Long time reader but I need to come out from under my rock- if only to vent while we wait and wait!!!. But now i feel like i need to join the party because there are two things that are driving me out into the open.
My Husband needs those shoulder exercises!!! He fell on the ice (6 weeks ago) and still can’t fully move his arm.
And any advice on negotiating aid packages if you were laid off in the middle of this crazy application process? His last day was shortly after he hurt his shoulder- (not related to the injury however. LOL)
@dfbdfb – WSJ will allow you to read the article if you enter it via searching, so if you just type in the title that @sdl0625 provided, you will be able to see the full article. But if you enter via the provided link, you will encounter the pay wall.
What’s Worse Than Waiting to Hear From Colleges? Getting Interrogated About It
@5redheads I am in a similar “significant change of financial status” situation. You need to call each and every financial aid department of the schools you are interested in. They will guide you through the multitude of forms to fill out and documents to submit. Then you wait and pray. I haven’t had any results yet but they have promised to give consideration to my situation.
A rollercoaster afternoon here. S got accepted to UC Davis with a Regents scholarship (and a surprising amount of additional aid), did not get Regents at UCSD which we were thinking he had a good chance at (plus admitted to 2nd choice college), then received what is considered a likely letter from UCLA Engineering. So all’s well that ends well. Plus top 5 at the robotics regional halfway through qualifying which is a big surprise (streaming the webcast).
D got an email from MIT swimming coach regarding Pi day. I don’t believe she is fast enough to swim for MIT and we never fill out any questionnaires. The email refers that day as the day “we find out the future MIT engineers that we get to welcome to the family” and she is looking forward to speaking with D next week. What does this mean? Does that mean D might be admitted there??
@SincererLove — I would take the other side of a wager on that one for you and pocket my money!
MIT has something like 30+% participation in varsity athletics. Recruiting does not operate the same way there that it does at Ivies or NESCAC but I still think it is a finger on the scale.
Are you sure her times are not good enough? Have you looked online? Is she registered with the NCAA clearinghouse? Am curious how the coach got her name.
D17 rejected at UCD and UCSD, BF waitlisted at both. Rough day over here. Cal Poly slo looking better and better, which is fine for the parentals, rough on the teens as they just want to be together. Lots of decisions to come, hope the choice becomes clear.
For those who requested an update, S really enjoyed the trip to UMD CP. Excited to say that it is definitely a contender! For background, he was accepted for engineering and scholars but isn’t really interested in participating in the scholars program.
His Top 3 reasons for liking UMD…
Awesome engineering facilities, including a building with new ME labs scheduled to open in July, and a great engineering living/learning community.
In his words, "it's a happy place." People seemed positive and happy to be there - And not just the tour guides, he did an overnight and met a lot of students who weren't being paid to say how much they loved the school. He felt there was a nice mix of kids - thinks he could find his people.
Pretty campus with a lot of green spaces. No mountains ( which he loves to be near) but still good. Already spring in MD while in MA we are waiting for the next blizzard to hit on Tuesday.
Other bits I was able to glean before he headed out to a friend’s -
Dorm was normal, “not dumpy”
The engineering living/learning community dorm is air conditioned which is important to a kid with severe tree allergies in spring and fall (the engineering honors dorm does not have ac, btw).
As you would expect from UMD, which has an awesome D1 team, they have good club LAX.
When I asked for any negatives he had to stop and think about it, and noted that the the dorm is far from classes, but he could easily use a bike to get around. The food isn’t reputed to be all that great, but he didn’t go to a dining hall. They have a great food court, so he could eat there if necessary.
Weird—even going through Google I hit the WSJ paywall, no matter whether I use Chrome, Safari, Firefox, or Opera, and no matter if I use incognito mode or not.
@jmek15 I’m glad to hear about your son’s successful visit! My D is looking forward to visiting on the 31st and checking out the engineering facilities and the DCC living/learning community. When will your son be making a decision?
Looking forward to hearing if you had an opportunity to broach the discussion with your son during your car ride @RightCoaster. We’re still waiting on decisions but there is one school on the list that will offer NMF and will give actual credit for APs which could be a savings of $150K. I haven’t pointed this out to my son yet and will wait for decisions to come out. I haven’t even pointed this out to my husband or, well, for a man who has no idea what an admissions portal is, he’d be trying to figure out how to login and click “accept” even before we knew if there was an acceptance.
@CT1417 , finally got hold of D. D filled out recruitment questionnaire in Feb. I didn’t even know — not told. Anyway, I looked at the results…it seems that they might need flyer, as some kids might be graduating soon. D’s fly time is in the middle of the pack there, but she has been improving year after year without swimming club. I am still not 100% sure if she is in and… we are so hoping she is in!!
@SincererLove Best of luck on MIT. Being a part of an athletic team is a great way to make friends right away. It is very demanding time wise, but worth it. I was a diver in college–participated for 3 years. Got a great education, but some of my best memories are of my time as part of a team.
@jmek15 Maryland is a great school and the engineering program is tops! Best wishes!
