Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@BigPapiofthree - We were in NYC to see Hamilton the play. My S22 knows every word to every song. He had been asking to go for over a year. The tickets were his Christmas present that the rest of the family got to benefit from.

@cleoforshort I was signed up for UPromise for many years (but they wouldn’t link it to my 529 for some reason). It has changed a lot and got less convenient so slowly stopped using it. For a while my IL used it too. I cashed out once or twice (maybe $1k total for both kids).

@snoozn how was your trip?!

@dfbdfb Hope you post an update on your d’s perception of cbc.

So Expedia doesn’t allow D to travel to Vandy herself due to her age (she is 17) . Is there any site that allows 17 year old to make the trip by herself? I think we want a delta flight inbound and AA outbound so we don’t want to go to airline sites yet.

Congratulations to all on the great news of acceptances and scholarships!

@Fishnlines29, it was great aside from missing H and kids! My 85 yo Dad has always loved cruises, but had to spend about 12 years taking care of my Mom who had Alzheimers. His only vacations during that time were to come here (he lives with my sister across the country). My Mom’s been gone a few years and he wanted to take my sister and me on a cruise so we did a 12-day southern Caribbean cruise (St. Thomas, Antigua, Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Maarten - none of which I’d ever been to). I’m not really a cruise person, but it was fun and I enjoyed snorkeling (sea turtles!), kayaking (hard!), Segway (ya should have seen my Dad going full speed!), and general hanging out (relaxing!). If we have any money left after the remaining two kids get through college, I may have staked out some future vacations for H and I when we start empty-nesting.

@SincererLove I’m confused. D has been traveling all over and she’s 17. The hotel reservation can be tricky. But not the flight. Book her an adult plane ticket.

@SincererLove Have you only tried Expedia so far? What about Travelocity? (though I think they’re the same now)

We book D’s solo travel directly w the airline sites. She uses Southwest the most because we live between 2 major southwest cities.

@snoozn welcome back, so glad you had a great trip!

@itsgettingreal17, congrats on the Kentucky MAC!

Welcome @linsweet and congrats on the acceptances!

@SincererLove I had the same issue with Kayak and Expedia. I ended up using the airline site since it was the same to and fro. You could do what @itsgettingreal17 does and just choose Adult.

@SincererLove It’s a quirk of Expedia that requires purchase of an adult ticket for any age child. I promise it isn’t a problem. I used to have to do that when D traveled as an unaccompanied minor. I had to buy the ticket as adult on Expedia and call the airlines to add on the unaccompanied fee and info to the ticket. 17 year olds can fly solo. They can fly solo at a much younger age in fact.

@itsgettingreal17 Congrats on the bigSTACK!

@SincererLove These days there is no cost downside to booking one-way tickets directly on two different airlines sites yourself, just a modest hassle factor of having to enter the information twice. I booked independent travel for my daughter when she was 15 and I believe we had to check some box attesting to her maturity and responsibility level to take care of herself and that was it. She was old enough that there was no surcharge.

Congrats to all on the latest scholarship news! I have fallen behind as D’s show opened this weekend and I’ve been maxed out. She was glorious, if an unbiased mom can venture an opinion. :wink:

Great scholarship news @itsgettingreal17 !!

@SincererLove, I’d second booking through the airlines’ websites directly. I find it generally cheapest to go that route, anyway (after comparing fares on Kayak or Hipmunk to decide which airlines to use).

This kid under 18 thing does complicate matters. Mine won’t be 18 until nearly the end of the first semester of college… we can’t send her off for second visits of any schools alone because we can’t book her a hotel.

my DS turned 17 last month only, so we will have same issues @socalmom007 .

I’ve sent a 17 year old on a flight with an adult ticket, but I’ve not had to book hotels. My more immediate problem is sending a 17-year old to school when she can’t legally give permission for non-emergency medical procedures when she could need treatment for her Crohn’s at any time. She’ll also be due for a Remicade infusion the same week she moves to school, so I’m going to work on either scheduling it to happen before we leave or getting the registration/permissions done in advance but I’m not sure how successful that will be. At her current hospital, I have to sign discharge instructions because they don’t permit underage patients to do it themselves.

Fortunately, she’ll turn 18 soon after she starts school. sigh

@socalmom007 Call the hotel nearest the school (even better if one affiliated with the school), and ask to speak to the manager. Many will work with you. My D has checked into multiple hotels by herself so far like that.
