go into their decision and they may be doing the best that they can at the time. If this girl had a serious heart condition or other life threatening illness , people most likely would be less likely to judge.

My niece had her first ā€œpsychoticā€ episode and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at 19. She is a twin, and my sister wanted to be " fair" and give her the " same educational opportunities" that her sister had including attending an OOS school. As a result , my niece almost died several times and her sister’s college experience was marred by being a caregiver to her very sick sister, all because no one wanted to admit the severity of the problem. I’ve worked in the mental health system in the past with children , adolescents and adults ,and it is truly complex. While it is commendable that your friend was able to complete HS , she may not be ready to start college just yet.

If anyone was in the running for a National Merit Scholarship- they are posted on the website!

DS awarded the 1 time $2500 as a National Merit Scholar. woohoo!

Also congrats to @Mysonsdad - lots to think about!

Welcome, @esteemom & congrats on your S’s great choices; welcome to @PhilaSkiMom; @Momeila, and @cardinal2020mom.

Love your birth metaphor, @undercovermom1 and by the way the metaphor was extended @4kids2graduate, @RyanG1207, @madredos, and @petrichor11.

Good luck with future roommate @readingclaygirl. Can you spend any time with her in person before making a final decision?

Good perspective, @carolinamom2boys.

@crowlady and @madredos, boo to the assignments due during spring break. Like @PAO2008’s S, D16 is also working on several (!) spring break assignments, most of hers are IB related.

Thanks for sharing the inspirational story about the woman you mentor, @sseamom. It’s a nice perspective on how much hard work, perseverance, and a good attitude really matter.

Sorry for the bad news, @NUwildcat92. We didn’t have much bad news today, so I wonder if folks haven’t posted yet. Hugs to anyone feeing bad tonight. Have some ice cream and reach out to the group when you feel like it.

And now, a deep breath:
