Cal, holy crap! Congrats!!!
@STEM Congrats!!
@stlarenas My problem with S17 is he want to do EVERYTHING by himself. Every conversation I have with him is pulling teeth even if I’m trying to do something nice for him. He has a birthday at the end of this months, and I’m trying to figure out a present or activity or some way to celebrate. I have been talking with about it rather than making it a surprise because… god forbid I get him anything he doesn’t want these days. And he acts like I’m some crazy insane adults, who’s only purpose is to nag him.
I’m starting to feel maybe I should just forget it and not do a thing for him. Who needs birthday presents. Or a parent funded party with his friends.
Wow, I was just sitting here thinking how quiet things had gotten, and BOOM! 40 messages in a matter of a few hours! Congrats to all the acceptances, and near-acceptances!
@STEM2017 I gotta know, is UF a Big MAC school for OOS?!?
I gotta say, I thought that the JOTD would get more likes. I cracked up all day thinking about that one! Get it? He didn’t think he was a cow, he thought he was a heli…oh, never mind…
@RightCoaster Yes, we got the same NU email. I guess it’s good they’re checking interest, I would say we both have a good shot at this point!
@STEM2017 Awesome news on UF!! Yea!! So, what the new thought process?
@Ynotgo and @srk2017 Congrats on the Berkeley Regents/Chancellors Invite, very exciting!
@30socks HAHAHA, yes it took me a minute but I get it, very funny :))
@30socks it was definitely funnier the second time I read it. So now you have 9 likes. :))
@STEM2017 Congrats on UF. Ds was admitted to UF as well! Congrats to @srk2017 and @Ynotgo on Berkley. Congrats to @CA1543 and @TearsnJoy on WPI. I love seeing all these acceptances today! @RightCoaster that sounds positive to me, fingers crosse!
DS also received an invitation today saying “Chancellor Henry T. Yang, in company with faculty, alumni, and staff of the UCSB, is pleased to invite you to a UCSB reception honoring top applicants.” They have these receptions in Washington, NYC. San Jose and couple of southern CA locations. Looks like they like to give admission decisions at these events.
Which one will you go to @srk2017???!!!
@Fishnlines29 good luck, glad you got same NEU email, I think, who knows lol.
Cool on Berkeley accepts! Yay.
Lots of Wpi peeps in the house.
UF too, I guess I’ll send congrats even though I’m from the other state school with a good football program. Ha, res
@30socks I laughed at your joke earlier, good one
You mean which location @30socks? Probably no one.
Sorry to interrupt the thread but I just had to congratulate family of @STEM2017!!! L-)
Congrats to all of the new acceptances and scholarship success. :-bd
DS17 got accepted into UF. DD14 (who’s at UF now), “She who must be obeyed” and I are excited. DS17 was, until he learned that most of his close friends did not get in. Now he’s suffering a bit from survivors guilt, but I’m sure he’ll be feeling better about it in a few days. He’s already talking with one of his friends about being roommates…
On how competitive it got this year…from UF’s admission site
That’s about a 37% acceptance rate, over the last two years it was 44.4% for the class of 2019 and 42.5% for the class of 2020. For comparison, that’s a lower in-state acceptance rate than UVa or UM-Ann Arbor.
@30socks UF is not a big MAC school. Not an issue for in-state students, since UF’s COA is fairly low (tuition is about $6K a year), and most UF students will have Bright Future scholarships. However, UF’s OOS tuition ($28K+ a year) can be a bit high. They do offer 3 levels of OOS scholarships, $8K, $16K and $20K a year, but these are not common.
@Gator88NE is their yield that high???
@Gator88NE Since you have an older child at UF, can you tell me about online classes? I’m curious because I work with students who are considering UF.
Congrats to @STEM2017 and @Collegecue on UF - that is huge!
And to @Ynotgo and @srk2017 on Cal and Regents! And the nod from UCSB as well!
@socalmom007 Yes, UF’s yield is that high. It’s a bit over 50% for in-state students, much lower for OOS and International students. The high yield speaks to the in-state demand for spots at UF. By the way, UF plans on enrolling 500 less students than last year.
@snorkelmom My DD14 is an Industrial Engineering Major, but she’s taken several on-line classes, mostly in business. She really enjoyed them. The technology has really improved (to the point where students can easily collaborate on projects).
The state of Florida is funding UF to build up it’s online program (UF Online). I know several students were accepted to PaCE
http://www.admissions.ufl.edu/learn/pace/
With all of the credits from AP, IB, AICE, and DE classes, it could be possible to move to campus after one year. It’s really based on your major. Several majors are not offered (like Engineering), and online STEM classes are not recommended for “pre-med” students.
Keep in mind that UF can only charge 75% of the standard tuition rate, and can’t charge for most of the fees. It can be cheaper than your local Florida CC.
If I had to choose between my local CC and PACE, I would choose PaCE (as long as my degree was offered). If I had to choose between PaCE and another state University, I would need to think about it.
This link leads to good write up on how some students are making it work with PaCE.

@Gator88NE, interesting stats you shared. Funny, on how we all pick up on different things. I look at 35,000 applicants and think that is not so much for a school and state its size. I look at how U Penn had over 42,000 applicants for 2,500 spots, or Berkeley and UCLA getting 80,000 and close to 100k. I guess it is all relative. The most interesting stat you shared is how hard it is for instate kids. You are lucky you are not in California. Florida is a great school, and students love the experience… Congrats to the new admits…
Congrats to @STEM2017, @Fishnlines29, and @Gator88NE on UF, to @srk2017 and @Ynotgo on UC Berkeley and to @srk2017 on UCSB and to everyone that got into WPI.
My apologies if I left anyone out.
Hello other stressed parents. I just came across this thread tonight while looking for something else. Been on CC for a few months, and wish I’d found it sooner.
Anyway, I am mom to DS 18 and DS 15, both of whom may be attending college next year, the older traditionally, and the younger as a community college concurrently enrolled homeschooling high schooler.
(I don’t know if you do this in intros., but it makes sense to me…) DS18 is a senior with a 3.6 uw and a 25 ACT. Minimal rigor - two honors classes this year - and 4 years football. He’s been accepted to four state schools, one in state (CA), and three OOS, and denied at one in state. He has, as of now, 10 more apps floating around, most reaches. He just kept adding schools, hoping that would increase his odds.
I’m going to check into that group for parents of B students, because I think my son’s overall stats are more in that tier.
Again, hello all.
