Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@green8 - I understand the frustration. Some of DS’s teachers curve or rounding, but one wouldn’t even add one point. DS needed barely made it and his classmate came up 1 point short (for entire semester) and ended up with a B+ which B for GPA purposes!

My son who graduated last year was always good for high As. Never left any doubt. My daughter aims for the bottom of the A range. Same GPA results but much different way of getting there. She never seems to sweat it though.

D got her license today. As far as premium goes, it jumped 50%. After applying the good student discount, still a 35% jump. :frowning: :((

Congrats @whataboutcollege you have a gopher in your house. D gopher this, gopher that.

@srk2017 Why a B+ is B for GPA purpose?

At my D17’s HS, it the same- no difference in GPA pts

Son17 is just getting some grades updated on our portal. He is king of the A- usually. This semester though he has a few As but then offset them with a B+ and a B, ha. We have an honor roll at our school where for the highest list you must have 4.33W to make it or above, or nothing less than A- in all classes. He usually makes it by the skin of his teeth. Right now he is at something like 4.37 :), just barely enough to sneak in as usual. So predictable.

His 2 hard classes for him have been Honors Alg 2 and Honors Physics. He needs to put in more of an effort to get the higher grade, but he doesn’t love those classes so barely studies. The classes he loves he has great grades, such as economics and business law.

@whataboutcollege - IT is teacher’s choice to have + or - grades, as per district policies they don’t differentiate. So B+ or B- are still consider B i.e. have 3.0 value. So some teachers only give letter grades only i.e. A,B,C,D no A- or A+. for some reason some have different cutoffs for A. Spanish teacher gives A for 95, English teacher 93 for A. Some teachers curve and some don’t. Some bump grades for their favorite students. So it is all over the place (like everything else) :slight_smile:

D’s school GPA calculation is a bit complex. Letter+ (5+) is .5 higher than the Letter (0+) itself. Eg. A+ (95+) is 4.5; A (90+) is 4.0; B+ (85+) is 3.5; B (80+) is 3.0, etc. This GPA is considered unweighted. Then honor adds 0.5, AP adds 1.0, and this GPA is considered weighted. Not sure how each college recalculate their own version of the GPA based on this? D was hoping to get A+s on her doubled down science classes (6 credits each). But it doesn’t seem going to happen now… I think she worked pretty hard on these classes, so she is doing better than I expected already :x. If colleges collapse A+s and As into the same bucket, it doesn’t really matter whether she get a 96 or a 94 right?

Before heading to dorms this summer, D will go to hotels first. She loaded up on chips, veg straws and other snacks at Trader Joe. Going to a girl leadership conference and as one of the leaders of the group, she wants to make sure her room is “party central”, and hotel gift shop is too expensive, she says.

From what I’ve seen, but all colleges are different, and include different classes (usually core only), colleges tend to recalculate in the way @srk2017 describes, with possible bumps only for H and AP/DE/IB classes.

I believe most colleges go by the GPA not letter grades.

The only issue is if colleges recalc GPAs, it will be hard to interpret the charts/historical data (GPAs) in Naviance. As I believe the GPAs there are school calculated unweighted GPAs.

It appears I may be wrong on colleges recalculating GPA. DS has few A-s and couple of A+s.

ermagerd y’all, 105 new posts in one day? 8-}

D17 has had her license since a few days after she turned 16, has been driving her sister and herself to school every day this year. Has already backed int her friend’s brand new ford fusion and caused 3k in damage to his car-he thought he’d be funny by stopping directly behind her in the parking lot, she didn’t see that he was there (because she didn’t wait for her backup camera to come on before throwing it into reverse), and backed into him last fall.

No damage to her car, which is a freaking 5200 lb tank (I insisted on the tank, circa 2008). I told her she was supposed to use the tank defensively, not offensively, and that the 3k would come out of her wedding budget someday.

No dorm talk at all. She could not care less, other than wanting her own bedroom and bathroom, which she knows won’t happen freshman year.

Holy schneikes! I’m hoping D17 gets a few good EA admits and can be done. Does anyone know if you find out how much money (if any) they give you when you find out if they got in EA?

That’s sweet! I agree a doorstop is a good idea. I used to use a shoe, and it always ended up orphaned out in the hallway.

@whataboutcollege our insurance jumped a HUGE amount. We’re excellent drivers (no tickets or accidents) so we were aghast at the cost for 1 girl with good grades. We ended up switching from USAA to geico because USAA was really sticking it to us on the price. Daughter #2 just finished the classroom part of driver’s ed this week and gets her license in Nov. I shudder to think of how expensive she’ll be, but it’s only for a year and then we can take D17 and turn her into an occasional driver.

I have to read another 50 pages of William Gibson’s “Pattern Recognition” for class tomorrow. I am so tired. At least my cold is going away-no more runny nose, only feels like a brick is sitting on my chest, and I only needed a few advil today. I tried to do too much today, though, and now I’m feeling wiped out. Younger D is grumpy that I’m not making dinner, and I’m like, a little sympathy please, princess.

I got the Rugg’s guide today and I’m not sure I trust it. Anyone else have experience with this book?

What was the QoTD? Specific major? That’s something she should know-she can ask during the visits this summer. She’d be very peeved if she had to take 2 years of non-specific stuff.

@2muchquan Your fake kid post cracked me up. :))

Thanks for all of the replies on the # of schools to apply to. Based on the replies on # of schools applying to, I think my son is okay. He has 14 schools on the list with 2 barely hanging on so really at 12 at the moment. 4 safety/ 4 target / and 4 reach. He will apply to 3 as EA and the rest RD. 10 are common app; 2 are direct school apps. He can decide from there. I was worried that he doesn’t have enough safety/ target but the GC and my son have gone over the list many times and she feels the list is solid. With the acceptance rates at schools, it makes me nervous because you read so many stories of highly qualified students not getting accepted to schools that you just want to make sure they are applying to the right schools.

@snoozn 28 apps?? That is painful.

@itsgettingreal17 My son hasn’t mentioned any gifts he would like but I am thinking of a family vacation that he would really enjoy. I have to give it some thought and see if he’s interested. Not much dorm talk going on here. My son has said two things which are that he wants to buy a bed like the one he has for his dorm and he wants a refrigerator with a freezer and a microwave. He thinks with a bed and refrigerator/ freezer/ microwave he’s all set. Took him 2 minutes to share that with me and never mentioned the dorms again. I told him the bed was not possible but I’m not sure he heard me.

@STEM2017 I agree corridor style works really for encouraging socializing during the freshman year. More exposure to many more kids that a suite.

Please excuse my serial posts. I read last night and parts of today without posting and I’d like to catch up.

@paveyourpath As long as your ds is happy with his 4 “safeties” then he’s good :slight_smile:

Older dd (dd13) wanted a trip with her bestest friend, so we went to WDW (we own DVC). We had a small party at home with a bounce house (shout out to someone upthread who mentioned kiddie parties) that was greatly enjoyed by her theatre and chorus friends.

D isn’t sure if she wants a party. Her older sister will be graduating college at the same time, and we will have a party for her. I told D I’d like to have a party at least for me, because it will mark my “graduation” from homeschooling!

We bought a fridge with a separate (outside door) freezer for dd13 her sophomore year. She has multiple food allergies and likes to keep safe food on hand in case the dining hall does not suit. D could take that fridge with her if she goes to a school that allows that type of fridge or doesn’t supply their own fridge.

I hope your cold continues to improve @MotherOfDragons

Congras to those kids who are finishing up this week!
