@LoveTheBard My D only had one conflict and she decided to turn down the school. It was the one school that was willing to be flexible. For the competitive scholarships, they absolutely will not accommodate you. If you can’t make it for the full time, you’re out of the competition and your spot given to another.
Sorry, @youcee…it does have a lot of plusses, but my D17 isn’t convinced that it would be a fit for her…she was impressed with the prospective Trustee Scholars as a group, but didn’t feel like she “clicked” with them…
@NerdMom88 - I remember one school, probably Rice, that guaranteed only 3 out of 4 years of on-campus housing. Rice is nice (I’m a poet and I know it), in that it has residential college system. It was my understanding that most took the off campus option for their junior years when they were more apt to study abroad, etc.
@LoveTheBard Regarding conflicts, I would call and ask. D was invited to a scholarship weekend and the materials stipulated that the candidate “must” attend in order to be eligible. She had a conflict that was non-negotiable and we put in a call and there was some flexibility. Granted it was not a top 20 school but why not ask politely and see what happens?
Getting shown lots of love from prestigious schools is not a bad problem to have. Sounds like your D has many wonderful choices to contemplate!
@itsgettingreal17 - that’s what I feared…
D17 has at least 2 and possibly 3 scholarship competitions overlapping. Yeesh.
Congrats to all with good Uconn news!!
QOTD: I think my DS will go with a random roommate as not many of his friends are applying to the same schools.
I think it will be good for him broaden his horizons and all of that jazz!!
Hey I don’t want to brag too much… but my son came home this afternoon and told me he was the school’s Pickle Ball Champion for 2017. He was full of pride and said it was one of his greatest accomplishments in high school.
Ha, lol.
All you guys with kids with full ride schollies and fancy pants ED admits to Top 20 schools don’t have a Pickle Ball CHAMPION right?
Proud dad moment.
Is it to late to update his RD apps with this major accomplishment? Will it push his app over the top to admittance everywhere and bucket loads of merit $$ ??
@RightCoaster Congrats on having a champion in your midst! You should be proud especially since he is so thrilled …
Update all of those RD schools of his major accomplishment =D>
I took Raquet Sports one year for PE. Pickle Ball is AWESOME
@RightCoaster - That’s both Bigly and Yuge achievement
@RightCoaster you just made me spew my bourbon!
I am a 2016 parent and I think I love @RightCoaster.
@RightCoaster Darn, I thought I had something funny, but it’s McGill University, not McDill. Oh well, try, try again.
@NerdMom88 We learned of this at Tufts during our visit there. It was the first school where I realized they did not guarantee housing for all four years. On campus housing is only for freshman and seniors at Tufts. Boston College does not guarantee housing for juniors.
@jmek15 things have changed at BU regarding grant aid this is from the BU website
The BU Scholarship Assurance enables you to plan for the cost of your entire degree. The Boston University aid offered in your first year is guaranteed for each of your undergraduate years.
The grant aid you get as a freshman is guaranteed as long as you have passed 12 credit hours a semester with a GPA of 2.0 or higher.
Posting this for anyone who has applied to BU.
@RightCoaster Best post of this thread… priceless ! Thank you for keeping it real. My sincere congratulations to the pickle ball King!
@NerdMom88 I haven’t heard of that anywhere else. But I have heard about it from Rice from someone’s who D is attending. Her D did get housing her sophomore year though. It does seem odd that way… My guess is the upperclassmen have special dorms. And the sophmores fill up extra space in the “regular” freshman ones?
@paveyourpath Tuff’s does this as well??? Crazy because that area of Cambridge/Somerville it’s difficult and expensive to find housing.
All hail the pickle ball king!!! @RightCoaster
@curiositycat333 That’s was one of the reasons we left the day of our tour and never looked back. When I asked where the students would live, the tour guide said the campus is surrounded by private homes the students rent. My mind immediately went to S17 calling me in the middle of the winter to tell me he was freezing because the heat went out and the landlord hadn’t fixed it.
I realize that S17 may tell us that he wants to move off campus at some point but I’d rather it be a choice he makes as opposed to having to do so because there is no option for him to live on campus.
Long live pickle ball!!! @RightCoaster
I used to play something called Wally Ball (cross between Volleyball & Racquetball) in college. Does anyone still play this?
