Anyone here know anyone who goes or went to Harvey Mudd and have any insights they can share?
@nw2this --I don’t remember my RA ever really being around much. Why wake up the RA to get a bandaid or some Gatorade?
@nw2this – Not in our experience. You should pack your own supplies. My D’s RA freshman year did, however, offer to drive and accompany my D to student health/ER when she was ill with fever, etc. (the thermometer was handy). She ended up not needing to go, but we thought that was very kind and above and beyond.
These kids get (and stay) sick a lot, especially early on. Seem to go through lots of DayQuil/NyQuil type meds … though maybe we should come up with a better option that does not have acetaminophen, now that I’ve read all your warnings. Advil Sinus/Congestion maybe. Open to suggestions.
I guess it is an individual thing. My kid rarely gets sick or injured. It has been many years since she woke us up in the night. So I’m willing to risk that in the off chance she needs something, she can find a drug store or a person like this: tps://medlinks.mit.edu/.
@nw2this You are so lucky to have a kid that rarely gets sick or injured! Any tips or secrets you’d share with us on how they’ve been so successful?
@nw2this I’d be a minimalist too if I could just go to someone else to get stuff I need! I love it!
I second @Atyraulove – tips to never-sick kids are too good to keep secret!
Sensing hostility. For asking if RA’s give out meds? Time to go into lurk mode. Best to your kids. :-??
@nw2this, i felt it was a fair question. Don’t blame you.
@letsshare - you might want to try to dig up some of a user named intparent. Her D just graduated or is graduating from Mudd and was very happy there.
@nw2this I doubt that RAs would be permitted to dispense even OTC meds. Too many chances for issues with possible allergies, reactions, etc.
ETA: I don’t think there was hostility from anyone; just a difference of opinion. If your child remains generally healthy, good for you both! I have an illness-prone klutz.
@LoveTheBard thanks! Someone actually pm me and gave me the same name. I did and she already responded with great info. Mudd is different from all the other schools my s was accepted to but he really likes it so we are trying to get as much info as possible before he decides. Btw congrats on your child’s acceptances!
@letsshare - My pleasure. I can’t comment on the Mudd experience directly, but I think the Claremont consortium is great and I was very, very impressed by the presentation at a 5-college presentation that the Mudd admissions person did (it was the best among the group…too bad my kid is not big on math and science!). And thanks for the kudos.
concerning refillable water bottles: they need to be thoroughly washed every day! More bad bacteria than your dog’s dish.

@crazym0m At DotL we went to the college of arts and science session. We live 30 miles from grounds so we didn’t need a tour and the one parent session was later in the afternoon. My son wasn’t interested in the prospective student social. He goes to UVA for school all of the time for the library. If you have never been to UVA I would do all of it. You can find the program online.
I was impressed listening to president Sullivan speak, very sad she is leaving. I hope your son likes it, it is a great school.
Medical stuff-H says that going to the doctor is my hobby, but really, it just falls under the obsessive organizing that I like to do.
Some of the things that I’m working on (largely thanks to this thread and the Bama parents FB pages)
- She's up to date on all vaccinations, including the HPV 9 shots, the regular meningitis, and the Men B (Bexsero) shot. Actually she has 1 more Bexsero, but that won't be until April. Her sister D18 is the same.
- Wisdom teeth: consult over spring break, teeth out (for both girls) in June. H is going to take the day off and hopefully both girls can have it done on the same day.
- Found an internist near campus at UA. During Bama Bound we'll pop in there and meet the physician. If we like her I'll do all the new patient stuff for D so the internist has her allergist, pediatrician, dermatologist, yadda yadda yadda stuff on file if she needs to come in.
- I remember my skin really flaring up with acne when I went to college, so I'm setting her up with a derm to do some acne facials and get on some good topical creams (no oral antibiotics). She was doing this when she was first having some bad skin issues, but she (and I) slacked off with the cream and her face is giving her issues again. I'm also doing some acne facials for her with a good aesthetician that I like who uses LED light therapy to help heal. I'm hoping if we get can her face looking good and send her off with the cream, she'll be fine.
- Getting her eyes checked, just in case. Usually has really good vision, but I think it's good to do a comprehensive vision thing before she leaves.
- Making her a 3 ring binder with all of her doctor's names, phone numbers for local pharmacies, stuff she's allergic to, copies of her insurance card, and other good bits of info that she might need at hand. I might call it the Binder of Adulting. :D
@MotherOfDragons – Wow – you are on fire!!! Impressive. I feel like a slacker - I think DS has all shots needed so far. 3 ring binder - good idea though my DS likely wouldn’t refer to it - maybe I can get him to put info in his phone. maybe there are good college Android apps he can use too. Will set up dentist appt soon & physical. Can’t set up anything near school till we know where he is going. @Mom2aphysicsgeek I think mentioned USC has good medical facilities students can access - it makes sense to check into what’s available at the top contender schools. DS does sometimes get sick – like right now - hoping not strep.
About the medical stuff-I think this is one where we just have to respect each other’s different parenting styles. I’m making sure D17 gets a physical and discusses the 2 meningitis vaccines w/ her doctor b/4 she moves 2,000 miles away. We’re also buying the college’s health insurance because our HMO will only cover emergency and urgent care out of network, and she already has our HMO insurance card. Other than that, I don’t plan to buy/send any medical supplies or info. D17 is sitting for the EMT certification exam June 10. I figure she take care of herself, figure out how to buy ibuprofen, etc. Of course, when we’re doing dorm shopping, if she mentions wanting to buy ibuprofen, etc. I’ll be happy to let her throw it in the shopping cart and I’ll pay for it.
I guess the one benefit should son17 decides to go to NEU would be the fact I wouldn’t have to deal with all that doctor nonsense! I could just drive over and give him some meds or take him to doctor if he needed help. Knock on wood, I don’t think the kid has been sick in 15 years. Maybe all of the exposure to stinky gross lacrosse equipment and exposure to Arctic temps on the ski slopes has helped him build up a resilience to germs? Ha.
@twoforone99 Congrats to your son on Richmond. Hope his sis isn’t taking it too hard…
@DMV301 Advil (generic ibuprofen is same) in combination with pseudoephedrine (behind the counter - need license) does wonders for the sinus cold/pain. It’s the OLD version of Advil cold and sinus and works much better than what they sell now.
@nw2this I didn’t sense hostility from anyone and you had a good question; stick around!!!
@RightCoaster Yes, except when he’s traipsing off to London!
