@LKnomad, so our kids may still be going to school together?
@aacvj103 I am thinking of calling NEU and telling them I want my $100 I spent on their application fee, IDOC and transcripts back. Their net piece calculator told us the total would be $10,000/year and it ended up being $23,000 after a $15,000 scholarship. They will tell me to go pound sand, but I think I will do it anyway.
@Mysonsdad - thereās a lot of really gorgeous parts of Cal, paths through forested areas, a creek - they just arenāt on the main tour. (Iām there 1-2x/week, usually taking BART from SF and walking across to the EECS/Soda Hall area of campus.) And then thereās everything else in the Bay Area, too. The one HUGE downside - everythingās ridiculously expensive, and Iām not sure how long housing is guaranteed by Cal these days.
@Almondjoy1 My son is not doing an overnight at Rochester. I didnāt see it as an option and he is not clamoring for one so I didnāt worry about it. We will be driving 4.5 hours the night before the visit so he likely wouldnāt have had time anyway.
Yes, it getting to be winnowing and decision time. We started with eight schools. Two safeties fell away when similar schools that D liked better accepted her and gave her equal or better packages Two more fell away when the generous merit packages didnāt come close to closing the gap on their pricy COAās. And then there were four.
And now there appear to be three, with our last in-state option now being pared from the list according to D. It would have been great for her original major due to a direct admit program, but since she has zero interest in that major and profession now, we are down to three. Accepted student trip next weekend, then another visit to her current top choice the following weekend, and after that it is decision time!!
Congrats to all with good news, with decisions made, and plenty of ice cream and cake for the times when the news is not quite as good. (-:
@LKnomad@mysonsdad ā Well, we live spitting distance from Cal. So if your kids end up there they can always BART out to our house (just a bit farther east, past the hills) for a home-cooked meal. Weāre also available to bail them out, both figuratively and literally.
I agree that the overall general area around Cal is seriously awesome. While I can see why some might not think the campus is nice, there are so many opportunities for all kinds of recreation nearby. I had thought one of the best things about Santa Clara - for my S - was the chance to live in such a nice area that would normally be so so expensive. I know the housing is an issue at Cal, but people work it out. I suppose itās obvious which way I lean and I wonāt pretend the fact that I spent the first two years at USC doesnāt have something to do with it.
Thank you @kittymom1102! Luck ran out for me at Wellesley haha, but all is well. I know that I have amazing choices, and I canāt find a single bit of a reason to complain. CONGRATULATIONS to your S though; very happy for him!!!
