@MotherOfDragons, you are on the ball! Very impressed! I screenshot your post to remember it all. Many thanks!
Aha! @snoozn Thanks for arranging the weather for me :))
@twoforone99 @crazym0m D and I attended DotL at UVA yesterday. It was a beautiful day so the Rotunda and Lawn were just gorgeous. I thought the College of Arts and Sciences breakout was great (one of my professors was on the panel and is a legendary Econ prof). His nugget was that UVA is really the sweet spot between a larger university and a LAC. Professors seem genuinely interested in developing relationships with students. My friend’s daughter is a first year there and she showed us around on Sunday. That was really helpful. Didn’t attend any classes or the student social. Overall, it was pretty great and my D is close to committing to UVA, so I am very happy. 2 more schools to hear from this week.
@dfbdfb Congrats on the giant scholarship! Muhlenberg is a great school!
For anyone looking for a way-too-long, but comprehensive and alphabetical(!) packing list of everything you might possibly need/want for college, there is a stickied thread re this under College Life. It’s kinda crazy, but first-timers might enjoy…or not!
@stlarenas – Love the Google drive idea for all those important forms and lists.
Yea to all those with great news and good visits!
I will certainly look back over the medical kit suggestions, but I’m just wondering if anyone has any experience with children with chronic problems, specifically migraines. My daughter has had them for 12 years. She is on daily medication and has a 504 plan at the HS. I definitely want to contact her college of choice as I anticipate that she may need some assistance/accommodations.
@firstwavemom --with a chronic issue like that, I think you would be super smart to get her established as a patient with a private provider in the city where she will be attending school. Or will she be near you?
@payn4ward Glad you got into Boston during the “not too bad” weather and that the NEU visit was a good one. I’m not looking forward to those 14 hours travelling and in airports in reverse of yours coming up in my near future. S17 is trying to reach someone to make arrangements that will allow him to not have to fly out to Colorado for a 6 hour orientation. If it were a two day event - we wouldn’t have as much of an issue with the trip.
@carachel2 She will probably be 2.5 hours away from home. She doesn’t really need care, just lots of sleep to get over them. I’m just worried she will get a migraine on the day of an exam so we would need something in place for her to have the ability to make up without any problems. But, it would be nice to try to find a provider nearby nonetheless. Thanks for the suggestion.
@firstwavemom – is there any way to get her a private room? Seems like that would be super helpful!
@firstwavemom – my D17, was diagnosed with a chronic illness last year. Her school set up a 504 plan. I’ve been in touch with the national support group for this illness and they have suggested that we visit the Disability Office of whatever school D17 will be attending to set up accommodations for her when she arrives on campus. I don’t think a school decision will be made until later in April…still waiting on some decisions and making at least one more campus visit.
@firstwavemom – off topic but we are VA residents and I love following Dean J on twitter…she has been posting a lot of photos from DOTL…perhaps I saw you/your DD!!!
@Mom2aphysicsgeek You are amazing. Thank you for sharing your story about the parenting challenges you have faced. Clearly you are a great advocate for your son.
@dfbdfb Wow! I know she was hopeful for Muhlenberg. It’s a great school and my D considered it for quite a while but ended up not applying because it didn’t offer a language she wants to study. She did that summer neuroscience program there, right? Many congrats!
My daughter is returning from visiting four campuses in the Midwest and I am pretty sure that she has narrowed the list to 4 of her 9 applications. So time well spent!
@firstwavemom I’m similar to @thinmints. My D was diagnosed with a chronic illness right before senior year. We didn’t file a plan with the school; they’ve just been working with us. Her doctor will complete the documentation to set up a 504 for her and he will help us find a local provider once she settles on a school (which will be either 8 or 12 hours from home.)
I’ve been checking on how 504 plans are implemented at schools, and it varies a lot. Check with the Accessibility and Disability Service department (or its equivalent) on how you register with them, how much advance notice they require, and how the plan is executed. For instance, at UMD you have to re-file every semester, take your documentation to each professor and have them sign off, then return it to the office.
I plan to visit the department during orientation to touch base. I will also be going with my D17 to visit a prospective physician to get her care routine and her infusion schedule established. (D17 will still be a minor.)
Hope this helps!
@firstwavemom LOL if you raised your hand for having had that professor I was sitting behind and to the left of you
I contemplated speaking to you knowing you were an alumni and possibly there but my family would have died!
I told my husband that I thought there was a CCer there. I loved the session too. I spoke to Dean J for a few minutes when we first got to the Rotunda and thanked her for being so informative on social media. I was really impressed with the DOTL and would have signed up myself if I could.
@carachel2 My D did mention the possibility of a single room. I don’t want to press it yet. She is shy so I’m conflicted since having a roommate would be good for her for that reason and because it is good for her to learn to live with another person (warts and all).
@twoforone99 That is so funny. There were about 7 or 8 of us that raised our hands. I was down in the middle front section. Did I look like a CCer? Would have been nice to know someone there. My daughter didn’t talk to anyone. She actually had a mini-migraine that morning and I was think, “Uh oh, now she’s really not going to get much out of this.” She rallied, though!
@NerdMom88 and @thinmints Thanks very much for the advice. I will definitely pursue the disability office or whatever it may be called once she finally decides.
@youcee thanks for your 2 cents, they were well received.
@twoforone99 how coincidental your kids were in Shanghai! Please tell me about that experience!
@dfbdfb Wow, fantastic news on Muhlenberg! I’m glad she was thrilled and sorry to hear she’s sick, I hope she recuperates quickly! Since you may be time zones apart - I’m about an hour and a half drive from Allentown and am up there a few times times/year to visit with clients. So, if you need a mom figure to check in or bring soup - please do not hesitate to reach out!
@payn4ward Thanks for the trip report for NU - very interesting. @snoozn I really liked NU when we visited last fall - it was one of the better visits.
@Motiv8tedmom23 If it is a matter of picking up a packet or something that I can help with, please PM me.
I am famililar with Mines campus and know several faculty and admins at Mines.
We could be * In loco parentis * for each other. At least, I can be one for your DS.
I would highly recommed TSA Pre or Global Entry. Denver airport has the worst/longest security lines.
I missed flights several times … I know… by not allocating enough time. The airport is too far from the city to begin with.
I believe Mines will provide free eco pass, so at least the RTD to airport will be free
We paid $2.75 to MBTA.
Aaaaaand she got into Colgate.
Regular decision. Which isn’t supposed to happen in the real world.
ETA: With a really, really nice handwritten reaction to her essay—longer than Smith’s, more content-filled, though maybe not quite as warm, as Mount Holyoke’s.
(Not affordable, since they only give need-based aid—really good need-based aid, it turns out, but still not affordable—but we knew that going in. This was her for-fun “Let’s see if I can get accepted at Reachy McReach College” school.)
This makes her success record 12/12, with her only rejection being from Alabama’s University Fellows program, which amuses her.
