Congrats @Mom2aphysicsgeek I’m sure your D will be very happy at USCarolina.
@RightCoaster Does your son think his accent will be cute to all the British girls I don’t think it works in reverse If he does end up in London don’t let him get suckered into being a Spurs or Chelsea fan. Gooners all the way!
Just to be clear my D did not win a Trustee’s at USCali. She does have the 1/2 tuition Presidential stacked with the Tuition Exchange award. She would also get the $1K mentioned in the letter above and the there are also opportunities for small departmental awards. One parent told me her son has the same deal and he’s getting Full Tuition + $10K a year. I’m not sure how they treat outside scholarships. And in case anyone forgot we are visiting in mid-April. It’s far from home but a great deal for us and seemingly a good fit academically for this Neuroscience major. So we’ll see.
@RightCoaster Oh that makes sense if they have an option to choose at this point in time. I figured since they had to put down their choices on the app, they just assigned locations already.
@AngelaD Wow, thank goodness she didn’t toss the letter! Congrats on Duke!
@RightCoaster I will be anxiously awaiting your S’s final decision. I had never heard of 1st sem study abroad programs until you mentioned Northeastern’s. I am intrigued and plan to look into it for S22 when the time comes.
@AngelaD - D got the same letter, with an indication of funding that we can expect: a whopping $1K!. Seriously?? Hat e to look a gift horse in the mouth, but what is $1,000 gonna get you at a full pay school?!?
@AngelaD – good lesson…glad that you actually opened that mail! Similar story with William and Mary…DS14 got a likely letter there but it came in a standard post card size correspondence. Knowing how easily I could have lost that, I was on the look out for D17 to see if she would receive one. Lo and behold, she received one and it is now about twice as large :-B Congrats…you seem to be on the receiving end of lots of good news!
Thanks everyone for the congratulations and good wishes. Congrats to the other USC(ali) trustee and presidential winners and those who are done! So many excellent results to call out, I don’t want to miss anyone.
Support to those who haven’t been recognized as they should and to those waiting in these last few days of March madness.
I’ll give away my secrets for posting the animated gif.
First, I made sure to spoilerize it so that you don’t have to see the silliness everytime you load the page.
The tags for that are:
[ spoiler] Spooler stuff [ /spoiler] As always remove the spaces.
The animated gif is just any animated gif from around the web hiding in an image tag. As long as it is not from a blocked site, I think it displays.

Putting those together:

Now, I expect you will see bars around my avatar soon.
The waiting is still just killing me. I’m a planner by nature, and not knowing what April is going to look like with revisits is just killing me. Plus we celebrate both Passover and Easter, so I’ve got those to contend with as well. DS got rejected by Williams, one of his top choices, but is still waiting on 3 more schools that would be high on his list. At the moment, he’s been accepted by several good schools, but none that he really knows all that much about or is excited about. So if one of the others doesn’t come through, we’re going to need to do at least 3 revisits, maybe 4. Sigh. Why can the decisions all just come on one day, like they do for boarding schools???
@Mom2aphysicsgeek Congrats on the decision for USC(ar). It sounds like a great opportunity for your daughter!
Congrats to @AngelaD on Duke likely letter. And yes, we also got a skinny envelope that looked like one more form letter that turned out to be a significant scholarship award. So check any and all envelopes!
@RightCoaster Those first semester abroad programs sound like fun. I hope the NU visit goes well; I like the idea of alternating coursework with co-ops. Changing things up probably helps to prevent burnout as well as providing valuable job experience.
We are in a holding pattern - hoping to get news on the 9th of 9 applications today. Depending on the result, D may be done with revisits, or there may be one more trip in store. So far she’s 8/9 acceptances with MAC at 7 and has eliminated five schools from consideration. Not too bad a place to be in at the end of March.
Good luck and serenity to everybody who is still waiting!
@NolaCAR Freshman semester/year abroad is becoming more popular! List of schools I’m aware of that do it for the full semester or full year are: NU, BU, NYU, Syracuse, UMD, Florida State U, Arcadia. There are some other schools that incorporate classroom learning at the main campus with a trip or two during the year which is also a nice option if someone is more hesitant.
@soxmom - I’m with you on the single date release. That would make things less drawn out. This waiting and ups and downs are hard. These early writes and likely letters are a new wrinkle I learned about here (and S was lucky enough to get one earlier this month). I just want to know all the choices so he can start to figure out a top 2-3.
Vent - Families should have at least 6 weeks to make a decision once all info is available (including financial). We are paying (well, most of us) but schools still leave us dangling until the last minute, forcing rushed/emotional decisions. 6 weeks, is that too much to ask??? Can I hear an AMEN!
@jmek15 - It seems to me that there should be a 6-week (or 60 day) turnaround on both ends. We shouldn’t have to wait four months for a decision, nor should we only have four weeks to make ours.
Frankly, I think schools do themselves a disservice by waiting so long. Some of D’s schools had all but fallen off her radar from the time she applied until the time she heard back. In the interim, other places have caught her fancy.
@jmek15 I wholeheartedly agree. We are spending Spring Break in London at one of D17’s top choice schools so that leaves very little time to revisit the US choices. Final decision came yesterday and merit is pending at one school that may or may not come by mid April…ugh. I feel especially sorry for those who are still awaiting results.
@Dolemite We know someone at USC who sounds like a similar major as your D (computational neuroscience) who is doing research as a 2nd year in a collaboration with Viterbi. Sounds like some really good opportunities there.
@Dolemite good luck to your D on her visit to Cali. Sounds like a great deal! Can’t beat the weather either!
Son17 is looking forward to some EPL games. He’d probably like to meet some nice British ladies to show him around. I dated a British exchange student when I was a senior, loved her accent, and she had great British fashion sense and liked listening to British musicians. Good times!!
@RightCoaster If he does go to London. A great way to see the stadiums and some up and coming players cheap is to go to some Academy matches. Like going to a AAA game.
