Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@2muchquan …ahh, so thankful for your Way Back Machine! Yes, it does look like they have changed things. ugh.

On a lighter note, just brought in the mail and D got a letter from Clemson offering “Provisional acceptance” based on the ACT scores she sent. It’s a good start! We didn’t even know they did that so it brought a smile to her face (as she is sitting here entering all of her transcript info into an app portal!)

@curiositycat333 has your S considered Univ. Nevada Reno? (from your post #8650). The area around Reno has wilderness, skiing, hiking, biking, and Lake Tahoe. The U has a good engineering dept. and a marching band. A friends D is there and plays in the band. It is ranked in the top 200 national universities. Just a thought.

A pox on Pokemon Go! I am glad my D is getting out and exercising, but it’s like she is training for a marathon. She just started a job and is taking a class over the summer and does not need something else to obsess over.

That, and she went yellow, were did I go wrong?

@carachel2, but it says “We will use the highest of the SAT superscore or the ACT composite score in reviewing your application for admission”, so for merit consideration I would still send all of your D’s ACT scores.

@CaucAsianDad … Just read an article about Pokemon Go that cautions against signing in with your google account. I don’t know if this is true or not but the article says it gives Go access to your whole google drive??

Can anyone verify if this is true or not?

@mommdc That’s a good point. Nice catch. I couldn’t find anything on the scholarships pages that said anything about superscoring, but who knows?

I wouldn’t ask too many questions. Send it all and hope for the best is my humble opinion.

@carachel2, good grief, I’m thinking more and more that this Pokemon Go business is bad news.

@carachel2 yes I was just reading that article. The iOS version gives full access to your whole Google drive, contacts, etc.

Re: UKy scholarships: They seemed to have increased the score for the tip scholarships. Anyone have a screenshot or info about the required scores from last year? I wonder how they came up with the new scores. Someone upthread says they converted new SAT scores to the equivalent scores from last year. Can anyone confirm. D is fine, but just curious.

Applications: My daughter would have had her first application in (to the University of Kansas) a week ago, but last week was the annual unpaid furlough week required vacation for the school district here, so we couldn’t get an up-to-date transcript until today. (There was a course missing, and hadn’t been fixed yet on the most recent copy we had.) Now we have it, though, so the first application is in!

Fun addendum: She’d started the KU application weekend before last—so on the third, I think it was. Yesterday (the tenth) I got a slightly-worried-in-tone email from KU admissions, saying that my child had started a KU application but hadn’t completed it, and basically asking without directly asking if there were there any concerns that were holding her back from submitting it? We were all amused.

Further addendum: Why in the world is the University of Kansas KU and not UK?

Which college would my daughter be? Something that tends to fly under the radar for most people, while being pretty good at what it does. One of the CTCL colleges, probably, but one of the more traditional ones, so not something quite so unusual as Hampshire or St John’s—maybe Earlham (both the Midwestern LAC tradition and the Quaker ethos fit her well) or Reed. Scanning the list, though, I’ll end up with the New College of Florida, because it’s a public honors LAC, which is a model she very much likes (though she’s not applying to anywhere that fits that description).

German food: Käsespätzle (southern style, not northern) and Rouladen! (I actually never liked Rouladen until I learned to make my own—everything depends on the choice of what kind of pickles and mustard to use.) I liked the German bread a lot when I was first there in my late teens, but now that I’ve grown up and get to pick my own breads to eat, and thus am not limited to Roman Meal and Wonder, that part of it feels a bit less special when I go there.

Free Slurpee Day: Now if only I lived in a state that had any 7-11s…

@itsgettingreal17 I still have that UKY page up for 2016. Did you want to know any specific scholarship?

2016: The Presidential Scholarship = Four-year awards providing the cost of tuition. Requires a minimum test score of 31 ACT or 1360 SAT (M+CR) and a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.50 on a 4.0 scale.

2017: The Presidential Scholarship = Four-year awards providing the cost of tuition. Requires a minimum test score of 31 ACT or 1420 SAT* (M+EBRW) and a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.50 on a 4.0 scale.

Thanks! @flatKansas How about the Singletary?

@dfbdfb, why is University of OK OU and not UO?

@itsgettingreal17 singletary 2016: Four-year awards providing the cost of tuition and an allowance for room and board. Requires a minimum test score of 33 ACT or 1440 SAT (M+CR) and a minimum unweighted GPA of 3.80 on a 4.0 scale.

@dfbdfb why is Ohio University not the University of Ohio? Seems inconsistent with every other state. Then again the fact that the one with “state” in the title is flagship, also seems inconsistent.

We have a first draft of the common app essay! Emailed out for review!

He’s gone with prompt 4. “Describe a problem you’ve solved or a problem you’d like to solve”

Not sure if going with one of the least popular options is a good thing or a bad thing but it’s definitely an S thing.

Is it bad that I want to hack into his email and read it?

I will ask of course but…I want to read it. LOL!

Well of course there are multiple errors on D’s transcript. And it’s so difficult to read. Ugh!

@carachel2 wrote

If that means somebody will actually be reading D18’s google email account, I’m all for it! Maybe the hacker will remember to forward important stuff to me. She has a brand spankin’ new Apple 6s (first apple product in the family, and she’s paying for it herself).

I tried to update Chrome on our antique Motorola tablet and it told me that the OS was not supported. Geez.

I can see the girls’ unofficial transcripts online. I’m not sure what errors I’d be looking for…

@mtrosemom UNR is on our radar, my nephew attends school there. But I think S17 isn’t interested partially because of this. Just wants to do something different I think. I do have a good friend who lives in Reno & loves it, who’s son just graduated UNR and was happy there. Should probably take a look at it but IDK.
