Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

Congratulations to all the good news posts and acceptances! For those that got rejected hugs for your family.

@Fishnlines29 congrats on NYU, fantastic she got into her first choice and having her freshman year in Paris, wow

@vandyeyes great news on Chicago, congrats

@BigPapiofthree welcome to the vandy club! Our kiddies will be together!!!

@michiganbuckeye congrats on making the final decision. A relief to be done

@texasmissy sorry about Claremont. Your D still has great choices.

@LoveTheBard we are still waiting for a number of RD decisions. I wish she’d look closer at Miami. They offered her a lot of merit aid and have been so responsive! Still waiting on Wake Forest, Richmond, Georgetown, Texas, UNC, and UVA. None are automatic. She wants small so less interested in the state schools. Hopefully at least a number of “yeses” if just for self-confidence…

@texasmissy Miami OH or U Miami?

Congrats @BigPapiofthree to Vandy, tough school to get into! Very exciting.

@texasmissy Hang in there! It will all work out.

@RightCoaster Miami Ohio.and Thanks! I also forgot William and Mary. D17 is an “over-apply-er” I think!

@rerunagain @greeny8 thanks so much. This process would be s much easier if our kids could have an adult’s perspective. It’s so easy for me to say “They made a mistake to not want you” or “Go where the LOVE you.” It still hurts. She’ll survive and find the right place, I’m sure. I just wish we could fast forward a month or so and get to the exciting part…

Congrats @vandyeyes, @Fishnlines29, @BigPapiofthree on the admits! And congrats to @michiganbuckeye on making a decision, I wish we were closer to one. Hugs to @texasmissy and everyone else who is getting disappointing news, it will all work out in the end.

QOTD: My husband and I don’t curse much, so the kids never did either. Then my older daughters went away to college, and came back cursing like sailors! My D14 is especially bad, and it drives my husband crazy.

** QOTD: ** Do “Shut the front door!” “Cheese and Crackers!” and “Ice-hole!” count as curse words?

@vandyeyes, @Fishnlines29 and @BigPapiofthree congrats on the admits
Hugs to @texasmissy

QOTD: Almost no curse words here. My DD and I will say shoot…

DD had a melt down yesterday - too much going on , too many tests etc plus she has an interview tomorrow for a scholarship and big weekend event at a college… totally stressed out … makes me sad to watch the unbelievable pressure they are under. Still waiting for lot of RD decisions so that does not help.

@vandyeyes Congratulations! Being done would feel awesome right about now!!!

@TearsnJoy hope the stress-o-meter goes down for your D soon, and good luck on scholarship interview.

Son17’s stress level is kind of low right now. I’m not sure why, but I think it’s because the start of the second half of senior year has started and I think he feels relieved of the pressure to do well in school, sat/act etc. It’s done ( for the most part). If he’s concerned about his pending admission decisions he does not show it. Cool as a cucumber. He is unwilling to commit to any one school at the moment and still feels that he does not have a clear cut favorite. He doesn’t even want to talk about it really. I’m envious of you all that have finalized your decisions.

@JenJenJenJen Ha I’m the same when driving. I don’t drive that much so that helps. Driving through Italy a couple of years ago following Google Maps to get to places I thought all of those roundabouts were going to do me in - especially the ones with 6-8 roads intersecting.

@texasmissy so sorry about your rough night, I second the idea of revisiting some of the schools she’s been accepted to as they are terrific schools! I hope she’s able to move on quickly…

@srk2017

this isnt as funny as it actually sounds…

most Libraries have a few copies of textbooks that can be checked out.

the point of that benefit is that if you are lucky enough to know that and snag a copy it will save you the price of buying it.

how useful in actual life it is i dont know (i’d guess to do this effectively one would be sleeping in front of the checkout desk to be first in line, lol), but that is the sentiment behind it its a nice little perk—maybe not one to base the final preference on, but nice.

Congrats to your S, @BigPapiofthree, obviously I loved my time at Vanderbilt (med school), thus the moniker, and wish him the same…go Dores! Again, Congrats <:-P

@JenJenJenJen Thanks, now we’re in the same boat! I like “flippin pancakes” that’s a good one and your story about “stupid” - that’s so cute!

@LoveTheBard Thanks - I can’t believe she’ll be across the ocean, I think she was in shock last night but still 100% committed to the idea!

@BigPapiofthree Congratulations on Vanderbilt!! <:-P That’s awesome! Was he pumped?

i really try to watch my language but for some reason i found that i started cussing more right around the time we began this college search and application process. i wonder why …

Congrats @Fishnlines29 so exciting to be living her dream!!

QOTD Cursing - None when the kids were young. In fact when at one point S12 was watching Terminator (the first one) with us and Arnold Schwarzenneger dropped an F Bomb - DH turned to our son and said - “when you are in that exact situation - you may use that word.”

Now that the youngest is 18 and DH has begun to lose his filter with age - there’s a little more cursing - but not a lot. We also try to impress on them that it is not necessary, intelligent or attractive.

I grew up in Germany and not around swearing, except maybe the impolite word for “dung”.

The problem I have with American swear words is that I can’t help taking them literally.

While I would hope that most Americans don’t use these words in a literal sense, I can help that they shock me.

And I don’t want my kids to think that it’s normal or no big deal to use these words.
