Parents of the HS Class of 2016 (Part 1)

@inn0v8r, we don’t have a decision yet. But we are down from 19 to…5? 8? Haha, something like that.

The first cut of schools was based on finances. About three were cut entirely sight unseen because they just weren’t going to work; maybe D16 didn’t get a necessary competitive scholarship, whatever. Several more were cut without attending an admitted students day, though some other sort of visit occurred.

One financially viable school has been cut because the program was just not as good as another comparable school. So that was easy enough.

So we have the remaining contenders. One will be cut Wednesday if she does not receive the scholarship for which she just interviewed. Two are in-state and will only come into play if there is some kind of weird event that requires she stay home or close to it. One is a OOS financial safety and will only come into play if her remaining visits are a disaster.

As for the other four, we will see how the visits go, discuss impressions, pros, cons, finances, opportunities to pursue her sports. Hopefully an answer emerges.

@Skates76 your D’s program sounds terrific. It’s a credit to the university that they figured out it could be its own program and offered it up to potential students looking for that track.

Your description of the RIT population describes my S almost to a ‘T’.

And, yes, the one time I went to Nick’s it was definitely after midnight…

@RyanG1207, my S (like me) wears aids, and qualified for NTID services. He’s always been mainstream so at first it was a little off putting to him, but he knows now he can take advantage of as much or as little has he thinks he needs. It’s a great program any way you look at it.

@crowlady, great to hear about your S’s experience. One of the things that drew us to RIT was the co-op program as its required for engineering.

All around we’re excited and happy for him. He’s actively meeting folks on social media and hoping to find a roommate.

@AnxietyAttack77 let me know if you want to borrow a quarter…

@dbjs70 I have hearing loss too. I wish your son the best in advocating for himself at RIT and in all his future endeavors. Let me know through PM if he ever has an interest in talking about hearing loss w/ me. I’d be more than happy too.

@inn0v8r I intend to post about my S’s decision process when I feel I can do it justice. I can say now that it involves a spreadsheet, a few visits, nagging, networking, and some hearsay.

My D committed to Pitt recently. It was a weird week waiting for her to decide–seemed like the only option left, and yet she hesitated. I think she is happy to be done with the process! My S18 took the ACT this weekend, so soon the focus will turn to him. Glad to get a year off though.

I am intrigued by how popular Pitt was/is on this board. Finances definitely played a huge role for us–D got full tuition which was a beautiful and slightly unexpected prize for her. I will write more on her options later as I do find reading other people’s stories educational.

@piesquared, regarding fun inclusions in the acceptance packages: D16 loved the little Triton figure included in the UCSD package and immediately pulled out the glue gun and built it.

@petrichor11, is that a new avatar? I like it!

Love catching up with all of you! Not doing a summary though…

@Booajo, I hope your D will get excited about attending Pitt.

My D texted me tonight, how good her Panera Bread take-out dinner was and how nice that there is one within walking distance, unlike back home in our rural small town.

She is loving the city.

@mommdc I think she is actually excited, but has a hard time showing emotion. This is a longstanding issue for her. She doesn’t let herself love stuff.

@Booajo Congrats on the Pitt commitment!! At the start of the process that was my D’s first choice and would be her school if she stayed with Pharmacy as a major. One of her cousins is teaching quite a bit st Pitt now in the bio department after getting her doctorate there and loves it. It was the hardest school for D to leave go of, and it will be atop her list for med/grad school.

@dbjs70 You can’t go anywhere in Rochester and not run into kids signing to each other, both hearing impaired and those learning to work as speech and hearing therapists. Fabulous program for those needs, quite possibly the very best!

@Booajo, I have one of those. Congrats anyways!

@mommdc similar to your D’s happiness about Panera, my D checked the distance to the nearest Trader Joes for every college she looked at.

@sbjdorlo - Ok, that makes total sense. St. Johns is great and a very specific fit for those who attend. It will probably be just the thing!

Re: missing the rain- it was better this year because of el nino. He actually contacted us, very excited a few times, because he got to be a “drowned rat.” He was a bit bummed by the drought, especially when they shut down the fountains. He has very happy memories of bands in the fountains from admitted students days.

It is looking like our youngest may pick a school very far away as well. Too far for his dad to road trip him there and he is sad.

@texaspg - That link is exactly what I was talking about, thanks. Pton doesn’t do as well in the cross admit department and I guess we just haven’t heard people speak passionately about why they choose Harvard. It does always seem to be Yale or MIT. Someone I am very close to (who attended Harvard) once told me the reason Harvard wins the yield battle is because for every Asian kid that is admitted, there is a set of Asian parents who will make them attend-no discussion necessary, or even allowed! (He is Chinese so I hope that makes it ok? Haha.)

@AnxietyAttack77 - You made me anxious reading about the no-decision after re-visits. S has one last re-visit coming up and we are hoping for an easy decision. Beginning to wonder if that’s a myth.

@PAO2008 and @GoodGrief16 - It looks like there are many of us still in the same boat. No pun intended.

@dbjs70 - You may need a whole roll of quarters!

One school now out of the running, and two left. My D is is pretty happy with the school she’s about to come home from. Exact words were “mom, it’s so cool, you have no idea.” And in other good news, she just learned she is a finalist for a Stem scholarship from local (but international) company. Getting this scholarship would wipe out her work study for the year at college. Keeping fingers crossed.

Good luck with the scholarship @carlson2 !

@Booajo Congrats on selecting Pitt. Yes it’s interesting how many are selecting it here.

D wore her Pitt t-shirt to school yesterday and discovered that two other kids she knows are also going. This is really weird. According to naviance no one from D’s high school has gone to Pitt in 6 years. Many have applied and been accepted but no one has chosen to attend. Now there are at least three from her high school going this year and she heard rumors of one more. It’s strange for a school that is a 10 hour drive from home.

Good luck on the scholarship @carlson2 . It’s also very comforting when your child is excited regarding her decision.

@carlson2, I hope it works out for her!

Congratulations to everyone that has made a decision!!

@carlson2 Good luck to your daughter!
