Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

No buses here in Nor Cal either at least not in my area. Hang in there to all of those affected by the storm ~O)

No, the only school buses I know about are for special needs students. Otherwise, no buses. You drive or maybe walk? My kids high school is several miles from home though, no way to walk.

Our elementary schools have buses, but only for kids who live more than a mile or so from school and for special needs kids. The secondary schools have contracts with the local public bus system, which runs special lines at school start and end and kids can get monthly passes.

our district in (NorCal) have buses but we never used them since we are out of district.

In midwest, snow melts and then freezes turning streets into ice rinks. I went to school in snow belt.

In CO, snow does not melt. It is dry and sunny here, so snow either sublimates or evaporates quickly. No icy roads (barring exceptional days.)

Stay warm and safe everyone! :x

We have buses for > 1 mile in elementary, >1.5 miles in middle, or any distance if you have to cross the train tracks. We have a very busy track running through town and I believe it is state law that kids cannot have to walk across them.

I don’t think it’s a law @VickiSoCal , I know in our district there are neighborhoods on one side of metrolink tracks and the high school on the other side.

Good news items for D17 in the mail today:

[ol][]She’s been accepted to Muhlenberg—not a surprise, since she’d already been invited to apply to their honors program, but still, good to get the official letter. No word on aid until later in the month. (It’s her top choice, but we can’t afford it without lottery-level—as in they only offer it to five students—merit aid.)
[
]She’d already been informed (and it’s purely stats-based anyway), but she got the official notice that she’s been awarded the Presidential Scholarship at Alabama.
[]She got a letter saying that she got into the (Horribly-Named) Computer-Based Honors Program at Alabama.
[
]She’d already been admitted to Smif, but she got the t-shirt today.[/ol]
Also, we parents got a (really, really boring) letter about how great Earlham’s gen ed program is, and so we should send our child there.

Our CA district didn’t want to have buses. Mostly elementary schools are within walking distance. The district had had busses for field trips, H.S. sports etc. But the only kids bussed are special ed and those in my neighborhood and we have to pay for the privilege. My son took a bus K-8th…

But some parents even in my area would prefer to drive their kids every morning to get 20 more minutes.

D17 got the last of her honors acceptances today, this one from UAH. Someone had added a handwritten note at the bottom, telling her that her essay was “delightful!” Perhaps they took note because she is a STEM geek?

In western PA, where we were supposed to have 4-8 inches and woke up with none. D and DS20 are disappointed. D said "this is what I call fake news!! "

at the jersey shore, mine was equally disappointed to wake up to no snow and pounding rain…not to mention the fact we actually still had school.

its been a rough morning.

Only 1-3 inches of snow here in NYC - boo!

But school is cancelled-yay!

Surprised that school was cancelled here in Western NY. There was only 1.5" of snow at our house–I think the school districts around here are going soft! The county & back roads were a bit slippery, but main roads were fine this morning. Although I guess I am glad thst S17 doesn’t have to drive today… S15 is also home from college on spring break, and DH works from the house, so I’m the only one out in the weather today…

@Momtaro I love Emory-I love the area, I love the campus, I love the doctors at the Emory medical center. If you can afford it, it’s a really nice campus with a lot of very smart kids.

Snow and Atlanta-I grew up in Boston, and for years I’ve endured ribbing from my Yankee relatives about the chaos that ensues when it snows. The problem is that the snow is different here-it’s very wet and slushy, and invariably melts a little (because the ground NEVER freezes here like in MA) and then the snow freezes to black ice, which nobody can drive on and it can’t be plowed, and then everyone tries to go home at the same time to buy bread and milk.

The longest power outage we ever endured was over a week, and this was when we lived in close-in Atlanta (versus OTP=Outside The Perimeter). Our house had above ground power lines/telephone lines, and the neighborhood was surrounded by giant old trees. It ALL came down during the huge ice storm of 2000. I was 3 months pregnant with D18 at the time, and it was miserable. I hate big trees near houses.

I’m on my spring break this week, which is good because my college was just shut down due to an inch of snow (but again, it’s the ice that is the issue-steep roads in the mountains+ice=no bueno for driving).

Mother Nature is not disappointing in Central PA. Snow is coming down heavy, and we already have over a foot on the ground. I’m be making soup and baking cookies while DH & DS dig us out.

No school buses here, everyone lives close enough to walk, all grades. There is transportation for students with needs.

Snow started sometime this morning in MA. My company is open, but I am working from home - we are advised to use our discretion - which means most office personnel work from home. DH and S12 work at the same company and they opted to close today. S17 has a snow day and D16 is home for Spring Break this week - though her campus offices also closed.

The longest power outage we’ve had was 8 days due to the December Ice Storm of 2008. The rest of our road had power back in 4 days - but a neighbor 3 houses up from us had their generator hooked up wrong so when the power came back up for everyone else - our transform blew and three of us had no power for another 4 days. The power company moved on and didn’t realize there was still a problem on our road. We would call and they did nothing. DH’s stepfather, who lived across town finally drove to the Municipal Electric Company office and told them the three addresses that had no power on our road and they came back to figure out what happened.

Im surprised regarding the No Bus school systems. I’ve never heard of that. Learn something new every day.

Snow is finally starting to come down in earnest here in eastern MA. I was a little dubious when I woke up to less than an inch on the ground this morning. Kids were off yesterday for teacher in-service day, out today for snow day, and it wouldn’t surprise me if they were out tomorrow as well for clean up. Lots of kids walk to school, and if people haven’t shoveled/plowed, it’s dangerous for the kids to walk. Our HS has one bus, for kids who live up in the heights (about 2-3 miles away from the school). Then city buses (the T) are used for a few routes–these buses aren’t available to the general public during these runs, just to students. The rest walk, drive themselves, or are dropped off. I take mine (they could walk it, and they do walk home, but I am a softy and drop them off on my way to work).

@STEM2017 I don’t think you got proper kudos for your awesome answers to the essay prompts. If I were an AO, and I read your application, you’d be accepted in a heartbeat!

8 inches in Southern Westchester NY followed by sleet now - ugh!! We have power though.
