Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@2muchquan I think that every time UA comes up in conversation (well, maybe not the mascot part lol) Why, oh why, do they not offer high-level Arabic and IR???

@2muchquan Did you look at the New College at UA? It looks like if you have a reasonable program of study that they don’t already have, it might work. It looks interesting and there is a video that talks about the program.

@2muchquan I am sooooo right there with you. Dd has decided to sweep the spider out the door bc they require history and science subject tests from homeschoolers and that web was not going to get spun.

Maybe fake kid can find a major there?

@WhereIsMyKindle Or Russian?

S got the Wake Forest Invite, along with Yale, Cornell, BC, UCLA, and a passel of schools that we can’t afford even if he was accepted. For D15, a fee waiver would make her look. For S17, he doesn’t care and a fee waiver wouldn’t entice him to look harder.

@2muchquan
But Alabama’s mascot is an algae bloom, how cool is that?

@WhereIsMyKindle We are right there with you. D loved UA, but the Arabic program was not sufficient for her. Too bad. Their accounting program is excellent.

Educate me on Arabic. My DD is very interested in taking this in college. She will have 5 years of latin, which she loves, but knows a second language will help her with business. Does UA offer enough Arabic for an IB major?

@jedwards70 I was not familiar with New College, thanks for the info. D17 is interested (like a few others here) in Neuroscience or CogSci or perhaps Genetics/Genomics. I don’t think you can simply build those from the current offerings at UA (although I could be wrong). Of course, I think she’d do fine with just a Biology degree, with a concentration in some area. But I don’t think she would need the New College for this, I would hope she could work with an advisor to come up with what makes sense. Personally, I don’t think she necessarily needs to specialize in NeuroSci or CogSci in undergrad, but that’s her choice right now.

@CaucAsianDad Even an algae bloom is cooler than an elephant.

Which reminded me of a funny thought I had as I was investigating schools: I would like to see the sports headlines when one USC plays the other USC: Gamecocks vs. Trojans. I bet they have fun with that one.

Thank you @longwood …so needed that laugh…may have to exit Starbucks since my maniacal laughter is garnering side glances…

Exactly @Mom2aphysicsgeek

@jeepgirl UA offers only 6 semesters of Arabic. I would think someone desiring to actually use Arabic in a business context would need a class per semester plus at least a semester study abroad.

My d is an outlier in language as she will be entering college already at the advanced level (typically, fifth semester). We are spending much time identifying schools that will have enough classes for her, which is why she is focusing on Language Flagships and a few others.

@WhereIsMyKindle

I keep finding myself thinking the same thing but wishing they had a strong Russian program! Darn it!

@jeepgirl As whereismykindle stated, I don’t think UA has enough Arabic and study abroad options for any student that is interested in attaining any level of fluency. My D hasn’t started the language yet. We limited our schools to schools where she could between courses offered at the school, extra-currics, and multiple study abroad, reach the desired level (superior). We came up with 14 that could work given our merit chase. The flagships, however, would be ideal.

Case Western is essentially shut down until after the convention. Carry on.

Yeah, that is a bummer for the students taking summer classes.

I read this article about CWRU & the RNC a couple of days ago and found it alarming. Of course, I probably should not be trusting The Gothamist as a news source.

@2muchquan I can imagine how freaked out your daughter is. That’s the first we’ve heard on this thread but definitely not the last. Those submit buttons are a bit close to the save button.

RE Wake Forest: My son’s college counselor said the only people that apply to WF are those that really want to go there. Apparently, their app is a serious time commitment as they have 6 essays.

@itsgettingreal17 & @WhereIsMyKindle Thank you! Now I have a whole new thing to research!
