Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

7/11 - Happy Free Slurpy Day

@busynapping, wow, my S voluntarily going to a store (that does not sell video games) might be something, is your S at least carrying some bags?

My stepson was playing the Pokemon trading card game almost 20 years ago, so no wonder these 20-30 yr olds are all playing Pokemon Go.

Over the years my other kids have all played the Pokemon card game and various video games for Gameboy, DS, Gamecube, Wii.

I think the popularity also has to do with the fact that it is on the iTunes platform.

My son has an android phone, but D24 plays it on the ipod.

Just got off the phone with the FA office. Turns out the verification form that they told me (at the beginning of July) to email directly to one of their officers was still sitting in her inbox. Thankfully I happened to get that officer when I called so she found it quickly and updated it.

But the FA awards are still 4-6 weeks away. :(( Which actually runs into the beginning of the school year, yikes.

So we have to figure out a plan. Taking lots of deep breaths here!

Son17 has a busy week. He might be tired be end of week. Supposed to be pretty warm all week.

Monday- soccer game
Tuesday- 2 Lax games
Weds- 2 lax games, soccer game
Thursday, 1 or 2 lax games, and 1 lax pratice
Friday- college tour
Saturday- 3 Lax games
Sunday- 2 Lax games

I wish I had the energy to do all that. I-)

@mdcmom OK I’m confused, I suppose I should go back and read your back posts. I’m sure you must explain it. Why are you submitting FA reports now? Is this for something your teen is doing this fall?

Our FA reports were submitted the first week of May; it’s only now that we’re dealing with verification forms that I sure wish they’d sent us in, say, June, so that there’d be a chance of having it done before DD’s semester abroad money is due!

@mdcmom, I’m confused too.

I thought you were talking about verifying income by using the DRT on the FAFSA to link tax return to FAFSA.

But it seems the college had their own verification form to fill out.

Is your D doing a semester of study abroad in the fall instead of a regular semester at her uni? Usually financial aid doesn’t disburse until 10 days before the term starts, so when is the money for study abroad due?

Does her normal financial aid cover the study abroad expenses? Then why can’t they wait until the aid disburses?

Welcome @SoccerMomGenie , when I see NESCAC, my brain automatically turns it into “Nescafe”. I have no idea what NESCAC is :).

I totally agree. If they could just stay off of the roads and the highways! ’

Yep, D`18’s boyfriend is a giant (literally, he’s huge, and in our tall family that’s saying something, and he’s not done growing yet!) lacross-playing pokemon go player-the two of them spent six hours over the weekend before she left for camp hunting them together all over the neighborhood.

I’ve been trying to find D17’s AP number for 2016 (as they evidently change each year, which of course makes perfect nonsense), and I can’t find it on her account from College Board. Because you’d think that’s where it would be, but no.

I’m trying to send in the request for the FRQ and the multiple choice rescore forms, and I just can’t find her number. It says it came with her packet of stuff when she registered and that’s where I can find it, but we registered online through the school with the totalregistration website, and that’s got nothing on it about AP numbers. Grrrr.

Interestingly, the totalregistration website says I can’t cancel D18’s AP compsci score without the school’s approval. Lol we’ll see about that. I’m doing that directly through the Collegeboard, and I’d like to see the school try and tell me I can’t.

I’m on one of my fast days-it turns me into a rampaging meanie. I’m wearing my “I’m Sorry For What I Said When I Was Hungry” shirt so people know to give me a wide berth. ;).

@MotherOfDragons the AP number was on the packet when you D actually filled out the forms (name, address, school code, yadda yadda yadda) at school, not at registration time (my d used totalregistration this year too). The packet had barcode stickers identifying the student that s/he would put on each exam’s answer sheets. There was rip-out section, kinda like a bookmark, for the student to place a sticker on so that they would remember their number. That paper is blue and white with “Your AP Number” at the top.

Maybe that info will jog her memory

@MotherOfDragons that’s interesting on the score cancellation. I had planned to do it through the college board site but figured I have lots of time. Is there a reason you need to cancel now?

@WhereIsMyKindle I’ll have to go dig around in her study to see if I can find that paperwork-she may not have saved it. Ugh. She may, however, have taken a picture of it. Which is in her phone. Which is broken. D’oh.

@eandesmom there is no hurry, I just have time here with only two classes. In August everything fires back up again and I’ve got 4 classes, they have school, etc etc. I figured I’d knock as much “to-do” stuff out now as I can before our world goes crazy busy again.

QOTD: Yeah, D18 is there-I got a dramatic text last night that she and her new roommate at camp loathe each other and oh the humanity. I think it is a rite of passage to have at least one bad roommate somewhere along the line.

Eeks you all. I was gone for two weeks with really little internet, and I came back to about 1500 new posts. I think I will catch up at my leisure and jump in where you are now.

@MotherOfDragons Yeah dig around in D’s backpack if she doesn’t mind, the AP booklet might be in there.

I think my D kept all of hers.

@MotherOfDragons let me know how the cancellation process goes. We won’t send scores till after acceptance and next years AP results. I’m not sure how meaningful non credit scores are to show on the score report but had planned to cancel as applicable. However if it requires some number from this years booklet…it will be safe to say S17 burned it in the firepit with the rest of the years schoolwork (annual ritual).

Pokémon: My daughter says she hasn’t seen any kids in Germany where she is playing it. She isn’t playing either. Son who is a counselor at a computer camp in Atlanta says the campers are playing it but he is not. He probably doesn’t have time though I doubt he would anyway.

I did see several people playing it while out at lunch. One guy appeared to be using two phones.

^I don’t think it has been released in Europe yet

@Mom2aphysicsgeek, the post by @nw2this reminded me of a STEM DoD scholarship program my D is looking into. I figured there must surely be something similar with language and came across this: http://borenawards.org/boren_scholarship/basics.html
Maybe you already know about it, but I figured I mention it just in case.

And in case anyone is wondering about the STEM scholarship: https://smart.asee.org/

@saillakeerie …D is home from Germany! Her flight from Newark got delayed and she did not leave until 1 am, got home (in the door) near 5 am. She had an amazing time, was with a fantastic family.

They rode the city bus into school every morning, had class until 1 and then she and her host sister walked to her grandma’s house every day for lunch. Grandma had a fresh hot meal cooked every afternoon. Grandma was on to my picky little eater in a hot minute lol! On the second day she nicely grabbed Ds hand and said in German " you WILL try everything at least once!" LOL!! That was the rule here in our home for awhile when she was little and I will admit I just gave up the good fight.

They spent their afternoons biking, hiking to an abandoned castle, playing with the family puppies and then D also played with the younger sister and spent time talking to the great-grandma who lived nearby. They did an overnight trip to Bonn and Cologne, saw the Gutenberg press and museum, took a cruise down the Rhine and met the local officials (the Burgermeister?) and had their picture in the paper. She said she spoke German entirely at home and at most times during school except for when her group was together working on a project.

She is home now and I think finally over her jet lag. She is eager to dig into at least a few apps before we leave again next week on vacation. Found out today her high school office was closed for transcripts but they have a central location where you can drop in and print up transcripts…we were in and out with 8 copies of official transcripts in less than 10 minutes. Very nice!

S is playing Pokemom Go. It is great in my POV. He is taking the dog for walk every day and catching Pokemon around the neighborhood. He even said it was a win-win for him and the dog!. D15, who is in Cleveland for an internship and on a very tight budget is playing too. She is very happy that it is free and fun.
