Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@CA1543…or in our case…go Maroons!(UChicago)

I just came on to announce D17 accepted her admission to NYU and declined the 3 other offers and withdrew her 5 other applications. @vandyeyes You expressed my sentiment so well, I hope you don’t mind, I will just steal your words with a few edits:

"I completely understand the hesitation in closing out all the open doors after an ED2 successful match…it seemed somehow reckless tonight when we notified all the other pending color=red and accepted color=red schools (and in some cases throwing merit $ to the wind) knowing my daughter had spent hours crafting essays, etc for them each.

A counterbalancing mindset however was that she/we got exactly what she’d hoped for in applying and achieving a success with ED, and that by releasing these pending applications, perhaps in some way, she helped another student get his “dream school”.

The best fallout, as you correctly noted, is however the freedom to indulge in moving forward…planning Admitted student visits, fantasizing about dorms, buying school “stuff”, joining the Facebook group at the school (student and parent!), etc."

got it @vandyeyes

There is always a little natural regret about the road not taken. My daughter did not apply ED1 or ED2 because she wishes to compare her scholarships and financial aid offers. As the mother of a student waiting on RD decisions from 9 selective schools, I commend the students who got into their ED 2 school that have promptly withdrawn their other applications. Hopefully your quick action will free up space in those RD pools for other students-- maybe for friends from your same high school.

It’s time for S to start declining some offers. He has 2 or 3 schools that he knows for sure he will not attend. I’m a little reluctant in the hope that some “miracle” merit money or opportunity might pop in to his account. But he is being more mature (and generous) than me and letting them go.

@STEM2017 Isn’t it funny how our kids can sometimes be more calm and rational than us in this process? I know how that goes too.

DS has 2 schools where he won’t go for sure unless suddenly merit money shows up. No one from his school usually applies to these 2 schools. I guess we will wait.

@RightCoaster we just got back from RPI. The tour was better than I expected. I just saw your response from yesterday. It was a little tough because it was a large group, but the student guide was personable and enthusiastic. The info session on the other hand was very disappointing. We’ll see what happens on March 11.

In other news S17 got a nice additional scholarship offer from WPI. If he commutes, which would only be 20 minutes from home, it would be in line with CSM. That said, I think he’s still leaning toward CSM.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek , if you are a diamond, you are going to shine anywhere you go!! congratulations!!!

Well, looks like we’re done, S17 just said "I’m ready to commit to Colorado School of Mines."

Congratulations to all the new acceptances! I love reading about all the options your kids have.

We had a rough day today. I needed a copy of D’s transcript and shockingly her school sent me one that had a .428 GPA mistake for semester one of Senior year and a corresponding impact on the cumulative GPA. To make a very long story short, this erroneous transcript was sent out to all the colleges she applied to as part of the mid year report. I am beyond upset and frustrated. I keep thinking how hard D has worked and now wonder if it was all for naught. Her school is in the process of updating the colleges with the correct transcript, but I wonder if any schools have already reviewed D’s file and denied her because her GPA looks like it fell off a cliff. I also wonder if 1st semester grades are recalculated by colleges as the letter grades were correct or if they just look at the transcript at this point of the application process.

@vandyeyes – oops - congrats on UChicago!! Fabulous school. Sorry, I got confused by the “Go Dores” in your post.

@Fishnlines29 – huge congrats to your DD on NYU!! I am hoping my DS18 goes there & we have some strong connections - DH -> law school and very actively involved.

@SincererLove - I thought diamonds need work by craftsmen to shine

@Testingearly - I am speechless. How can a school screw up that badly! Glad you caught it. I hope it won’t impact her chances.

@Testingearly – OMG!!! that’s truly awful. It might might sense for you to get the corrected report and also have your D reach out to schools ASAP. Phone calls to her “favorites / top contenders” might make sense too. I really feel for you. It makes me wonder - we never see what the school submits to colleges - we’d never know if an erroneous or incomplete document was sent or factually incorrect statements were made. Scary!

Congratulations to everyone who is done with this process:) We are still in the thick of it trying to get/finalize merit offers. Dear parents- do you have any tips or perhaps know from personal experience of any creative ways to afford Umich? Their OOS tuition is on the level of Ivies. Perhaps it’s not too late to look into establishing a residency in Michigan? Although it does not look that simple. Maybe its easier to receive merit awards while in Michigan (from Sophomore year on)?

@Testingearly anyone looking at it probably thought it was 4.28! I’m sure it will be fine since the GC is correcting it. Even if they thought she tanked and had already put her in the denied pile, they can certainly reverse it when they realize the error. Quite frankly an error of that magnitude would probably have them initiate a call to the school anyway.

@Motiv8tedmom23 That’s terrific! I’m sure he’s thrilled to have decided and what a great school!

@CA1543 Thanks and I think you did mention that to me. Well, if your D18 does go, it’ll also be my D17’s first year on the Washington Sq campus so you and I will have to grab a cup of coffee!!!

I posted long ago on some other thread about our visit to RPI. DD hated the info session - it was given by an athletic director who asked “who cares about athletics? No one? I don’t care, I’m going to talk about it anyway.” The tour was OK.

But somehow between now and then (last April?), RPI might have become her #1 choice. I’m not exactly sure how that happened… :-/

Congrats to the recent acceptances and final decisions made.

@Testingearly - Eeek. I hope everything turns out alright. Having your D email all the local AOs for the schools she still considering will probably help. My D recently sent a short email update and I think all the AOs responded within a couple of days.
