It won’t surprise me if son17 chooses a single room over a double/triple. He might like a set up that has a single bedroom with a shared common zone with some other bedrooms, but I don’t think he’s going to like the double option. He likes to socialize for a bit, but then wants his own quiet time. Having his own space might help recharge better. He claims he’s going to join some clubs/sports teams in college so I am sure he’ll meet plenty of people.
i think this is the sleep emoji I-)
Dorm question is an interesting one - D17 is introverted and needs recharge time. She also tends to be shy and in a single she might never meet anybody, even with the door open. Ah, plenty of time to think about that.
Her goal is to get applications in early, partly because merit scholarship consideration often requires it and partly because once her dance schedule really kicks in (early November), “free” time will be in short supply. We’ll see!
@payn4ward Loving those emojis! ^:)^
@eandesmom , My coworker’s nephew went to Western Washington U and realized it was too far away from home for him. After one year, he transferred to Bellevue College. I was very surprised at the time but now understand how each kid’s level of comfort varies dramatically.
D16 will be in a suite style dorm, two doubles with a shared bath. Gets cleaned once a week. The nice part is they have their own sink in their bedroom.
@mtrosemom I already bought a door stop! Great idea
@payn4ward you really like these emojis! :))
I don’t have a problem if D chooses a school that is somewhat close initially (although there goes the ‘no pants’ criteria right out the window, plus I’d like her to be a little out of her comfort zone). But, if she chooses a school somewhere far away, and later decides it’s ‘too far’…well, too bad, unless she comes up with a cheaper solution. It’s only 4 years. She’s a kid, she’ll get over it. :))
I see what you did there, @mamaedefamilia!
@2muchquan Purely unintentional! :))
@HiToWaMom it will be interesting. S doesn’t want to stay in town so that means right now 2 schools are definitely within his distance comfort level (1-2 hours away). I am not sure at the moment what else really is. After that we have one at a 4 hour drive, one at 9 and the rest…flying only and generally not all easy to get to.
I am not comfortable with an application list of 2 so…it will be interesting!
On suites: DD at Cornell had a suite that consisted of 1 double and three singles, with a suite door that required a key card to enter. Their bathroom was cleaned and stocked twice a week. I loved it so much, for her sake; a dining hall downstairs, both quiet and companionship as she needed, security! It’s so sad they had to move out, but two of the suite are doing semesters abroad next year and they couldn’t stay together and remain in that dorm .
(For any Cornell people who are wondering, it was in Hans Bethe, but that’s not available to freshmen.)
Most of dorms I have seen are too small to do much in the way of furniture. Bed and desk. You can loft beds usually but whatever you bring to put under them is yours anyways.
I never viewed my dorm room as small. But all the dorms I saw touring colleges with my son all seemed incredibly small to be. So I went back and walked through my dorm. Cinder block and brick walls so nothing was moved. They looked small to be. Just a matter of perspective I guess.
Son will be in 6 person suite next year. Three 2 person bedrooms, living room and bathroom with 3-4 sinks. Students are responsible for cleaning it all. Will be interesting to see how 6 guys manage to clean the bathroom. I know I won’t be using it when I visit. LOL
QOTD: Anyone know how to find out if a school admits to a specific major? Have not created a CA account, but maybe that’s a good way for those schools? I don’t seem to be able to find this information on school websites in all cases.
@262mom and any others looking at IL schools. You may want to check out this thread. UIUC was hanging on at the bottom of our list because they have one very interesting looking program D may be interested in, even though she previously poo-pooed our visit. It’s now coming off the list for good, and we’re not looking back. Very sad: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1896508-higher-education-in-illinois-is-dying-p1.html
QOTD: we have gotten that info more from visiting, but Cal Poly’s website emphatically stated that you apply and are accepted into a specific major within a specific school. None of the other schools S looked at did this. But then, Cal Poly is “impacted” and can limit it’s enrollment this way.
FWIW - D15 and her roomie lofted their beds this year so that they had more floor space. The desk and dresser fit under the bed. She liked the floor space, but hated having to make a lofted bed. It was really difficult. Next year no loft, but their room is a better, more usable shape next year. And she won the roommate lottery because they like each other and are rooming together next year!
Re: QOTD: I found the answer to that question on the specific department website for each school.
Fake-kid started his CA essay, and wanted me to get input from the group:
Question:
Are there any significant experiences you have had, or accomplishments you have realized, that have helped to define you as a person?
Answer:
I am a dynamic figure, often seen scaling walls and crushing ice. I have been known to remodel train stations on my lunch breaks, making them more efficient in the area of heat retention. I translate ethnic slurs for Cuban refugees, I write award-winning operas, I manage time efficiently. Occasionally, I tread water for three days in a row.
I woo women with my sensuous and godlike trombone playing, I can pilot bicycles up severe inclines with unflagging speed, and I cook Thirty-Minute Brownies in twenty minutes. I am an expert in stucco, a veteran in love, and an outlaw in Peru.
Using only a hoe and a large glass of water, I once single-handedly defended a small village in the Amazon Basin from a horde of ferocious army ants. I play bluegrass cello, I was scouted by the Mets. I am the subject of numerous documentaries. When I’m bored, I build large suspension bridges in my yard. I enjoy urban hang gliding. On Wednesdays, after school, I repair electrical appliances free of charge.
@2muchquan Clever!
As it’s Wednesday, feel free to send him my way to repair my electrical appliances! Does he install ceiling fans?
Lol @2muchquan, I love that, but how do these experiences define him as a person? I want more details and insight. Wouldn’t it be fun to really submit fake kid’s app and see if he got in? You’d have to do it to a school that has no app fee and allows self reporting for grades and test scores.
Digression of the Day:
@mdcmom‘s mention of Hans Bethe made me remember this story: my H and I were in grad school at Cornell and one winter evening I was driving to pick him up at the back of the chemistry building. It was slushy snow on the way in and I was following a bundled up person walking in the same direction. I proceeded slowly and didn’t get too close, in case I slid or something. The bundle entered the door where my H came out and he got in the car and said that was Hans Bethe! I freaked out and said thank goodness I wasn’t going to be a headline news story like “Grad student flattens Hans Bethe in parking lot”. Phew. Ok, back to our regularly scheduled discussion… Of which I don’t have much to add at the moment, but let me just say GOOD LUCK to all the kids taking ACT this Sat. Glad my DD doesn’t have to, but she will be studying for finals.
You are something else @2muchquan!
:))
@2muchquan ^:)^ :))
@greeny8 I hope your emoji is bowing down to my Google and copy/paste skills.
Regarding dorms.
Just had dinner with son17. I asked him if he would prefer a single room. double room, suite etc.
He said he would be OK with a double if he could live with his roommate for a little bit, but then if he didn’t like the roommate he could move into the single room Ha.
He said he likes the idea of a single because he has his own space that he is responsible for, and could get some peace and quiet if needed. He liked the idea of a dorm having a big hang out zone.
@2muchquan I thought you were really funny and witty for a moment.
@2muchquan I’ll give you credit for bringing it to our attention!
On a happy note today was D17 last day of school! Of course she’s out partying at a lake with friends, I don’t think I’ll see her much this summer!
I’m on pins and needles to see what her final Latin grade will be. Today her year to date is now a 90.28 She said she didn’t think she got an A on the fInal, and he hasn’t input the final grades yet. Ugh
