@Mom2aphysicsgeek My D is 6/6 and is still waiting to hear from six more. Right now her top two are Smith and Mount Holyoke, and she is still waiting on Scripps and Bryn Mawr (both today, I believe), Barnard (tomorrow), and Vassar, George Washington and Brown (next week). Her merit offers have exceeded our expectations and we are excited and grateful! A couple of days ago she said, “Even if I don’t get into ANY of the other 6 schools, I love my options right now.”
Gee, gotta help get that page count up!
Let’s see…
D (finally) got her first acceptance!!
St. Lawrence, which is one of her top 2, with 30K in merit, plus a little bit more in need-based. Very nice package! She’s waiting for her other top choice (decision Friday…can’t come soon enough), but would be very happy with SLU (and might even choose it regardless). I would just really like for her to have a choice. She deserves that. She was only going to apply to these 2 schools…likes to keep things simple, and we were basically certain that she would be accepted to SLU…but I convinced her to find a couple more to throw apps at.
S is 6/7 (one WL), with 2 decisions coming in today, and 3 more after that.
One full tuition-PLUS! (is that a big MAC!!!)…school not at the top of his ‘wow’ list, but that offer has definitely elevated it for him! The school only gives 2 full-tuitions (one girl, one boy, I think). He’s envisioned himself surrounded by intellectual peers (wants “a lot of smart kids”), so being identified as the top applicant causes some mixed feelings (understandably). It’s interesting. Certainly a great position for him to be in!! We are lucky, in that we CAN pay what the more selective schools, with good FA, will cost, so we will not be pressuring him to decide based on money. But “that savings could help with other things down the road”…so there’s definitely incentive for him!
Nice to have some decisions rolling in, but am SO ready to have all the decisions in hand so we can start planning for any necessary visits…the waiting is exhausting!
Still waiting on 5 decisions and they are all private schools so we are keeping expectations low. S has good options from the 6 acceptances he has in hand, so he doesn’t seem to be too nervous. I am distracted by the suspense (and dread) which is unfortunate in terms of productivity at work. In fact, I’m late now…
S17 attended the UA reception at Tysons Corner VA last night. Big turnout (as usual) and it appears to be many accepted students in attendance. They handed out Bama Bound yard signs to those who have committed. We are still on the fence waiting for two more schools to come back and for additional FA and scholarship info from a 3rd. Looks like we’ll be down to the wire for a decision.
@smcirish loving her current options is the best case scenario for your D! Congrats!
My D has been admitted to six with one deferral and waiting on four more decisions.
I am interested to see if she gets accepted to USC and what aid they will offer her for NMF.
Since we have not had the chance to visit, this one is a total wildcard for her.
It’s been all good news so far, but want to be prepared in case of disappointment next week. [-O<
@WhataProcess Wow, congrats and what a relief for her I’m sure! A top choice with excellent $$!! <:-P
@HSCounselor2 if you are referring to USCali then she should get offered 1/2 tuition Presidential and if she doesn’t get NMS then another 1K. Possibility for some smaller dept awards.
My D is waiting on 4 more. In at 10 with 2 definite NFW. Waiting on scholly a nd FA packages at some.
@Mom2aphysicsgeek – will do my part to contribute to the 42 page goal. I sense a LOT of activity here by March 30th at least.
One deferral, one rejection, six admits and one likely letter, a couple with small amounts of money, one with a research stipend…all over the map.
Half a dozen outstanding plus LL & round two on the deferral. Will be with you all here until the bitter end.
Son17 is done with all application decisions.
Down to 3 choices. 2 full pay at 70K, 1 less $$. Son leaning towards 2 full pay schools. It’s absurd thinking about spending that. But we’ve worked hard to save and he has worked hard in school to get accepted to a couple of schools he really likes, so we are fortunate in that regards. I tried to get him to reconsider state Flagship, but he’s just not into it at all. It’s too bad, UMass seems to have gotten better lately, and after visiting numerous times through the years I think it’s a decent value for what you get.
I think he will decide this weekend. He’s visiting NEU for accepted students day. I think he will come home with some swag and it will be decided.
RIP bank account.
DS is 4/4 and waiting on two more decisions. He is so much more relaxed than me… as usual.
3 more to go here. Brandeis decisions come out tomorrow night, then two more next week.
Waiting for 3 more here. March 30 - April 1 for all 3.
Not holding breathe for any of the 3.
Virginia Tech is in the lead by a bit at the moment.
DD is currently 7-0-1 with 1 remaining of her 9 apps. Top 3 choices are still in play awaiting scholarship results. If she gets the scholarship that she’s currently a finalist for, I am almost certain that will be the choice. Otherwise, I think I know the decision between the other two.
Onward and upward…
@RightCoaster We are in a similar situation with our daughter. Still waiting on 2 long shots and would be full pay. Just made reservations to revisit a favorite (full pay) , a 10k merit per yr school, and a $25k merit per year school- never visited. If she gets into her #1, I will cancel the trip and drain her account. Unfortunately, we let our eldest go to her dream school and twin will be going to his (ED) full pay, precedence has been set. Hubby has told her that he would give the difference to her towards grad school or house down payment. She really has no concept how much a $100k is and how hard it is to save that amount of $$$. All the schools are ranked between 20-50. She can get an amazing education at any of these schools.
D has all her decisions: 5/5 with merit aid and Honors College/Program at all 5. Her merit aid ranges from Grand MAC to a slider (1/4 COA).
She’ll make her decision after a revisit next Friday. Negotiating the gap year arrangements will follow.
We are full pay but with a much lower budget. Her list was built around schools that met her academic needs and our budget.
I’ve missed a LOT of good, and sad, news around here so congrats and hugs to all!!!
It’s odd here, we’ve had all results now for a while (last one was 2/15) and while in some ways that’s a good thing for lots of time to evaluate, it’s also dragging it out. 7/7 but we didn’t go for anything remotely selective, hunting merit. Still a rollercoaster with the top 3 but leaning towards a top 2.
@5redheads & @Mom2aphysicsgeek thank you for sharing your stories, very powerful and I am grateful your children were blessed with such amazing parents.
@dfbdfb Whopper Mac! So outstanding and a Colgate sunday to round out the full meal deal. What a lovely day.
@socalmom007 I am heartbroken for your kids (D and her BF). I was so rooting for SB. Not even a wait list. that’s beyond rotten. His experience really has me wanting to steer S19 AWAY from CS! I suppose SLO/Irvine is better than across the country from each other but that’s still hard. What are they waiting on east coast wise?
@WhataProcess very happy to read your D has one in now as well!
@WhereIsMyKindle ha ha on the slider! Love that one. It’s still better than nothing in my book. Hmm…what is 1/3…a double cheeseburger?
@Calimom3 good luck, I hope your D gets into #1! @Dave_N good luck, I hope you guys get the $$ needed! @STEM2017 good luck on your long stretched out process.
So, the one thing I’ve learned from all of this, is that if you live in the Boston area, and your kid wants to go to school around here, it is very very competitive. Even if you kid gets in, there is a high chance you will receive a lesser financial aid package and little to no chance of merit unless your kid is a rock star student with crazy high stats.
None of the kids my son has talked to at school received 1 cent of merit from NEU or BU. Most of the kids were waitlisted/rejected from BU. None of the kids he knows that applied to Babson got in. Several waitlisted at Bentley and only 1 recieved a 1/3 scholarship offer. Crazy! Son has several friends that got accepted to local schools with sub par financial aid packages and just can’t make the numbers work. Sad.
These are all kids performing at a pretty high level academically and scoring well on sat/act, but maybe not at the 34-36 ACT level. A lot of these kids applied to schools all around the country with much better results. My Son19 has expressed in an interest in looking at some schools in other areas of the country perhaps, so I will take that into consideration. The amount of applications that the Boston schools are getting is mind blowing and distorting things.
I think a lot of kids at school at last week got a reality check in terms of acceptances and $$ last week as I’ve seen an increased number of Facebook posts with kids accepting less expensive/prestigious schools.
@RightCoaster – so, since you’re on the subject of Boston-love (and in the interest of page goals here), mind briefly sharing a handful of your very favorite things to do in the city? It does seem that (despite the weather, which maybe some might consider a negative) every one of those Boston area schools is “hot.”
@WhereIsMyKindle I like the slider analogy too! :)) I think we got one off the Value menu or Dollar menu. A Junior bacon cheese burger.
@RightCoaster I agree.
Too late to move to Idaho or Wyoming and raise an underwater Tuba player.
@RightCoaster @Calimom3 . We have to still wait for the 2 “dream/reach” schools, which are around 60-70K per year. All the other 3 that D has gotten into are in the 40’s. i struggle every day with “if she actually gets in, do we make the necessary sacrifices”. For what she wants to study, these dream schools (GW and American) will make a difference (international studies with a lean towards politics, and minor in judaism). Being in DC has advantages. With another child in 2 years , what do we do with him? he wants CS/Gaming, and will likely do better with Merit as long as not a top school. in that field , where you go is not as important. I guess if the answer is No at the two reach schools, this will be easier to decide.
