Parents of the HS Class of 2017 - 3.0 to 3.4 GPA

@curiositycat333 I think what’s obvious to the adults and to the students can vary! My S wasn’t sure what to make of his UVM portal tonight. Of course if he’s just read the 2nd email it would have been a no brainer. On the flip side, his bumbling around found his merit award.

U of O is pricey, we found the same thing scholarship wise so cut it early. It would have been cut regardless as it’s just bigger than my S wants. But it’s a really great option and I know a top choice for your Hopefully UCSB or Cal Poly comes through. Is he still considering OSU? That would at least be less than U of O.

@MomStudent2017, congratulations on the ED! You’re done!

@93pilots, yay! Beloit was on our list for awhile–but D felt we had too many midwest schools–I was sorry to see that one go, though.

@curiositycat333, congrats on UofO–guess your S was more engaged than you thought if he was checking daily! Isn’t it great when it finally registers with them that college is actually happening?

@eandesmom–I’m not a kid, and I found the UVM portal to be a little weird to navigate (not sure what that says about me–maybe I’m more like a kid than an adult?)–and it’s a little startling when new buttons just pop up out of nowhere–I’d rather have all the buttons there and and then when you click it it tells you no information available yet or something. At any rate, I sound crankier than I am–very grateful for the merit, and portal navigation by no means colors my impression of the school, lol.

@twoinanddone Thanks. I ran it again just to see and it came out at 23K. I dropped them an email to double-check. However, after I sent it I went to their website and honestly with her stats she is a bit below the 23K scholarship stats and so probably only deserves the 16K…just not sure why the NPC would say the 23K when I just put her accurate stats in. Annoying.

ETA: St Mike’s offers a 1K “visit scholarship” on top of regular awards if you visit the school, so that’s why the numbers aren’t matching my original message…she got the 16K scholarship plus the visit scholarship.

Anyone here apply to Salisbury U in MD? It is odd because his portal has a place to accept or decline admission which showed up about a week ago. However, he has received nothing in the mail, and there is no “You got in” message - but we know that link was not there before. And no email. Interesting. Just wondered if anyone else had heard anything.

Don’t ignore the little bonuses like the ‘visit’ grant. My daughter has 2 of those ( a ‘visit’ and a ‘know an alum’ one that is totally bogus and I don’t think they even award anymore). It’s $2k per year, so $8k over 4 years. I think she has 9 items of aid on her bill. I don’t care what they call it, as long as the balance keeps going down.

Just ask nicely. “I don’t understand why the NPC says $23k and yet the award letter says $16k…?” If I had never run the NPC, I wouldn’t have found the error in the ACT score reported to the admissions office.

Congratulations to all of the acceptances!! And the ED–great news!

WWU update: For those keeping track of such things, WWU had more or less come off the list due to EE not being ABET accredited. I emailed the engineering secretary and she said they are at the end of their three-year process and should be accredited in August. I feel pretty secure. The EE department was previously an ABET electronics engineering program and they have other ABET programs. I think we just got stuck in the middle of the change-over (three years – sheesh!). We’re leaving it on the list for now because she really loved it and might be willing to take a small risk.

D got the $15,000 Presidential for UVM. It will probably come off the list. It’s tough to justify a $40,000 COA when CSU is coming in at $23,000 and WWU at $24,000. It’s nice to see UVM is tossing merit around on this thread, but they’re so expensive as an OOS public. Acceptances are always nice though!

@rscgrad, sounds like good news all around on Kent State – congrats!

@eandesmom, while I’m sure the intentions are good (get students more involved), that’s a lot of stress this early for students to decide how to reply to a professor.

@CoyoteMom, grats on UVM. I agree with @eandesmom that UVM and WWU are like our Bama.

@tacocat333 and @CoyoteMom , congrats on GMU honors – I hope the $$ news will be good for both of you!

@kt1969, grats on St. Michael’s. I agree that you may be able to get that bumped up. My oldest D got increased merit from her top choice after contacting them.

@93pilots, congrats on Beloit. Oldest D looked at Beloit and it seems like a really cool place.

@MomStudent2017, congrats on Christopher Newport. I’m guessing ED means he’s done! A celebration and great relief.

@curiositycat333, congrats on U of OR and glad your S is excited!

(Sorry if I left anyone out – I’m behind!)

D17 got in to McDaniel, with 22K merit [the most of anywhere so far]. So that’s 5/5, but 3 of them were her safeties. Gets a little more challenging from here on out. She has 4 more EA apps out there, 3 matches and a reach, so we’ll see how that goes. 2 for 12/31, 1 for 1/15, and 1 for 2/1. Then just 3 RD apps.

Haven’t heard anything back from St Mike’s, but that isn’t surprising.

Congrats to all the other admits! Feels like we’re on a roll here in our little corner of CC.

@kt1969, once again, we are in the same boat–5 for 5 with 3 of them safeties, lol. Congrats on the McDaniel acceptance and $$! <:-P

Wow … congrats on all the new acceptances!

S17 received another acceptance today via portal … Appalachian State U. He will hear from the final 2 in January. Just received today the official letter from a U he was accepted into a week ago (via portal).

Thanks for all the comments re: ED acceptance into CNU. It was S17’s 1st choice since visiting in Summer 2015. He loves that it’s smaller @ 5K students & “only” a 3 hour drive form home (w/o traffic). He’s okay w/the 3 year on-campus requirement (each year you progress to “better” living arrangements w/senior year being apartment-style). The location is great … near historical areas, ocean, theme parks (for when he’s not studying).

Even tho he’s done … I plan to keep reading & wish everyone the best!

S was accepted to Albany today, with a Presidential Scholarship of $4,300 per year (which will pay ~2/3 of instate tuition). Now he has a decision to make with Albany being cheaper and having the potential for the 3+3 law program, but MSU having James Madison and the big school experience…

@momofa12 I haven’t heard anyone mention it. I know a boy who recently graduated (business) who is doing quite well career wise and would have been part of this thread, but that doesn’t answer your question lol.

@snoozn that is FABULOUS news about WWU. Glad to hear it’s still in play. I hear you on UVM. It is still in play despite the cost as the reality is, we are having a hard time finding anything but WWU that comes in under 40 and we knew that going into it. He doesn’t have the stats for big money so we end up with merit awards that “magically” bring costs “down” amazingly close to our EFC. Sigh. That said, for that exact reason, Ursinus looks like it is likely off the list. It wasn’t high on it to start and is falling for multiple reasons. UVM would require a serious work commitment and scholarship effort from S but he’s pretty motivated on this one which makes me want to support him in keeping it in play. Really nice to see him super engaged on an acceptance. He is aware it is about money but he definitely has skin in the game and truthfully if the offer had been less it would have to come off so I am super super relieved it came in where it did. Getting into Vermont definitely opened up S a little bit into admitting he does have a top 3. I’d guessed on two but the 3rd surprised me. Of course, WWU isn’t one of them but it’s not last either. I do have some hope one of his tops will be a bit more generous but time will tell.

@kt1969 congrats on McDaniel! Similar boat here, 3 matches out there, and one safety still.

@MSU88CHEng congrats on Albany!!! That’s a great deal!

@klinska lol. I do a lot of web design work and magically appearing buttons are kind of fun but, surprising. It is not a great portal, though I’ve definitely seen worse!

Congrats @kt1969 and @MSU88CHEng and @tacocat and @CoyoteMom and anyone I missed. So happy for all our kids!

Reporting in with one more piece of good news here…an acceptance at Chapman. Excited that there will be choices.

@93pilots Congrats on Chapman. I’ve heard great things about that school!

Wow, D17 just called me after getting out of work saying she had emails from Lewis & Clark and University of Redlands saying the portals were updated. She got in to both! She is going to have too many choices. Lewis & Clark was a bit of a reach, and Redlands was a match, so those feel particularly good I think. I don’t see any mention of merit from L&C, which is a bummer. However, she got 26K/year from Redlands, which is now the highest amount offered. A west coast trip may be in order. Can’t say as I am thrilled about the idea of her going so far away, though. But if she fell in love I guess I’d have to suck it up.

@93pilots Congrats on Chapman!

All of our acceptances here are making me so happy - Congratulations to all! You are giving me joy.

Special applause for @MomStudent2017 on Christopher Newport. I remember you saying on like post #2 on this thread that was your kid’s top choice… Just happiness!

@momofa12 I have no familiarity with Salisbury U. I wish I could help.

@93pilots and @kt1969 Congrats on the acceptances! May I ask, were the U of Redlands and Chapman EA applications?

Does anyone have any info. on asking UVM for more $? My S received the Presidential Scholarship of $15,000. What does it take to get$18,000?

@CAtransplant Yes, the U of Redlands was EA. Supposed to notify 1/15, so nice surprise to hear so early.

@kt1969 oh that is nice. My D applied also but RD.
