@Testingearly That just happened to us!! About 3 weeks ago, D realized she had to send her 1st semester transcript to McGill herself so she requested it from college counseling. She was shocked to find out that they were using an incorrect version that did not have an updated grade on it and they had sent it to all the colleges. Her school had to send the correct version along with a letter explaining that it wasn’t her fault. We were beyond outraged that this could happen. If she hadn’t requested her transcript, we wouldn’t have ever known about it. And, yes, I’m also wondering if all her hard work has been for naught (and all the money we paid for tuition to this school!) and if it will negatively impact any of her decisions.
The lesson learned here is always request a copy of your DC’s transcripts before they are sent anywhere!!
Congrats on all of the good news, likely letters, admits. commits, etc., and good luck to those going to visit weekends and interviews. @Testingearly there are no words, I am so sorry your poor D must be so upset. The College counselor at her school should call each school and explain what happened and apologize. I also wonder how often this happens and we have no idea. A lesson we might all want to look at our kids transcripts.
@vandyeyes Thank you for your words of wisdom about committing to a choice. While D did not apply anywhere ED, I think there will be some sadness about some of the schools my D declines. She would not have applied if she could not imagine herself taking advantage of what they offer. Of the 9, I believe that the top 4 or 5 runners up will elicit some pangs of regret. This, of course, is a good problem to have and suggests that she crafted her list with fit in mind.
@Testingearly That is awful! Remind me to check D’s transcript. Hopefully the error was caught in time and won’t have a negative impact on your daughter’s chances.
@BigPapiofthree I would nudge the financial aid folks and see if they can’t make up the difference WRT your EFC. “I would hate to have to turn down ED2 because of affordability…” Maybe they can close the gap. I also would look back and think about why your family decided ED2 was the way to go and maybe that will yield some clarity.
Each time I got copies of DD’s transcript, there were mistakes on it. The most recent one, the mid-year report, was school-wide, and affected my son as well. I told the person responsible, and she was very thankful and corrected the mistakes.
I don’t get how this can be so hard?? All the grades are on a computer system - can’t it print a bleepin transcript??
Just popping in from Parents of 2016 with a suggestion. Many of us are finding that our DC do not have quite as much control over which dorm they will be in for Sophomore year as we would like. So, if dorms are of varying costs at the schools your kids are considering set up your budget for the expensive one when comparing costs. It may save you some stress in the years to come. Good luck to all as you complete this process!
@Fishnlines29 in our case it was more of the process being the issue. Her transcript was sent too soon actually. It was sent before anybody had even seen grades on the report card.
My daughter’s transcript is still off my .02 because they didn’t weight a dual credit class correctly. We actually put in her common app to please recalculate gpa, not all dual enrollment classes are weighted correctly. At the time we submitted apps it was .06 off with 3 classes not weighted correctly. I assume most colleges recalculate to their own methods anyway.
@Testingearly was it obvious what had happened when looking at it? I am just so sorry.
I was told the incorrect GPA was caused by a software issue, but I am amazed that there is not some sort of quality control. Before transcripts go out in October, parents are asked to verify and sign off on their child’s transcript. I now see that parents should also sign off before mid year reports are sent. @nocturne21 Where you satisfied with how your school handled the situation? Did they call any of your D’s colleges?
@educationfan when my sister attended UMich in the 90’s my parents had to sign a form saying they are out-of-state and will not ask for in-state tuition while she is an undergrad.
@Testingearly they didn’t call any of the schools. They just sent letters or emails to the AOs. I honestly don’t know if I’m satisfied. Good question. When I first learned of the problem I’m surprised I didn’t have a stroke I got so furious. I was angry about it for a week and then finally let it go. I’m not sure how I feel now and had kind of blocked the whole incident until now. I think I’m going to follow up with D’s school and see if they got any feedback and if perhaps phone calls are in order. I’m a bit wary of insisting on having them go overboard with pestering the AOs and then having that look worse than the transcript issue itself!
S started declining acceptances and withdrawing applications. Hopefully, it will help a classmate kids applying to Berkeley and UCLA. Thanks all for the thoughts.
S wants to decline one school he was admitted to and got the WUE at. The WUE is only offered to about 20% of OOS western kids. He hopes they will allot it to another student.
Chiming in to express my dismay on behalf of @Testingearly. Everyone has covered all the bases already, but wow.
If it is of any tiny consolation, my son had another alum interview today; initial contact was yesterday, so maybe some schools are still deep in the review process.
@educationfan, if U Mich does not look affordable now, it will get worse from what I hear. Upperclassmen tuition is even higher and some students with lots of AP credits will face that sooner than later.
S17 was just accepted to CU Boulder today. Three more schools to hear from. And he won’t even think about making a decision till he has heard from them all.
@BigPapiofthree Don’t bother trying to withdraw applications from UC Schools. I’ve known kids who had gotten into places ED, and theoretically HAD to withdraw. But the UC’s application process isn’t really set up for application withdrawals. Will just have to say no… as soon as the acceptances roll in.
BTW sorry if I missed a big decision. I just skipped over 200 messages. It’s a bit hard to keep up with this board.
I am sometimes surprised by the impact of the sports recruitment fit factor. At my kid’s school, if they get offered a spot they take it and they don’t really consider any other factors beyond that.
