Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@SincererLove OK I do remind.

And we do discuss if he needs any special clothes or equipment. Although I’m not too obsessive of it. He asked if he needed fancy clothes for his sister graduation, I suggested his black jeans & nice button down shirt. He brought his tux pants but no fancy shoes. It was a little strange pairing tux pants with sneakers. But wasn’t a big deal. I was probably the only person that noticed.

Pokemon- d18 is already Level 5 and spent all weekend walking around the neighborhood catching stuff. Hilarious! She’s at camp now and I don’t know if they will have time to pursue it.

D17 broke her phone the first day of camp so missed the whole thing.

Packing- they’ve been doing their own packing for years, they’re super good at it. Every now and then I have to drop ship them something from Amazon, but it’s rare. We do a lot of trips, so they’ve had a lot of practice.

@mdcmom, when we first submitted FAFSA it took a few days to process, but when we linked our tax return it was much faster. Hopefully it will be ok.

Maybe follow up with the college sometime mid week to make sure all is well.

Don’t forget to watch Olympic Women’s Gymnastics Trials. 7:30 CST.

Carry on.

Oh great. I guess we have the D24 playing Pokemon go now. I told her not by the street! We don’t have big trees.

Packing: When we go on family trips I pack for the younger ones. D15 packs her own stuff and has lists for everything.

Ok…please tell me that I am not the only one who had to look more than once in order to understand that @mommdc and @mdcmom were 2 different people!

Yes, sorry, it was not intentional, I promise!

QOTD
My kids do their own packing, but there was that time a few years back when DD’s entire bag got left behind on a week away to the grandparents’ 8 hours away. Thank goodness for thrift stores :slight_smile: .

Confusing Names
Yeah, mommdc and I joined around the same time and are on a lot of the same forums so it’s pretty confusing. I was hoping my new avatar would help though :wink:

and yes, I’ll be following up tomorrow because in doing the verification I discovered that I messed up the taxes (I think). Gave ourselves more taxable income than we actually had. It’s the clergy allowance which is always incredibly confusing and I’m not so concerned about the FA aid but if the verification gets kicked back b/c the numbers don’t match up, that will be incredibly bad timing :(( .

I was getting ready to close the AoPS page that I had left open and scrolled through the Jam sessions. I thought I would post these since CMU was just being discussed. I figured at least one person on here would be applying to MIT, too. :wink:

Central Michigan University and Mississippi Institute of Tectiles?

PokemonGO, there really is no escaping it…I hope it burns about by September. X_X

It’s taken over the official UF twitter account (that and SEC’s media days, Football is still KING!); the official UF twitter account even started a PokemonGO hastag #PokemonUF (if you catch a Totodile, you get a retweet! what the $%^&* is a Totodile? 1/2 Gator, have Toto the dog? or is it just a Gator eating a dog?). My DD14, who’s back for the summer, drove up to Gainesville for the weekend, and the kids where walking all over campus with their phones out playing the game.

@itsgettingreal17

No one is arguing whether or not the University of Tulsa is a fit for your child.

Just making clarification to the facts you state about no honors program – there is – and whether the campus is “closed” because of gates – it isn’t.

We are all good and I wish you the very best!!

Very late to the party, but I’ll introduce myself anyway …

I’m mom to a DS who just transferred from a New England public university to a NESCAC school after his freshman year. Long, complicated, dramatic process and I hope he’ll feel happy and settled.

My DD is HS class of 2017. She’s a strong and talented student with excellent test scores (thanks to CC advice) and an interest in social justice, although she has no idea yet what she’ll major in. We’re struggling with defining a college list right now. She’s reaching for a few Ivies, some NESCACs and some other highly rated schools in the Northeast (D.C. to Maine). I’m simultaneously working on understanding affordability, and trying to get strong merit aid schools in the mix. DD really doesn’t know what she’s looking for, but that doesn’t stop her from having strong opinions! First we nixed some schools (UPenn, GW, Columbia, BU) because she didn’t want to be right in the center of a big city. Then she visited NYU and loved it (or so she thinks) and so now wants to put the city schools back on. I added the “or so she thinks” parenthetical because (i) I know that she’s introverted and loves quiet spaces in nature, (ii) she can sometimes be oblivious to her surroundings (scary for inner city), (iii) she moves at an unhurried pace that is decidedly atypical in NYC and most large Northeastern cities, and (iv) after a busy morning tour at NYU she asked me to treat for a taxi because she didn’t feel like doing the subway! She dismissed Haverford because it was “too small” at 1100 students, but then fell in love with Swarthmore which has only 400 more students. I’m hoping to get through this process with my sanity and our relationship intact, and without bankrupting the family finances. CC has been a great place for advice and solace!

stress after spending a week with my H brother and family and his sister and family, my stress level is through the roof. Kids not listening, respecting, behaving, no consequences, it drove my H and I up a wall. Just one example of too many…waiting at a restaurant for a table for 13 ppl. 12 yo girl TELLS her dad she is leaving to walk around the town to shop. He says no, she leaves, by herself in a strange town. He calls her 10 times and she would answer and hang up. Then she texts ‘stop calling me’. The spouse leaves to find her and she eventually comes back and proceeds to yell at the dad for god knows what. Then after dinner she gets ice cream! What?

@2muchquan since we were away and had little wifi, our data was running dangerously low so I looked at AT&T and they have a promotion for unlimited data if you get direct tv. And it’s cheaper than my current plan! So I switched but I won’t get the direct tv and they will switch me back to my old plan after two months. why not!

Ok, still 7 pages behind…

Refusing to Google PokemonGO

Pokeman Go - is getting hot in our town though thankfully bit yet in our house!! What is he last game or virtual reality experience that has had such a fast and board impact? Minecraft?? Candy Crush? What is the huge appeal/addition to Pokeman Go about?

@deborahb I don’t know why I’m even responding, but I merely stated my opinion that the honors program isn’t much of one. That’s an opinion and was never stated as fact. And it is a fact that most of the campus is gated. That is not common and I find it off-putting. That’s an opinion. Good luck to you.

And to the poster that asked for details, I’ll PM you.

@2muchquan - Actually DS17 will be applying to Central Michigan University. Mostly because that’s where my husband and I got our UG and so DS17 would get instate tuition plus some merit aid. My dad still lives up there so there is that too. But mostly we are using it as a safety.

@greeny8 Yikes! Sorry for a stressful vacation. I cannot imagine. I would have been biting my tongue and my dh and Inwould have been kicking each other under the table!
