Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

I don’t think we’ll have a problem getting to page 2017 by April 1. We are pretty chatty. I meant to post on my birth year page, but it slipped by. 1998 and 1999 are coming up soon.

S is waiting for 6 more, which should increase his denied column substantially. So far he is 9-1-2. (That’s win-loss-draw, right? I’m not really a sports person.)

I also want to thank @Mom2aphysicsgeek for your touching post. Your parenting in tough situations is amazing. I know it can be difficult to share detail about complicated issues, and I want to thank you for doing so.

As always, congrats and hugs spread liberally as appropriate!!

@socalmom007 - Be brave and post the #s. Beauty of CC is no one knows who you are.

Lol, I’d rather not! It’s over 20 :blush:

Based on the percentages given, I’m guessing 24.

@youcee uses math!

Lol. S’s number is 18 and I think @srk2017 is somewhere around 21. Don’t feel bad. That is an impressive number of essays!

I will neither confirm nor deny =D>

@socalmom007 - our number is 21. We perfected “Essay Churning System” and even went out of country for vacation right after Christmas. I will be marketing ECS for next session =))

My daughter wrote the common app essay and the UC essays last summer, I was able to help her adapt those 5 essays to nearly every other prompt. For the record, I would never recommend anyone apply to this many schools. We had weird circumstances, and it still doesn’t look like it will work out!

Wow, 20+. D’17 is so burned out on the essays for apps and scholarships and honors colleges that she refused to even apply for the local scholarships through the high school. None of them are big, but I think she might have received one or two.

But, no, she is done.

If she gets the last remaining open scholarship, she might reconsider and write one more honors program essay.

@dave_N - We didn’t do many scholarship essays or didn’t apply for honors anywhere, 5 UCs have same short essays. We started with one lottery SCEA, 7 BSMDs and 5 UCs. once those are done, we started adding more schools as essays are being done.

@Mommertons Congratulations! I bought our plane tickets Saturday, which required envisioning the departure from our house to determine how early of a flight we could take since we are 2 hours from the airport. Picturing D giving a backwards glance to her bedroom and a last hug to her precious cats started the tears flowing (again)!

@srk2017 well I like your proven results so I will be buying the ECS once released.

I still think you people with 20 apps are a bit nutty, but I can’t discount your success. Bravo

Wow! Wow! Wow!
I am amazed at the extraordinary results that are happening here. The level of accomplishment, acceptance, merit opportunities, and camaraderie are special. I am thrilled for all of you, and personally suffer from an inferiority complex.
In a couple of weeks as more decisions become solidified, I suggest we build an evolving list that might help future lurkers. We should list our avatar name, Where Child is attending, where accepted and what type of MAC, and where denied. This info could really help the next generation. Just a thought. Saw it in years past on other forums, and found it helpful.

@BigPapiofthree — or monetize it!

Speaking of compiling results, I, for one, nominate @eandesmom for the first annual @fallenchemist public service award for the heroic amount of effort and work to have completed the list of results on the http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1871275-parents-of-the-hs-class-of-2017-3-0-to-3-4-gpa.html thread.

I lurk on that thread to learn about schools and results for S’20, even if the gpa figure is still a little aspirational.

@eandesmom list on the other thread is epic. Truly a labor of love. Hopefully some posters with younger kids can find some encouragement there.

I agree. I’ve bookmarked that thread to use when S21 gets older. Thanks @eandesmom! =D>

Results, results…

All of DS17 acceptances are in, and he’s down to choosing between UF and Georgia Tech (for aerospace engineering).

He’s pretty much set on UF (as is the rest of the family) and we’ve started to put down some deposits.

I’m the lone holdout (probably trying to overcompensate for my obvious pro-UF bias). In early April we should finally get to see GT financial package and GT had invited him apply for the Goizueta scholarship.

Even with the scholarship, DS17 is still likely going to choose UF. He really didn’t like GT’s urban campus, while he really, really likes UF/Gainesville.

I have nothing but admiration for families with 20+ apps and those chasing tippy top schools. I’ve felt like an underachiever here all year, but at least you cool kids let me come play. =))

The reason we have over 20 is chasing BSMD, chasing lottery and UCs becoming unpredictable. We are full pay and given the demographics we didn’t chase merit that much since I was told you need to be pointy and DS is well rounded.
