@MotherOfDragons Don’t underestimate the power of a good safety!
@MotherOfDragons i got to spend some time this past year at WPI, my younger son was involved with some robotics competitions there. I took a tour one time just to see what it was all about and I liked it more than I thought it would. They’ve made a lot of improvements and the buildings and facilities were nice. It’s not as cool as Northeaster, MIT or BU even. But it does produce good students and those students get good jobs. It’s easier to get in there than a lot of the Boston schools. Downside is Worcester is kind of dumpy with some creepy people lurking around and you are not really close to Boston at all.
One of my best friends is going to Chicago and she got a scholarship. She’s not too worried about the winters since we live in upstate NY. It gets cold and snowy here. Anyway I’m so glad all that onslaught of college mail is done. I know I got a ton of mail from Fordham, UVM, New School, Stonehill College, and some place in Colorado. Oh and I got daily emails from Randolph Macon College up until about a month ago
The PITT’s postcard today said if you sign up to any of listed events (on the card), you will get a tuition waiver…
OK, I’ll play. Here’s D’s last 10 schools in her inbox (not including dups):
- Illinois Wesleyan
- Wofford College
- IU Bloomington
- Rose-Hulman
- Calvin College
- College of Charleston
- Kenyon
- Ithaca College
- Ohio University
- St. Louis University (SLU)
Interesting mix to say the least.
@whataboutcollege - I hope you meant fees waiver not tuition waiver, otherwise they will get million apps
GOTD (game of the day): Here are S’s top 10 schools in his inbox
-Wake Forest
-Yale
-Oregon Tech
-Florida Poly Tech
-Syracuse University
-Georgia Tech
-Cornell University
-Boston College
-UCLA
-Ohio State
None of which he is going to apply to.
@srk2017 Yes. Fee waiver… Probably thinking about tuition waiver too hard…day and night…lol…
:))
Too bad I don’t get to see D’s inbox And she is notorious email deleter/cleaner/junk-sweeper…
Colleges on the wish / consider list - not decided which to definitely apply to though (major interests EE & CS but likes CE / IT too):
MIT
Stanford
Cornell
GA Tech
Carnegie Mellon
Rice
Tufts
Northeastern
USC (So cal)
RPI
Case WR
WPI
RIT
May look at Univ. of Md. Coll. Park, Lafayette or Lehigh, UPenn also.
Last 10 in the in box. I didn’t screen for top 10 by volume but Temple, Ohio and Lawrence seem to be sending the most email and snail mail at the moment. Definitely a varied mix.
Goucher
Temple
Ohio University
Western Washington
Allegheny
Bradley
Oregon Tech
Syracuse
Lawrence
Reed
My son gets way better snail mail info from colleges versus the crap he gets in his email inbox. I’d trade some of your inboxes for ours, at least he might be able to get into a few of those I see you all posted, lol.
@CA1543 - Some of the colleges in your list are on out list also, but for pre-med. DS will probably apply for bioinformatics/computational biology/systems biology or Biochemistry.
Here are the last 10 in S’s email inbox:
Boston Univ.
Hofstra U.
Syracuse U.
Penn State
Purdue
Yale
UCLA
Boston College
St. John Fisher
SUNY Polytechnic
Only 2 of those are ones he is considering (Boston U. and Purdue) and both of those are likely to fall off the list before he actually applies. He is pretty consistent about unsubscribing from unwanted emails, so he doesn’t get nearly as much email now as he did a few months ago.
GOTD: I don’t have access to DS’ email, and the snail mail spigot seems to have turned off. Maybe he had his mail forwarded to Colorado. Since he left 3 weeks ago, his snail mail is only postcards from:
Ohio Six College Tour
Illinois Wesleyan
UChicago
Rutgers
Clemson
@srk2017 Let us know what you think of UCSD. Kids here in our town are kind of down on it because it is sort of a rival to our local UC for 3rd/4th ranked UC. It’s stronger than our UC for biology-related stuff, though, which is your S’ field.
No fee waivers here.
GOTD
George Mason
BU
UPitt (two emails today)
Dartmouth (LOL)
Furman
VCU
Washington College (in Maryland)
Rose-Hulman
UNH
Ithaca
UCLA
Princeton (ROFL)
Best attention-grabbing email subject line was “How’s Ya Momma an’ Dem?” from Tulane’s NOLA Lingo Primer email. JIC you didn’t get one and were wondering, “How’s ya Momma an dem?” is a local greeting used to inquire after one’s family and friends.
DS continues to have a blast as a camp counselor. I’m really happy for him (I even encouraged him to take the job so he didn’t look back and regret missing out on a great experience) EXCEPT for the following tidbits of reality that threaten to send me into a tailspin:
% of CA Essay complete - 0%
% of summer reading complete - 0.005% (that a guess based on about 2 pages read out of 9 books)
of college websites researched to finalize “the list” = 0
Total # of schools visited to-date = 4.
@ynotgo - Sure, I will give my 2 cents. UCSD Bioinformatics major thru 3 different departments (Biology, Chemistry and CS). Is it advisable to schedule visits with individual departments also?
S just messaged me about Colbert and RNC, so I asked him the GOTD question:
Penn
Yale
WUSTL
Washington College
Boston University
UCLA
GTech
Cornell
Boston College
Humbolt State
Sarah Lawrence
But, he says he has filters set up for places he’s never herd of, so those aren’t in his inbox.
@Ynotgo I thought UC rankings are 1. Berkley 2. LA 3. San Diego 4. Santa Barbara 5. Davis. Looks like San Diego, Santa Barbara and Davis have similar rankings.
I can’t see D’s inbox. We scrolled through on Saturday night to make sure there weren’t any updates to the info sessions, and there were a bunch of colleges, but they didn’t stick in my head because they weren’t the four she was going to see.
I’m interested to see if she goes through them when she comes home and adds any to the Binder of Destiny. Although I’m sure she’ll use the App of Deciding rather than the Binder of Destiny.
