Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

Our experience has been that admissions and FA have been rather disconnected processes. We have run into FAFSA being required for merit scholarships, but not for admissions. I would think a simple phone call would resolved the question.

We were under the impression for many schools that they needed FAFSA if you wanted consideration for merit. We actually didn’t come out full- full pay, EFC of 44k each for two in college :-j

Congrats to all on the great news and opportunities!

@RightCoaster - quick note regarding FAFSA - If your S is considering any MA Universities and is eligible for the Adams Scholarship FAFSA is required.

I don’t know if this adds any clarity but my D is a Trustee at BU and I filled out the FAFSA only last year, they no longer require it to keep her scholarship.

@Dolemite You are right, we didn’t qualify for “federal” grants, but did receive “college” grants from one college along with scholarships.

I’m wondering if the income threshold to be “needs based” for college grants can vary by institution and they can use these to entice students to attend even if you would typically be considered full pay. Some colleges are clear that they require FAFSA for these awards, but others are a bit vague about it.

We finally had “Senior Parent Night” at the HS last night. We now have a schedule, costs, etc of prom, senior week activities, grad night at Disneyland, etc. Also, a long list of the events for which they need volunteers… I felt out of the loop until this point, so it’s nice to know the schedule for the rest of the HS year, even though the waiting on colleges is a bit frustrating at this point.

I’m sure it will seem odd to many of you from high-achieving schools that they spent 10-15 minutes at this late February meeting talking about how to apply to the local community college, take their assessment tests, and get the free 2-year tuition. But, at least 54% of our graduates say they are heading to 2-year colleges. They had useful things to say about dealing with 1st year college homesickness, FERPA, senioritis, sending final transcripts, updating Naviance with acceptances, finding outside scholarships, talking to counselors about financial aid, etc.

I also talked with a friend who works at UCSB admissions. She said she’d seen DS17’s application, because one of her jobs is to separate out the applications for majors at the College of Creative Studies (CCS) and send them to the person in admissions who coordinates with CCS. I have some other info from her on release dates for UCSB if anyone is curious, but mainly she confirmed the March 21 date.

@Ynotgo It sounds like your HS did a nice job informing you. My D said we have senior parent’s night on March 2nd, but the only reason she knows that is because she was asked to work the event. No notifications have gone out about it!

We had parent coffee about these things back in October? Februrary/March seems late.

We do have a parents/student talk evening talk coming up next week all about how to enroll in Community College. But as my son now has 4 acceptances… we aren’t going to bother.

D just received her UMD scholarship award. Even without B/K it is now in play. So, excitement in our house right now over some excellent choices (International Relations and Arabic Flagship Program)

Congrats @WhereIsMyKindle! Was she being considered for B/K and this is just a different and unexpected surprise? Great to have the majors covered and money!!

Congrats on more MAC @WhereIsMyKindle !

I’ll be up in Berkeley with DS17 tomorrow and Sunday. He’ll be doing an overnight. Let me know if anyone who lives up there wants to meet in person. I already have plans to meet @srk2017.
