Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@srk2017 She is at UConn as a bio major. She decided that she didn’t have a heart for medicine. I think she’ll end up minoring in sports nutrition and then go to grad school for a PT or AT degree. She’d like to work with athletes. D entered UConn in the Pre-Kinesiology program for AT, but once she started to practice with her team she realized she couldn’t row and do the required clinical work.

I’m just posting to say that the waiting is driving me nuts. Still waiting to hear from TWELVE schools. I think I’m more anxious about it than my son is, because at least he has tons of school work at the moment to keep him busy. Yesterday I made a spreadsheet of all the known or likely dates on which he’ll hear from the schools. Probably still at least 10 days before he hears anything.

@soxmom – oh man that’s a long wait but you are almost there! He has safeties where he’s been accepted though, right?

@srk2017 Big congrats to him on the BS/MD acceptance! That’s huge! <:-P

Best of luck to everyone as we head into mid-to-late March. S has 15 to hear from, starting probably next Monday. He has plenty of things to distract him, including the AIME today. Good luck to anyone with kids taking that today, though it doesn’t really count for anything at this point, which takes some pressure off.

He has one school that he’s been accepted at, which was very exciting at the time. But now I’m thinking that I really don’t want him to go there (perfectly good school, but far from home and hard to get to). So now I’m back to being anxious again.

@soxmom good luck with your wait. I agree it is painful at this point. My son has been busy with school and some extra curricular events so he’s more relaxed than his parents. We are fortunate that he has some good choices already, hopefully you have at least comfortable safety. If we didn’t have any results back yet I’d probably be losing my mind. We have a friend that has gotten into the state safety, but deferred from 5 other schools ( very good student too). His parents are losing their marbles.

** German phrases: **

Love them, especially the name of the German National Football (soccer) Team…

Die deutsche Fußballnationalmannschaft.

That one makes me giggle.

The worst part about waiting for final decisions is that we will have approximately ZERO time to make our decisions, pay enrollment fees, choose housing, visit?, orientation, etc, etc.

I’m really starting to worry about scheduling and processing during the month of April. Again, I envy you folks who are done - congrats!

Right there with you, @soxmom! We are anxiously waiting to hear from 14 schools. Granted, 2 of them are poor fits and D never should have sent an app since she really has no desire to attend either of those schools, but there are still 12 viable schools to hear from. I’ve started to organize drawers (Konmari method) in my house during the evenings to keep my mind off of college stuff and maintain some sanity. 8-}
It’s actually helping me to feel more in control and seems to be working! Plus my drawers look so nice now! :smiley:

We’ve heard from 7 and are just waiting on 2, but they are probably the most important 2! Expect to hear from 1 at the end of this week, the other, who knows? The school is notorious for late decisions–I’m sure I won’t have any fingernails left by the time we finally hear!

Can’t remember if there is anyone else out there waiting for Muhlenberg RD…if so, did your kid get portal info? D17 says she never did, but their website does mention a portal so I’m not sure if we should be following up with that or not. Kinda late at this point, I guess. I checked the CA and it does look like the app and everything got downloaded to them properly so not sure why there would be an issue–got portals for all of her other schools.

@srk2017 congrats on more options!

@RightCoaster, I think your son applied to Miami U of Ohio? Did you know about their Tuition Promise?

http://miamioh.edu/about-miami/tuition-promise/

@nocturne21, so funny about organizing your drawers. I was just looking into the Konmari method the other day, as I’ve heard about it but never really knew what it was. Too big a commitment for me, at least at the moment, so I opted instead to occupy myself by downloading a new list keeper app (Wunderlist) and organizing all my tasks and important information. It’s the electronic version of what you’re doing!

On the topic of having to make a quick decision and sending in forms and money, does anyone know the schedule of how tuition/housing/fees are paid? After making the initial deposit, is, say, half due in the short term and we’re billed over the summer for the second semester? Any info from people with older kid in college would be so helpful - esp since D is leaning towards the only school who hasn’t given her a dime :frowning: so serious advance planning is a must.

I know this topic has been discussed several times during our 28,500 post journey, but does anyone here think I’m a bad parent for requiring my S to borrow $5,000 each year to pay for a portion of his tuition? He will be studying engineering and will hopefully land one of those $60,000 jobs they all talk about in admitted students day :))

His monthly payment would be roughly $200 for 10 years. He can pay it off early if he is doing well, or I can help him with the payment if he is not.

Anyone with me?

As a (second-language, but high-fluency) German speaker currently in Germany, I have to speak up in defense of the language—I mean, is that really any sillier than gorgeous or butterfly?

@STEM2017 Definitely not a bad parent! I don’t want my D having any loans, but parents requiring some is a personal decision and doesn’t reflect poorly on parents.

@dfbdfb Touché!

Do you speak French, too?

@mommdc

Miami U tuition promise is a great idea, but did anyone else notice that their tuition jumped to $35k/yr this year?
