OBERLIN!!! With a big MAC on the side.
@mamaedefamilia Congratulations!
Wow…how to deal with all the rejections…My daughter is first in her class of 600 seniors, has a 4.0 UW and a will have a 4.4 weighted (was 4.65 when she applied), SAT of 2260 for the first one, 1530 for the second one. She has been rejected everywhere but our state school and Cal Poly. I’m glad we at least got those, but it is so disheartening after all the work she went through to apply. Her essays were good, too!
Okay, it’s all in.
Accepted:
- University of Alabama (Presidential Scholarship)
- Tulane ($30k scholarship)
- Colorado School of Mines ($5k scholarship)
- RPI ($25k scholarship)
- Virginia Tech (in-state)
Waitlisted:
- Northeastern
- WPI
- University of Rochester
I guess it’s down to Bama, RPI and Tulane with a slight chance of VT. Bama and RPI has the major he wants. So really may come down to those two.
@Istirl I’m so sorry about your D’s rejections. I hope she likes her state school and Cal Poly.
@lstirl I’m so sorry. It sounds brutal. Hugs =((
@lstirl Are there any applications still outstanding? I’m so sorry to hear that - I know a number of high stats kids who have gotten WL or rejected from top schools and that really surprised me. I think the higher the ranking, the more unpredictable the result. It’s been a tough year. I hope she has options that she will like.
I ended up at my state school back in the day and it was a great experience.
@mamaedefamilia Ultimately, she will be fine at University of Washington or Cal Poly. They are fine schools. It is just so depressing when she gave so much of herself to be outstanding. I would have hoped she would at least get into ONE top school. I’m not sure what she could have done differently except maybe take the ACT too?
@lstirl I doubt the SAT was the issue - those are great scores on both old and new. The 1530 new SAT is roughly equivalent to a 34 ACT. Where else did she apply? Some of my D’s friends got incredibly capricious results that left me shaking my head.
U Dub is a fantastic school! If she got into honors, there are amazing perks including a year-long study abroad grant for which honors undergrads are eligible.
@mamaedefamilia No, she didn’t apply honors at UW. The issue with UW is she didn’t get direct admit into a department (another rejection), she just got “pre-engineering” which means she still has to apply to the engineering departments directly and they are highly competitive. It would really suck to go two years pre engineering and then not get into a department!
@lstirl I agree with @mamaedefamilia. I doubt it had anything to do with the SAT. Sorry it has been so full of disappointment. How is your Dd holding up? Is she happy with her 2 choices? It only takes 1 good choice. The rest end up being ignored anyway.
@lstirl I assume she got into Cal Poly as a direct admit into engineering? That is a great school for engineering. Beautiful location too. Their engineering tour on accepted students day a few years ago is the best college tour we’ve had.
@youcee Yes, she did get direct admit at Cal Poly, and I’m sure she will be happy there, so it really isn’t that bad, just disappointing when so much work was put in. And we are still waiting on Vanderbilt, but with all the rejection, I’m not counting on it. I think it is even more competitive than the other schools she applied to.
Thanks everyone for talking me through this!
@lstirl - I am going to cross all fingers and toes for a happy result at Vanderbilt!!!
@lstirl, yes I agree with @Mom2aphysicsgeek , you can only go to one school. Rooting for you like @mamaedefamilia and others!!
@listirl
I know hi stats kids who were shut out of Cal Poly and UW (direct admit engineerinf and CS) both last year and this. In her situation I would choose SLO hands down. We have a very happy junior there. It is an excellent school.
After getting deferred from early action to regular decision, S was waitlisted at Binghamton.
So strange how it all works out. Accepted straight to his major at 2 top 50 universities (UF and OSU) and waitlisted at Binghamton. I guess the competition was fierce this year.
Anyway, Virginia Tech is the leading horse in this race. They’re showing lots of love. And we love them for it.
It is probably for the best anyway. Thanks again for the support.
@mamaedefamilia Congratulations!! <:-P
@lstirl Oh that’s rough, sounds like SLO is a winner though!!
@STEM2017 It certainly has been interesting. VA Tech sounds like an excellent choice for him!! I can’t wait to hear what your son ultimately decides.
@STEM2017 The results are certainly weird. S17 has 36 ACT, but waitlisted at NEU, WPI and UR, and was given his second choice major at VT.
