Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@eandesmom - I do believe social media overload for news is more geared towards one kind of view. Regardless, I always discuss current issues with DS and we discuss both points of view so that he is well informed. I also instructed him not to comment on social media.

Quick poll — Hey there all – for those of you whose school year goes into June - what do seniors typically do after AP exams - classes continue, internships, special projects? Even though not all classes are APs, our seniors may (not required) do internships instead of classes after the AP exam period ends - 25hrs a week is required for an internship - many find their own but he school lines up around 40-50 spots with various businesses. Students document their hrs and a manager has to sign a verification form, and students do a brief presentation at the end as well. They then get 2 weeks off before graduation - bc it is a regular exam period. They come back for graduation the third week of June.

To add on to the stat @vandyeyes mentioned in #26688, the Fields Medal was (finally!) awarded to a woman this past cycle. The old barriers are starting to break down…

@CT1543 We have about 4 weeks after APs. I think IB tests are after APs.

Your schools’ internship idea sounds cool. S’s engineering program makes paid summer internships available to students to apply for in summer, but not during the year. They will be attending the Bay Area Maker Faire the week after AP tests. They may be setting up their projects as museum exhibits after that.

Usually our AP classes do special projects, though I don’t know specifically about seniors yet. DS says seniors don’t take finals if they are happy with their grade or have an A or something like that. (Our AP classes do normally take finals.) According to the calendar, seniors have special activities all the last week, so only 3 regular weeks after AP tests, and the engineering group will be gone for one of those weeks.

There are some exceptions, like Calc BC. California UC/CSU standards require a couple extra chapters in the calc book for Calc 2 beyond what is covered by Calc BC. So, if you want to get credit for 2nd semester college calc, you need to do those topics (which I think are “introduction to differential equations and vectors”). I’ve heard that Calc BC seniors need to take the final, because it’s technically a dual enrollment class, and most of the grade is the 2-3 tests and the final.

I’m not sure what will happen in AP Macroecon for S this semester. It’s only a semester class and also technically a dual-enrollment class. They do a stock market investing simulation at some point.

APUSH last year had a project learning about conspiracy theories and how to spot them.

AP Physics has them build something cool. S built a small rail gun back when he took it. I don’t recall about AP Chem or AP Bio.

@snoozn @MotherOfDragons @curiositycat333 Yup, I am used to being the only woman in classrooms, research teams, work meetings. And at home (!) with two boys :(( I often joke that if I do not see a mirror I do not realize that I am a woman.
I love when I go to conferences there are long lines in men’s bathrooms (because 97% of attendees are men) and I am the only one using women’s. :))
I did not mind at all being called Mr. X by a professor some thirty years ago as it seemed somehow fair to me. Same treatment ?!! @-) I did not want to be treated differently.

D17’s school has been trying a new system with respect to finals, AP exams and the post-AP period. Last year and this, they have started having final exams before the AP exams, which falls a couple of weeks after a two week spring break. Graduation is not until the first week in June. What happens after APs depends on the teacher – some do projects, some have activities, etc. Last year, D’s math teacher, for example, did a unit budgeting on personal finance.

Did you guys read the Breibart article yesterday about how the number of girls in STEM majors should be capped because they are temperamentally unsuitable for STEM fields and can’t handle competitive environments? Yeah…

Well, first negative admissions decision, I’m sure there are more to come… waitlisted at UIUC. Wasn’t high on the list, so she’s fine, but lets hope for acceptances from her top schools!

@socalmom007 Phooey on UIUC. And a bigger phooey on Breibart.

Graduation here isn’t until June 20 or so. Lots of projects after APs

There are lot of extreme articles on every topic, better to ignore them and give publicity. If they don’t get enough page hits they will stop writing garbage.

At my sons school the Seniors stop going to class at the end of April except AP’s they go until the AP test and then they are done, no finals. They do a senior project where they have to write a proposal, work on the project and then present their project the first week of June right before graduation. Help a little with the senioritis.

Our senior do almost nothing after the AP test.

D is in civil engineering at UIUC (honors), U Mich COE (went on the leadership weekend and loved it), and UMinn Twin Cities CSE Honors.

We are in the east and don’t have the local take on any of these schools, just what we’ve seen on tours and her weekend trip. Any information you might have and could share on these engineering programs from parent’s or student’s or future employer’s perspectives would be so helpful.

Quick poll: She goes to school until the end of June and they do class projects. They used to get a head start on next year’s classes so I’m guessing they’re having a little bit more fun this year. And they deserve it!

I’m a women who worked in a “mans” field. When I started (in the environmental industry) I was on drill rigs in the south with old timers who were not used to a young female as boss. I got a lot of honey’s, sweeties, doll’s, etc. At least they listened to me even if they were rolling their eyes and wondering about their sanity. One guy did show me how to dowse for water and electrical conduits.

S’s school gets out mid May, so no dead time to fill in.

D’s school has all the seniors do internships after AP exams. They can find their own or the school helps them find one. They then have to give a presentation on the internship. No Finals for seniors. Yeah!

Poll: DS has regular classes until finals week at the end of May/beginning of June, then graduation is the following weekend. Same schedule for grades 9-12. For APs they are excused from classes for half a day (and sports for afternoon APs). His school only has APs in math and science. Some kids take AP exams in humanities and language but the curriculum doesn’t necessarily line up exactly. I don’t think he’s taking any AP exams this year - he’s already taken math, language and 2 science APs.

Struggling now with a choice between schools. We were just offered a nice scholarship from an alumni organization that wants a decision by March 1. The other college he is interested in won’t make scholarship decisions until after March 1. The big deciding factor is acceptance in a program at the first school that may or may not be made before March 1. Not sure what to do. First college is less expensive, good program, accepted in Honors College, rural location, awesome study abroad program. Second college less scholarships, most expensive, great program, accepted to Honors College, beautiful but distracting environment, more difficult program, harder to make the grades necessary to get into veterinary school. This is going to be hard!

Perhaps we are out the earliest.
DS’s graduation is on May 20th. :open_mouth:
Where did the time go? :((

Oh my, that’s awful to expect a decision by March 1st!

D’s BF denied at UIUC for CS. Yikes. I feel like for that major you need to go down several tiers.

@payn4ward Graduation on May 20th here too.

Joining the party late but so funny I had to give a @whatsally shout out.

@STEM2017 Congrats on the ASU acceptance and scholarship!

@mamaedefamilia Congrats on Dickinson!

Congrats to all of the kids with acceptances/ scholarships / disappointing news that has arrived over the last few days. These kids are all fabulous.

@hairypottery LOL

@CA1543 I’m not ready to think about graduation yet  I know it’s coming and I’m eager for there to be closure on the app process but it will be a May graduation here so it seems as if it’s coming quickly!
