I’ve caught up on 30 pages yay me! Unfortunately my ipad blipped and I lost all my comments I carefully saved as drafts
So congrats to everyone, so sorry about various bad news, and good luck to the testers today!
My comments:
D is done with testing (except if she does any APs next year–her schedule is still in flux, which is ok because we’re homeschoolers) unless she does make the NMSF cutoff for our state, which I doubt.
D’s roommate at her summer program has to take the SAT today. I cannot imagine, especially since she’s been doing research 9-5 every day.
D has not sent any scores to any schools yet. The plan was to wait until applications because her list is not firm.
She faced the “what other schools are you considering?” question for the first time on Tuesday (not an official interview but with someone who will easily remember her after this summer). Luckily she can fall back on the ol’ Arabic Flagships and schools with 8+ regularly-offered Arabic courses beyond the “advanced” level (I guess most large schools would number that at 300?).
I cannot remember any cute or quirky things she’d say or do when young. Does that make me a bad mom?
She has a very difficult time selling herself but is learning that college app season is not the time to be modest
Adjectives: focused, challenging, reserved
I have an Ole Miss report to share but dh wants to go to the gym together now, so that will have to wait.
D will be sleeping in today. She had a long and grueling day at work yesterday, but is off today. She has work again tomorrow. Next week she gets to relax a bit but the following week marks the beginning of her summer of paid work, volunteer work, summer camps/programs and that dreaded 4 credit course - College Admissions Essay Writing 101. :))
She also has A LOT of homework this summer for her fall classes. how about your kids that are already finished?
Well I’m off to freecycle D’s gigantic stack of SAT and AP exam prep books…
Our school doesn’t assign summer homework, thankfully. Their main reason is that you aren’t guaranteed to get the classes you wanted until you get your schedule the week before school starts. I usually check in with the counselor on summer duty before that, and will certainly do that this summer because he needs for his 4 HS classes to all be in the morning.
I am new to post… Seems like a great group to be in!. D has done 2 subject IIs in May and I think that is it. Regardless of the scores. So many schools are moving away from test scores anyways.
I am really interested in getting some advise for merit based scholarships. We live in east coast and hope to stay close to home.
Good luck to all who are taking the tests today!!!
Count us in for summer homework. Two books one for English one for Psych.
D said Math 2 went well. Easier than the practice tests in PR she says.
Talked to D about two invites to meet with local reps of schools she is interested in for coffee. She needs to get dates on the schedule. The rep from her current #1 went to her HS. Small world.
Next week she begins an internship at our kids hospital in the Genetics dept. Not research, more clerical in nature I believe.
Two weeks from today D and I head to SE KY for 3rd annual ASP trip for a week. Fixing homes. Maybe check out Appalachia State!
D is taking the SAT hoping to get her reading over 700 as her math was good so she can superscore. I’m just annoyed she is also taking the ACT next week too. She hasn’t done a lick of practice so what’s the point. But I guess if she’s the one to sit through 5 hours it’s on her.
Good news is she made the varsity cheer team captain! And what do I think about…oh that’s good for your college application. Ha
@whataboutcollege Welcome! You’ve come to the right place for info on merit-based money. There is an incredible amount of knowledge in the CC forum. Ask for help and you’ll get it. I’ve learned so much here.
There are three specific sites that people post regularly with regard to merit-aid. To get started, take a look…
@whataboutcollege …welcome! In addition to the links above there is also a whole string of posts on the Financial aid forum titled “Merit aid at East Coast Schools.”
DS should be finishing SAT II Bio M in few minutes. Still waiting for one grade, but he should be in safe zone for that. He may take SAT II Spanish in October and SAT in November if he becomes a NMSF. Now, he signed up for another science competition, inaugural International Medicine Olympiad @ UCSD from Aug 1-3. I am not sure it’s even legit :-). The organization also conducting two weeks camp (paid) before the tournament and his team hasn’t signed up for that. So the kids attending the camp may have an advantage. I have to burn 3 more days of PTO for that since it is Mon-Wed, not sure why they couldn’t do it over the weekend!
Picked up D after Chem and US History subject tests. Her only impression: “Meh.” She said the Chemistry felt harder than the 2 released tests she had practiced on but she didn’t think it was terrible. History she basically winged, she figured she’d throw it in since she took APUSH this year and it wasn’t full of obscure old poetry like the Literature test She’ll take Math 2 in October and hopefully that will be the end of all testing!
@snoozn My D doesn’t care about the gender ratio at RIT either, so long as the programs are cool. Most engineering programs are pretty lopsided, anyway. She’s also started to look at Northeastern as a likely/reasonable. I still wish she’d consider looking far afield enough to consider Tulane!
DS thinks he did well in SAT II Bio M. He wasn’t sure about 6 questions and checked after coming out and he has one wrong. I think you can have only 2 wrong to get 800. He already did 2 SAT IIs, worst case we can hide this score
Good news for D on the LoR front. On the last day of school she talked to her English teacher about the possibility of getting one from her. This is a teacher she’s had for two years and they have a really great relationship. Teacher said of course and that she would give D a copy. She also said D had better come and visit her next year since D won’t have a class with her. I’m thinking these are excellent signs for a glowing LoR!
Also good luck to SAT test takers today. I guess those on the east coast may actually be finished, so hope it went great. I will have to save up those good wishes as D takes the SAT on Monday. She hasn’t practiced much at all but says she feels pretty good about it and not under too much pressure. Hopefully her confidence is merited!
Like a few others mentioned (pages and pages ago), I don’t understand why SAT and ACT don’t offer summer testing in July or August. This would be so much better than sticking the tests in the middle of busy and demanding school schedules.
@thermom, D and I toured Northeastern on our wild spring break 7 colleges in 6 days trip. She really loved it and is a big fan of co-op. I thought it seemed like a great school, but not a good fit for D. It’s also #4 on the current list behind schools that aren’t a reach (which Northeastern is for her). Good luck in convincing your D to look at Tulane!
Just picked up D from SAT 2 test. She said chem was harder than practice test and US History was easier. Oh well, glad it’s over. I am rounding up all the SAT 2 books to return them to the library.
We will formally start our discussion of college list with DD tonight.
No summer homework allowed in this school district. Of course, when your year-over-year district student turnover rate hovers around 15–20% (much higher if you look at individual schools) and a large proportion of students are without access to the sort of resources that would support summer homework, it doesn’t really make sense.
Which reminds me that every time I hear people talk about summer homework, I wonder: What in the world is done with students new to a school?
Congrats to those done with today’s testing. It is happy-town around here!
@4beardolls We’re with you. Serious college list maintenance begins…well, maybe not tonight…but by early next week. We are going out with friends tonight to celebrate the end of the school year. I plan to slip them a few questions to ask D to see if they will elicit a different response than I would get.
