@mtrosemom I wish I could get S to consider UNR, I think it has a lot of what he wants but he is balking at the word “Nevada”. LOL! Price is right though for sure. We will see how his class goes at the end of the month, I suspect we may have list refining that occurs post class.
I am so impressed with D’s main essay! Minimal editing required. And she’s off working on her short answers for Pitt now. We are both feeling much better about the “summer of essays.”
@MotherOfDragons Here were our transcript problems: so D’s transcript has short names for everything. The name for one course that was two semesters should be listed 2x but instead one semester has a strange name that is not correct. The grade is right though. Then the diploma listed is not right. Hopefully they correct it tomorrow. I want to submit all transcripts this week.
Also found out the college office is otherwise closed until Aug 1 (only processing transcript requests) and we need them to sign off on D’s college math class for next year. I’m being cheap in not wanting to submit an official AP score report, but may have to do that to make sure she gets the section she wants.
We finally have a list!!!
I finally became so frustrated that I threatened that he could not spend any more time teaching himself math for his programming research until he finished the list! An odd threat, I realize. I almost wish he would go outside and look for Pokemen. He reported that several of his friends were down at the beach trying to capture Pokemen. (I sense that Pokemen is not the plural of Pokemon.)
List has 15 schools, one SCEA TBD, several state schools with EA, and then round 2 with RD after the SCEA decision is returned. If by some strike of lightening the SCEA is a yes, RD list will be trimmed. Two proprietary apps, one coalition app, and the rest are CA, according to his spreadsheet.
Spreadsheet requires expansion to include info about interviews, and probably other categories!
Just happy to finally have his head in the game, even if threats were needed.
Well, we had a change in plans yesterday. My younger 3 are all spontaneously involved in a 2 week drama camp. our college reprieve is going to bite the dust today. Since it is just Dd and I during the day for the next 2 weeks, finalizing her list, finishing my counselor letter, creating a visit schedule, and encouraging her to get her essays done in a quiet, no distraction household is the goal.
Congrats @CT1417 on the list!
@Mom2aphysicsgeek I’m jealous of your next 2 weeks.
I am slowly coming under the realization that D17 is simply accepting the list I put together. She’s got 3 school-specific apps started (5 total) but her CA essay is behind schedule. Not too worried about that if she is good with the list, pending 5 more school visits, 3 in July. About 10-11 CA, no Coalition.
One school wants an actual résumé. So D is working on that. Something I thought we could get away without, but actually will be great for interviews if needed.
Just got back from a visit to Rochester Institute of Technology, looking at the NTID (National Technical Institute for the Deaf BS program, for ASL Interpreters, DD is not deaf), and it was pretty exciting! They offer a standout experience for Interpreting degree. DD liked it a lot and it is now her number one school! (Has only seen a few others, however Definitely an unusual school in that they have significant engineering school but also college of “Imaging arts and sciences”, also the large deaf and hard of hearing population so many of the “regular” RIT students take ASL to interact with deaf community better. Anyway, I am going to post a college visit report on CC if anyone is interested.
SO glad now that we made DD sit through some tutoring and retake the ACT so her score will really help her chances of admission and hopefully scholarships. Second child, and she was never really super excited about college searches like the first, but now she has her head in the game, so that is a relief! She has submitted one app so far ( pretty easy one), not finished her common app yet ( pretty much done except for dreaded essay), and her high school transcripts are not going to be available for a few more weeks…no worries, there is still time, it will come together…thankful for the progress made in the past few weeks! Still has to plan some more visits. She wants to get a job (wants more spending money I guess) but Dad and I told her she has to get her college apps and visits done first, so that is a motivating factor for her!
Question for the homeschoolers on this thread: Does the Common Application require that the guidance counselor upload a counselor letter?
The school my son will be applying ED to requires two teacher rec’s, but the school does not have the requirement for a guidance counselor rec listed in its checklist of items required of the applicant. Out of all the paperwork I have to submit as the guidance counselor, I find the counselor letter the most difficult to write. It would be great if the Common App does not require it, and I could avoid writing it this time around.
It does. I would not skip the opportunity to describe the strengths of your student. It may be hard to write, but it is definitely important.
ETA: Dumb question…isnt your Ds auto admit if he has already been recruited? Maybe just write about he has a great balance between adademic and athletic pursuits!
@2kidsinky …sounds like a fantastic visit! Isn’t it nice when it clicks with them and they finally get on board and get excited?
@Mom2aphysicsgeek ACK! I was hoping I could call it a day since all of the other docs are complete. #-o
@Mom2aphysicsgeek Yes, he has the coach’s full support. I submitted all the other docs for the pre-read with admissions for July 1st, and my son received the official positive pre-read results from admissions last week.
He has been working on his essays and wants to get the application submitted as soon as the Common Application officially opens (which I think is August 1st, is that right?)
I don’t want my son to be waiting on me to get my ducks in a row, so I need to get going on this.
@2kidsinky Great visit! So glad it has gone to number one for your DD. I live 15-20 minutes form the school, so if I can help you in any way, just let me know.
Saw some older neighbors playing Etch-A-Sketch GO last night…
Got a quick response from D’s hs so there are definitely folks around, just not everyone. The diploma type won’t get updated until the other counselor come back and process AP scores and state testing so we won’t be submitting any transcripts until around August 1. Not a big deal. The different codes for Psych is intentional. I’m waiting for an explanation as to why. They also let me know that her community college classes will not even show up on her hs transcript like a DE so we’ll have to eventually submit a transcript from the cc.
D is done with her Pitt short answers. On track to submit that on Thursday, I think. Working on Ole Miss and UDel essays this week as well. If she’s really ambitious, maybe also UKy.
QOTD: AP Scholar awards. Seems to me like marketing fluff from the CB, maybe wanting to make mo’ money. Is it worth mentioning on CA? Is there a spot on the CA for scores, making it all redundant?
@2kidsinky and @jeepgirl, I would love to hear more about RIT! It’s on S17’s list for Mechanical Engineering but it’s a 6.5+ hour drive for us. I made that drive twice for D15 to visit URoch and am not eager to make again unless he is serious about the school and it feels like a good fit.
Any and all observations about the campus, surrounding area, condition of buildings, food, merit opportunities, internships, etc. would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!
@2muchquan – I will caveat my response by saying I have not looked at CA in a couple of years, but there used to be a section for National Awards. I assume that AP Scholar, NMSF, etc could go there, as I don’t know how many Intel Scholars there are out there filing the CA.
I also thought there was a spot to self-report AP scores.
QOTD: I have wondered the same thing. If you report your AP scores elsewhere on the application, then there’s really no new information added by reporting the AP Scholar awards (unless it is one of the state awards that just go to the one male and one female with the highest scores on the most tests in that state, but seems likely that those usually go to graduating seniors, post college applications).
Still, I have read (somewhere) that AP awards are appropriate to list on common app under “honors and awards.” My guess is that enough people list them that doing so doesn’t hurt but that it probably also doesn’t help that much either, since it’s really redundant information if you already reported individual AP scores. I guess it shows that there aren’t a bunch of low, unreported scores pulling down the average? Curious to know what others think about this.
@CT1417, I had to threaten my D15 with “no reading for fun until you do…” whatever she had to do, so I get the weird threats.
