Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

ACT test on Saturday and then we’re done. He has Florida Boys State, later this month, and will be staying for a week in a dorm on FSU’s campus. In July, he has a cross-country camp at Berry College in Georgia (he gets to run up and down mountains! we don’t have those in Florida…) and staying at their student dorms. The campus is gorgeous, and with 27,000 acres it’s the largest contiguous campus in the world.

On PE: Both of my kids avoided it throughout HS, as the Cambridge AICE Diploma doesn’t require it. I wouldn’t be surprised if both thought that was one of the best part of being in the AICE program…

This will be the 3rd summer D17 has volunteered at a local retirement community/rehab facility. He’s one of the few volunteers that work with the memory unit (something I don’t think I could handle at his age). The last two summers, he also helped put on a play for the residents, last year he played the role of the Beast in Beauty and the Beast. I LOL so hard, sitting the back and watching my highly sensitive introvert son, just nail the role. I think some of the residents thought I was choking… =))

@eandesmom Yup, S17 too. just pull down and pants come off. amazing to see it first time. :))
I wait for sale on Boden and buy 3 pairs at once. I used to shop mini boden but boys are grown.

For nice button-down shirts, I get slim-fit ones on sale from outlet (Brooks brothers, etc) still expensive but they last forever.

I haven’t even begun to think about what my D needs for three weeks at Smith. I’m too stressed out about just plopping her on an airplane and sending her off by herself. Maybe I could distract myself by making a packing list.

@payn4ward I LOVED mini boden! I haven’t looked there for boys clothes in a long time though as the boys kind of “outgrew” their styles, esp S17. I used to get a lot from them. I should look again though as style wise I think it’s a good fit for S19 and sale is ideal.

I get most of S19’s jeans from Hollister on clearance for $20 each though and then at PacSun or Zumiez I will do a 2 for $60 combo for S17.

I go out for a day of hanging out with my kid and everyone has learned how to put everything in bold!

***Very Cool ***

@srk2017 and all of you… I am curious - what other colleges are know for grade deflation?

D is pro at shopping and has an eye on deals. She recently walked out of Talbots with a full bag of clothing for $80.

@2muchquan, I was waiting for you to post those prompts

Do you think answering prompt 6 put you in disadvantage? D might not even apply (not on the list), but said last year one girl in her school did prompt 6 very nicely and still got rejected. She is going to Swarthmore.

@what???!! I only looked @ Ivies and couple of top ranked. I heard Univ of Chicago, Princeton, Cornell, MIT and Johns Hopkins have grade deflation.

Take a day for a college visit and come back buried by 200+ posts in this thread. Thanks everybody.

@saillakeerie …where did you go?

University of Kentucky.

^ Report please?

I am going on vacation in a couple of weeks for two weeks and will not have internet for at least a week. I am petrified already that I’ll never catch up!!!

@mtrosemom It’s crazy. I log in and have 100+ notifications.

I tried but could not talk D into applying for those 6 week camps, she wanted to stay home with friends. She is doing a 1 week camp and will only bring a small bag.

We like UChicago, but they don’t have much in the engineering category.

@dfbdfb, Thanks for your perspective on UCF. Which nmsf free ride/tuition schools have better reputations among academicians?

Ha! @SincererLove I think there are a lot of applicants who responded to prompts #1-5 and didn’t get into UChicago.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek Wow. You need to do like I did and turn those suckers off!

@Mom2aphysicsgeek @2muchquan Yup, no yellow star bookmark on this thread. I KNOW there will be updates!

I spent some time “requesting information” and “joining mailing list” of the colleges in “my” current school list.
That was much more painful than I expected.
The link to the form was not prominently featured in Admissions website. Maybe they do not want to add you to their mailing list.
I resorted to searching above quoted words in the school website. If that did not work, google “school name” “request info” which magically lead to the form that was nowhere on the Admissions webpage.

Interview attire: Does it make a difference if it’s scheduled on campus right after a tour? I mean, I’m trying to imagine dressing up for an interview and then walking across a 90-degree campus for two hours, and expecting to look even vaguely elegant.

Grade deflation: Another, by reputation, is Wellesley. No idea if it’s true of not, though.

@eandesmom: Yeah, I have a sister whose children are pretty much the growth-curve opposite of mine. We joke that it had to be so, since otherwise we’d unbalance the earth and the western hemisphere would tip over.

@nw2this: Well, like I said, UCF’s honors college does have a good reputation, so there’s that. But scanning the list, with the caveat that I don’t really know all of them (especially the smaller ones), I think my colleagues would react highly positively to any state flagship or near-flagship, any even regionally-known LAC, and those widely known for research programs such as Drexel and Baylor. There’s probably none of them academics would react particularly negatively too, however, unless it’s having accreditation issues or somesuch, and in some cases schools like Liberty, where there are reasonable issues with the teaching methods and underlying assumptions involved (e.g., creationism-oriented approaches simply don’t work with modern study in the biosciences, at all).

Requesting info: I know, right? You’d think every school out there would have a request info link on the front page, in fact. (Of course, there are some schools that don’t take requests for information. It’d be nice to have that stated outright, too, so that one doesn’t spend half of forever trying to find the nonexistent link.)
