Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@CA1543 School let out here the third week of May but it seems to me the district is drifting to a pseudo ‘year round’ schedule. We have a fall break, a spring break, a very long holiday break AND three days off for Mardi Gras which is very serious around here! It has it’s pros/cons but with college visits, summer job, etc, it is feeling like a really short summer. Fortunately, Fall break is right before the first round of EA apps are due so I’m using it as a buffer.

School starts in mid August here.

We are in the airport about to begin our Magical Mystery Merit tour!

@mamaedefamilia Do you mind refreshing us on the schools?

School starts mid-August, ends late May here. One calendar quirk: We only have a short winter break, which seems odd for a place where so many people travel a pretty good distance to escape the midwinter cold and dark—you’d think we’d start back up again a week into January, rather than as soon after New Years Day as we possibly can.

@mamaedefamilia what schools are you looking at? Enjoy your tours!

Totally unrelated to college…woke up last night at 12:58 when I heard a loud bang. I thought it was my daughter (her room is upstairs directly above mine which is downstairs) maybe jumping or something had fallen off a shelf but it wasn’t her. It was the SONIC BOOM! Living in orlando, I’ve heard it a bunch of times, but it never ceases to amaze me.

@greeny8, I remember hearing sonic boom many many time when I was a kid. The effect of military planes flying over the neighborhood. Then they banned supersonic flight in populated areas. Haven’t heard one since. Hearing one again would bring back memories.

UA put up the new scholarship requirements, I am so glad they didn’t raise the ACT score or GPA for the Presidential scholarship for free tuition. DS is really leaning on going there.

Also he had Senior pictures taken today…

CA will be unavailable from July 21 to Aug 1. This message (below) just arrived via email.

I don’t think anyone needs to tell son to relax and take a break from applications!

You’ve created your Common App account and have a head start on your college applications. Great job!

Between July 21 and August 1, you won’t be able to access your Common App. That’s because we’re refreshing the system for the new school year. Don’t worry, your account will roll over to the updated system.

What can you do in those ten days?
RELAX - take a break from applications!
Explore nearly 700 colleges at commonapp.org.
Visit the Virtual Counselor for helpful tips on the admission process.
Work on your essay.
Learn more about how to pay for college.
Tweet us about what you are doing during your break - #commonapp.
Whatever you decide to do, we’ll let you know as soon as the system is ready on August 1. Then you can come back to your Common App refreshed and ready to shine!

I was just going to post the same info @MichiganGeorgia. Here is the link for anyone interested: http://scholarships.ua.edu/types/out-of-state.html

Based on the few posted scholarships with new SAT score info, it looks like the approach so far is direct conversion from 1600 to 1600 scale.

I-) \m/ :!!
@greeny8 I heard about that BOOM! You can thank SpaceX. It was from the spent Falcon 9 rocket, coming back down to earth for a landing.

So far behind I am like the wayback machine.

My D started her translations from Ovid’s Metamorphoses this weekend. Changing into a tree sounds better than a cockroach.

Trying to squeeze Latin III in over the summer, which includes band camp and working, means applications are moving very slowly. She has an auto-admit safety that she can apply to now with no essay, but she is not motivated since actually having to go there would be “an end of her world” type event. I guess that is the definition of a deep safety, better than a hot stick in the eye, but not by much.

My son just shouted downstairs that the Common App is telling him to take it easy for the next 10 days :open_mouth:

Don’t think that’s going to happen son. I was just about to start whipping up a frenzy with him today to get things rolling asap.

D17 is loving my hometown so far (Boston). Her funniest comment? “I’m not the palest person anymore”.

I am probably 40 pages behind, but decide to go forward first. We had fun at Yellowstone, and now going to Rocky Mountains with DS20 while D is in Lehigh Camp. Kinda feeling guilty, but we knew that she will not join us if she was admitted to any summer programs she applied.

On related Sonic Boom note, D is touring NASA with her camp today. You know that your child is attending the right camp when she texted you in capital letters “WE ARE GOING TO NASA” when she was admitted

First crisis. D17 submitted the short answers for the Pitt application by accident. She was expecting a ‘SAVE’ button, and before she knew it she had hit ‘SUBMIT’ with no way to pull it back from the binary gods. She hadn’t filled out the 3rd one yet (“Why is Pitt so rad?”), since she was going to wait for our visit on the 30th. She was freaking out. I asked her why she wasn’t editing the Google Doc like we talked about…but I guess it was just me doing the talking, and no one was listening.

Oh, well. I called admissions (she was still sobbing) and she just has to submit another set of answers, and they will sort it all out on the back end later. We will re-confirm when we visit, but I don’t think anyone is going to be reading those right now…she hasn’t even submitted the app yet.

I wish it were fake-kid. He handles stress so much better.

@2muchquan I’m so sorry for your D!! It was a painful lesson to learn. I’m sure she will be ten times more careful in the future. Poor thing.

“I wish it were fake-kid. He handles stress so much better.”

I just busted out laughing at that one :).

Hugs to your real kid about the save/submit snafu, though.

@2muchquan all those graphs, charts, spreadsheets, lists, binders etc, and you guys space out on SEND button, lol. I feel bad for your daughter, but it will be fine. I’m certain that the admissions department has received far far worse. And you caught it early. So good news is that they now know you are really interested in their school if you are working on apps in mid July while the majority of teens sleep in, go to the beach or play video games. I think it will be fine!! Don’t stress.

I agree with @MotherOfDragons – we need a Facebook-like ‘like’ opportunity for subsections of a post. I often laugh at something but am too lazy to follow up with a comment, and sometimes just liking the entire post does not convey the section I find amusing.

Of course, if this is my biggest problem today, things are just fine!

Son is apparently stealthily working on an essay. I did not ask which one, just happy to see movement.
