@RightCoaster Thanks for the idea! I need to track the number of mistakes D17 makes during the application season (or pre-season…whatever this is). Time for a new spreadsheet!
Seriously, the kid wants to go to an Ivy (not really) to be a neurosurgeon (not really) and she can’t even click the right button!
(In her defense, why can’t you edit your answers if you haven’t submitted the app yet? It’s just one section of the app that she ‘Saved/Submitted’)
@2muchquan my son wouldn’t even hit the WRONG button. He’d probably finish 98% of the app, and then get distracted by some incoming text messages/youtube video and just forget the whole thing. Seriously.
S is back from his screenwriting workshop at University of Tulsa. He loved writing and reading screenplays 8 hours a day and then watching movies at night. No worries of a sunburn on this trip. The professor and grad student he worked with were really helpful and told him that it doesn’t really matter where he goes to school as long as he works to get internships and make connections. He liked the campus but felt it was too small for him. He really likes those large universities which I can understand given that his HS class size is 1000+. Anything smaller than 15,000 students feels small to him.
S got a letter this weekend about the BU honors program. We did not look at it when we toured in March. Did any of the recent visitors to BU take a look at the program? The website’s information was pretty generic and I wasn’t sure if the program is worth the extra effort or not.
S has not even started his essays yet but starts school on 8/22. The real nagging will begin when we get back from vacation at the end of next week.
@2muchquan we are finding these submit section by section apps a gigantic pain. There are several others just like that. What if we want to skip around??
Re: Bama’s scholarships: I hope no one was adversely affected. 1450…geez!
@itsgettingreal17 1450 is what CB’s concordance table converts to a 1400 in a direct conversion. A 1400 was the previous cutoff.
I wish Wake Forest would stop informing me that they invited my kid to apply. This has been happening about 1x a week. Ok, thanks for letting me know. shrug
@2muchquan I’m stressed out for her! That kind of thing seems like it could happen SO easily and I suspect will likely happen on at least one application for my real kid…who is not known for patience or double checking things.
It should save to the app and submit all when done so a kid can review every section prior. Allowing one portion to send independently is all kinds of messed up if you ask me.
@2muchquan, I also got a laugh out of that one. Too bad fake kid wasn’t the one who accidentally hit the submit button and real D worked on the essay questions in Google Docs! And now for the next episode of “As the World Turns”…
@Mom2aphysicsgeek I know how they arrived at the number. I just think it’s harsh as I don’t think the concordance tables are fair. (D is well above all these thresholds so doesn’t affect us but I feel bad for all those that were counting on UA keeping the SAT score the same). It will be interesting to see how # of scholarships is affected, if at all.
@itsgettingreal17 we keep getting the same e-mail. If tuition wasn’t $64K, my DD might apply.
@itsgettingreal17 The “good news, you are invited to apply!” letters and emails are insulting, to be honest. Do they think we are stupid? If they came with a fee waiver, now that’s an email of a different color.
I agree @STEM2017, I would feel a lot better getting a waiver attached to one of those emails. I’m not to psyched about spending $$ on apps so that I can shell out more money to them in fall 2017.
@longwood
Thanks for the laugh, that’s a hysterical thread! Oldie but goodie
@itsgettingreal17 - The thing is that UA had already changed the New SAT requirement for kids attending this fall so it wasn’t unexpected. However whats worse IMO is that the kids who have a 29 used to get 1/2 tuition. Now it’s a flat dollar amount so in future years it won’t equal 1/2 tuition.
@longwood I know that thread well. I’ll have her look at it. It’s classic.
@itsgettingreal17 Silly Wake Forest. They should know that inviting a teenager to do anything (unless its a pizza party) is unlikely to produce results.
Why couldn’t UA be a little farther north, in/near a large city, and have majors that my kid is interested in? Is that really asking too much? Oh, and maybe an octopus or spider for a mascot would be cool too.
Got another flyer from Pitt. I swear it’s turning into a daily occurrence. IMO if they were really interested in DS they would waive the application fee regardless of whether he goes to one of the Tour events…
@2muchquan - UA doesn’t have any majors that your DD is interested in? I’m kind of surprised about that. One reason DS is interested in UA is that they have a number of choices which is good since he has no idea what he wants to do…
