Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

^I think the first 6 months of Amazon Prime student is free. My D signed up in the summer once she had her .edu email address and rented her books from there, they were waiting for her when she arrived at school.

Someone here on CC mentioned Sambucol. Elderberry extract tablets. My D told me the other day that her roommates think they are magic.

@mommdc I think you’re probably right about the first 6 months being free. We kept it after that because it’s half the normal price and shipping to an Amazon Locker on or near campus is fast and convenient.

@youcee

Adding Student Amazon Prime to “must have” list.

Great tip. Thanks!

Mail: I would like to add if you student has any problem with campus mail, maybe get a PO Box. If there isn’t a local post office nearby, a lot of those mailing places (UPS store, etc.) have post boxes for rent. At D15s school, they didn’t have campus mail except for large packages because the post office was literally across the street from the school. They suggested the kids rent a post box. Nothing was lost.

My handy dandy short list for first aid…much already mentioned…

Motrin/ibuprofen (skip the Tylenol)
Allergy pills–Allergan or Zyrtec (non-sleepy 24 hour)
Anti-diarrheal–often forgotten but when you need it…! Lomotil generic.
Zicam–ward off the cold. It’s expensive, nice to have handy but not necessary. Send the whole bottle.
Decongestant–psuedoephedrine (from behind pharmacy counter. The other stuff doesn’t work as well.
Neosporin (or other antibiotic cream)
bandaids

You don’t need full size bottles-- just take a bit of what you already have at home.

Use small plastic containers and label them. Works great (works for creams too).

Type directions if needed on another sheet. Stuff in a zip lock.

@STEM2017 You don’t even have to create a new account, just use your son’s .edu address to qualify. While fast shipping to the kid is nice, what’s really important is The Man In The High Castle and Bosch series are available with Prime.

^brilliant!

Chiming in briefly to say, yes, be aware of acetaminophen, alcohol and liver issues. Even normal doses of acetaminophen can cause severe liver damage if taken with alcohol. Personally, I wouldn’t include it in any college care package for that reason, when ibuprofen works just as well in many situations.

We’re in the last week (I think) of notifications (waiting on Wellesley admissions and possible Smith merit aid). After that it’s decision time. I am so eager for this to be over!

One caution: If you do things like sending smaller quantities of what comes in BJ Sam’sCo medicine bottles with your child, make sure that you transfer the expiry date from the larger bottle to the smaller container—potency isn’t guaranteed after that date (and in a very few cases, lack of additional adverse effects isn’t guaranteed after that date).

D-mannose capsules for that feeling you might be getting a UTI. We buy the NOW brand usually.

XLEAR nasal spray for when you feel a sinus infection might be brewing. I don’t leave home without it.

The $49 student Amazon Prime seems to work the way the $99 Amazon Prime did, in that I can log in as my son, we have multiple CCs and multiple delivery addresses. I do not know what the difference is other than that the streaming services may not be available for the first six free months, but I think they are available only you start paying the $49. I have not used streaming so cannot confirm.

Agree about transferring from Costco bottle to smaller container. When older son started school, I bought him a smaller size for Tylenol & Advil. He brings it home each summer, we use up anything remaining, and I refill from new Costco bottle each fall.

@curiositycat333

We heard at a college night last year that the Florida State University System (SUS) recommended that state universites do not consider the SAT Essay portion as part of admissions. Just one anecdotal example, but I do not think the state of Florida is alone is distrusting the validity of the SAT Essay.

@CT1417 With regular Prime we were able to share it among several accounts within the same household. With Student Prime we can’t do that. No big deal, I just do all the ordering then. Yes, we can have multiple CCs and multiple delivery addresses, but 2 separate accounts can’t share Prime. Only an issue if another family member wants to order something like a gift without you knowing about it.

D’s college recommends the following books. I’m not really a parenting book fan, but this is a pretty big transition, so I’m considering buying at least one of them. Wondering if anyone has read any of them and found them worthwhile?
Letting Go: A Parents’ Guide to Understanding the College Years
Almost Grown: Launching Your Child from High School to College
Don’t Tell Me What to Do, Just Send Money: The Essential Parenting Guide to the College Years
When Your Kid Goes to College; A Parent’s Survival Guide
The iConnected Parent: Staying Close to Your Kids in College (and Beyond) While Letting Them Grow Up
I’ll Miss You Too: An Off-to-College Guide for Parents and Students
The Naked Roommate: For Parents Only: A Parent’s Guide to the New College Experience: Calling, not Calling, Packing, Preparing, Problems, Roommates,…Matters When Your Child Goes to College

@youcee --you can suppress/hide the info for an order, but I have the feeling that the text delivery notifications will still go out to whoever signed up to receive them.

I guess I never used regular Prime the way it was supposed to have been used. My son and I just log in under the same account now. I use it more often than he does, so I need to be sure to not select his CC when placing an order.

Update - DS said he didn’t see a bunch of UGA tee shirts or hear any talk about it. He did have one guy in his class wearing an MIT tee shirt and DS asked him if he was going to MIT and the guy said yes.

My son was accepted to Richmond today. His twin sister was wait listed. The NPC was off from the actual offer so it is NFW but… UVA’s Days on the Lawn was great today and he really likes it. We are just waiting for WM for him.
DD has one more school to hear from. I can’t wait for this part to be over.

@twoforone99 at dotl did your ds attend any classes or talk to professors? I would love for my ds to choose uva but he isnt feeling it yet. We go to dotl apr 14

Do RA’s keep a supply otc medications and first aid supplies? We’re minimalists. I can’t imagine sending more than ibuprofen and cold medicine.
