@TearsnJoy I am so sorry to hear your D had a bad night. My D is showing stress by shutting down a bit, she’s not as bubbly, I get one word answers etc. It’s hard to see. Anyway, I hope it was just in passing and she’s back to herself soon. I made an appointment for my D to get a massage on Saturday and I hope that helps her out a bit.
I had a similar experience when my kids were about that age. We were at a picnic with a family we didn’t know too well. I was chatting with another mom when her little one ram up and said (pointing to my 5 yr old) “He said the “C” word!!!”
I turned bright red and about fell out of my chair. Before I could the other mom grabbed my arm and said - no no its not what you think…that word is “crap” in our house.
Cursing
My H curses like a saylor when he is frustrated.
I always make it clear that i don’t like swearing, so my girls do not swear… at home.
English is my second language.
According to my family, I keep mispronouncing the word “faculty”.
They say I say it like “fuXXulty”. So I’m banned to use that word in public.
Congrats on Vandy, @BigPapiofthree!!
Who else’s DCs are in? @greeny8, @BigPapiofthree, @SincererLove and mine? Has anyone else heard and/or is anyone still waiting to hear?
@LoveTheBard my ds is a rd applicant to Vandy. Do not expect to hear for a while - hopefully mid-march when Cornelius Vanderbilt Scholarships are announced…
@cleoforshort sorry to hear D is so stressed, I really hate the pressures our kids have to deal with these days. A massage sounds great, hopefully that helps!
my DS is also a RD applicant @ Vandy.
Swearing: I mentally swear a lot, I’d say, but it doesn’t come out all that often. My wife never swears—I mean, seriously, the only times I’ve heard her swear in nearly 25 years together have been in scripted situations, like playing a role in a play or singing a song—and she says she doesn’t even think it. D17 doesn’t swear, except very occasionally for shock value (and she recognizes that keeping the rate quite low increases the shock value when it happens). D19, like me, doesn’t swear out loud, but says she thinks it a lot. D23 doesn’t swear, and just kind of shrugged when I asked her about whether she thinks swear words. D25, if she were a Dungeons & Dragons character, would be utterly and completely lawful neutral, and one reflection of that is her utter hatred of all swearing in any context.
Stress levels: D17’s stress is starting to go intensely up—she’s approaching her weekend of hell (not this weekend, but the next), where she has a vocal competition, Model UN (playing the US’s representative to the UNHCR, which would have been comfortable for her if the election had gone the other way, but now…), and an overnight flight to Alabama for their (HN)CBHP interview/competition. Oh—and she’s coming off of a truly vicious cold. (But like I keep telling her, better to have a cold now than a week from now.) Oh—and this weekend my wife and I are taking off for the long weekend, which puts D17 squarely in charge of what is at the best of times an unruly household. (I’m hoping March will feel a lot calmer for her.)
McGill: I can only really speak to research reputation, not educational quality, but for that, it’s a fabulous school (and really strong in my field, linguistics, for presumably sensible reasons). Some suggestion that they’ve been coasting a bit lately, but even if that’s true a coasting McGill is better than most places. I’d send any of my kids there in a heartbeat.
Good idea @cleoforshort , will try to have something like that over winter break which is next week for us
Wow, it’s uncanny. My D just asked for a massage session this morning.
At last annual health check in September, my D consulted about the back/shoulder pain to her doctor. It was definitely coming from stress, I think. The doctor prescribed her 20 sessions of massage therapy. My insurance covers them after co-pay. She started the therapy last October. It’s not weekly or monthly, only as needed. She has been three times so far.
First I didn’t like the idea. Massage therapy for a 17-year-old? They are young!! I’m the one who need massage!!
But I think it’s helping her a lot and I didn’t realize how much pressure and stress kids were under until I read all the other parents’ stories about their kids.
D17 was just named semifinalist for the Robertson (at Duke)!!
@dfbdfb That’s a tough schedule for her but I’m sure she will shine!
@LoveTheBard Wow! She is just on a roll!!! Congrats! <:-P
@LoveTheBard Woot woot!!! Congrats!!!
Thanks for the McGill thoughts @RightCoaster and @dfbdfb.
@cleoforshort, I’m glad your D is happy at UCONN. Honestly, everyone that I know of is very happy there! We visited last year and my D really liked it and I was pleasantly surprised by all the building and upgrading going on there. I think the only reason she would choose McGill over it is because she really wants to be in a city environment. Hope your D enjoys the massage and she is able to de-stress.
@LoveTheBard, @greeny8, @SincererLove,
I know Green8 is going to Vandy? what about others? any decision?
@LoveTheBard your good news just keeps rolling in, congrats!!
Congrats @LoveTheBard!
Open Enrollment period for FB group for active members of this group hasn’t not ended yet If you are done or close to to be done with final decision, it;s time to come over and share more stories @BigPapiofthree, @LoveTheBard, @vandyeyes, @Fishnlines29
@BigPapiofthree - @SincererLove’s D17 is in a very similar situation as mine (and I hope she doesn’t mind my speaking for her, but I’m not going to say anything that hasn’t been said on this thread and on others).
Both of our Ds (whose paths happened to cross when they were semifinalists for a merit scholarship last summer and got a free trip to DC as a consolation prize) have been accepted EA to full-pay dream schools (in my D’s case, Yale; in @SincererLove’s, U.Chicago) and now have some interesting choices to make. I think that they, too, are still waiting on some admissions (and merit) decisions to make the process even more difficult!
These are good problems to have.
Both you and @greeny8 were ED, so your DCs are definitely going, no?
Hopefully. @srk2017 S17 will join the club. I know he was looking at BSMD programs – is that still the case? Does Vandy have one?
@LoveTheBard - My DS applied broadly i.e.some BS/MDs, few Ivies and non-ivies (like Vandy, Duke etc…) and UCs. He had interviews @ 2 BS/MDs. He already has admission at Berkeley, so Vandy have to give some merit.
