@dfbdfb We don’t have near that much turnover, but equity issues for course access by low income kids is a big issue in our district. As you said, a lot of kids don’t have the resources over summer to do well on homework.
Also, in the case of turnover, if you give a kid a textbook over the summer, there’s a significant chance of not getting the textbook back in the fall. In California, at least, you can’t require kids to purchase textbooks or other books or materials required for a class.
@2muchquan That must be why CB keeps sending emails to print the ticket a week before and 2 weeks before, etc. On the test day morning, the CB site could be down, internet could be down, power could be out due to storm at home but not at testing center, paper could be out, the ink could be out (this happened, and DS looked alien with washed off skin ton, at least the name/registration, etc, came out legible :)) but then the dog could eat the ticket.
@CA1543 If he cancels the test, all subject tests taken today get canceled. I think that is why some people prefer taking one test at a time in spite of added cost. It is cheaper to take multiple subject tests in a day than to spread out the tests.
@payn4ward – Thanks for that info above – my son called me from school after the math test bc he read the booklet and came across that rule - if you cancel 1, you cancel them all for that day. I had not known that - seems kind of harsh really. He really did zero practice for History so I told him fine to skip it - he took the AP exam - hopefully will get at least a 4. He’s a STEM kid not History by far so hopefully it’s not a big deal not to have SAT in US History! Did not want him to have to be forced to send all scores as some schools require or withhold something he’s not supposed to (though I am sure some students do that).
1 more week of school then 3 exams left - NY Regents & a math final. Then off to MIT, Northeastern & maybe another one before he goes on the FBLA trip.
Huge congrats to the students (and parents) done with exams & school!!
D took the physics test this morning. She said some questions were very odd and she definitely skipped some, but overall she got through it. She had a bit of a meltdown last night. Just cumulative stress, I think. I talked to her for awhile, just trying to be supportive and saying she didn’t have to be perfect. I even said she didn’t have to do the test this morning, she already has 2 subject tests, but she said it would be worse not to take it. So, she eventually got to bed just before midnight. Not ideal, but I am proud of her, no matter her score. Still one more week of school and then finals 13th-15th. Hope all of your kids testing today did great! Ugh, summer HW, yes there is a quite a bit for my D, unfortunately.
Our district started “outlawing” summer homework last year. With the exception of AP/DE classes. Which means it is possible both kids will have homework but since we still have 3 weeks of school yet, no info has been posted. I fully expect it in all of their AP classes, so 3 for S17 and 1 for S19.
@Ynotgo Cute stories!
There was a thread in parent forum about not-so-good teachers. One kid was reprimanded for saying age-inappropriate things to other kindergarteners. It turns out he/she talked about negative numbers!
@WhereIsMyKindle I was thinking DS is almost done with testing (yay!), but then you reminded me his 3 AP tests next year! I may also force him a Spanish Subject test next June if his chosen college has an FL requirement. nice mom >:)
Now, how to prod him into one more ACT next week.
He met several classmates today and they are all taking ACT next week.
I said “all your friends are taking it too!” Of course, he says “if all your friends are jumping off a cliff, you would jump off too!”
That is the parents’ line at our home - even if all your friends are doing stupid things, e.g. jumping off a cliff, please don’t jump off a cliff. [-(
@srk2017 Thank you! :x Hope his Bio turns out well too! Good luck to the competitions! So many!!
We do get summer readings in English and Social Studies. I better get those books from amazon, used copy. They need the books during the class, so I can’t get them from library. The homework could be done in a week or two for new students and I assume school gives extra time to them.
QOTD: check the Drafts. Often some part is saved there. Yes, happened multiple times.
@canypava – sorry to hear how last night went but hopefully she feels good, if tired, that she got through it. Pretty impressive to take that Physics test junior year - did she have AP Physics C? My DS only had AP Physics 1 so won’t take SAT Physics till October. Will do prep over summer. He says he enjoyed the AP Physics exam though. No idea yet how much summer homework there will be - imagine it’ll depend on whether he takes AP Lit or not - undecided on that. Doubt there’ll be much science or math. But he has a science project to complete & a paper with it that will be time-consuming.
@canypava – my son omitted four on the physics exam and that is not like him on standardized tests. He said there was absolutely no way he could eliminate even one choice, and then guess. He was still studying at 11:30 last night (after an early evening out with his friends). He intends to let the score stand and hope for the best.
My dd said she got too focused on answering the problems that she didn’t realize how much time had gone by. She said when the proctor called time she had 10 problems she didn’t answer. She said feels very confident about the ones she did answer.
She Is reserving judgment on other subject tests until Sept, NMSF announcements, and finalizing her list.
D took the SAT today and is just hoping for the confirming score needed for NM. She felt pretty good about it but wasn’t quite as well rested as she should have been so we’ll see.
As long as her subject test results turn out okay, she should be done with testing! Fingers crossed until June 15!
Now she really has to look at colleges. No more dancing around it. I’ll let her rest today, but tomorrow we get down to business!
Thank you @CA1543. Her HS only has Honors physics (well, I think a non-honors version as well). No AP at all for Physics. She did not want to take AP Bio or AP Chem, so H Phys was the class she chose. It is a class of both juniors and seniors. The class seemed to cover the main topics that the SAT 2 tests, but according to my D, the teacher (who was new this year), did not explain things very well. Anyway, the test is over now, so she can focus on her actual physics final, lol. I think only a couple of kids took the subject test (I guess this makes sense if some are seniors), so I’m sure the studying she did for it will help her out.
@CT1417, the curve does seem to be more generous (if that is the right wording) compared to some of the other subject tests, so that part is good at least! Yeah, I’m pretty sure even if my D doesn’t get a great score, she will not re-take. It’s going to be too hard to do better in Oct probably.
I agree that it will be too hard to retake the physics test in Oct. DS will take AP Physics C next year, but they will not get to the things he has not learned in H Phys until spring.
There were some heat/thermodynamics questions which H Phys did not cover but Chem/AP Chem covered them.
I don’t think many H Physics cover as much Optics (mirror and lenses) and Wave topics as in Subject test.
For most Science SAT subject tests you need to study some topics regardless of honors/AP/IB classes. DS always takes one practice test first and figure out the topics not covers in school.
My D had 3 SAT Subject tests today – Math 2, Chem, and Physics. I am trying to be unconcerned, but she stayed out late last night (even though I texted her with gentle reminders that she needed a good night’s sleep). And then this morning, she forgot her calculator and had to return home to get it, so she was late for the the first test. She did the same thing on the first AP test of the year… forgot her ID that time. I am trying really hard not to be all micro-manager-y and “I told you so”-ish, because she always seems to succeed anyway. But it could be so much smoother with a little more sleep and a little more organization!
Only one test left… ACT with writing. She already has a very nice ACT score, but her writing sub-score is not so nice. She’s sure she can improve that, now that she has a year of AP Lang behind her. Let’s hope she remembers a pencil for the test.
@canypava My daughter had a similar little breakdown when she was preparing for the January OLD SAT. She only had 2 weeks to prepare, as we decided last minutes to take it again. She was able to get over it quickly and did great on her test (of course we were snowed out, so she got one extra month, so it all worked out well). Kids are very resilient and they just need a little support from us to allow them take it easy from time to time. It is great seeing so many great kids on this board!!! :-j
Wow - praise you @Mommertons – I could definitely not be that calm! But my kid needs sleep and nagging to prepare bc he’s often overly focused on other stuff - pet projects, some computer science or techy webinar etc. I am glad he got the SAT Bio done after 9th grade - about 1/3 new material to self study (with private help though) and did very well but needs Physics for schools he is interested in. We are kinda winding down though at school so that feels good - got to do some gardening, thinking about a few summer trips and BBQs and of course Fathers Day festivities soon too!
