@stlarenas …welcome! Our kids sound a lot alike…I just told her while I was really proud of her ACT score I will be equally as proud if she passes her driving test this Friday! :))
@stlarenas Which state are you from?
QOTD- Swag…we have only bought a little bit. My DD bought 1 t-shirt at UA, an umbrella at USC because it was raining, shorts/tee at UNC and a tee at Wake. I know she will not wear some of the stuff once decision time comes. Once she makes her choice, our house will be full of stuff. My husband loves to buy stuff:(
@carachel2 Her 2nd (the 1st already expired) drivers permit expires August 28th. I am hoping she will be ready to take and pass the test before then.
@paveyourpath we are in Missouri
@stlarenas yay Missouri!
@stlarenas Some schools have a fly-in program where a student applies for an opportunity to visit the campus. The criteria vary but there are some interesting opportunities. I saw a list of schools on a thread earlier today and I’ll try to find it and post it.
@flatKansas I saw that your kid and a couple of others have been accepted to KU. I love that campus…but even with the MSEP it is still quite a bit more expensive for us than MIzzou ( which is our max)
My daughter wants to visit Pittsburgh State in Kansas…that one we can afford. And she may qualify for the honors college there. Hopefully that could be a nice safety school for her.
Swag, Back during spring break, we visited Bryn Mawr, Barnard, Wellesley, and Brandeis. Which school’s T-shirt D bought? Harvard!!!
@stlarenas I’m surprised stingy KS hasn’t completely weaseled out of MSEP yet. We are playing the same game (find places cheaper than in-state), so hopefully we all have success at it! I’ve heard good things about Pitt State, but I don’t know any kids that have gone there.
** Swag ** * As I begin typing * We bought ZERO swags as S17 is a tightwad and we never stop by a gift shop or a Coop …
- I realize I do have a collection of college swags because * ** I ** and S19 like to stop by at gift shops. :))
We will have a bunch more in two years I imagine.
Whenever I am at a college campus for a meeting, a workshop, or visiting colleagues or friends, I used to collect Pocket File Folders with College Emblems in the front as they used to be $.99 (and now they are more like $3.99) and are the cheapest souvenirs. I probably have all top 50 college folders plus some more.
When I splurge, I get a college mug. I believe I have all Ivy+SM mugs. :))
But then, I have almost all Disney movie mugs from Disneyland/WDW too =))
Just an fyi that most of the flyin programs are diversity initiatives and mostly small liberal arts schools.
Is there a magical way to know when something (such as SAT/ACT+writing) is recommended by a school? For example, I found lists at Compass Prep and CB that had some schools on S’s list as recommended or required to do the essay version, but there’s zero mention of it at those schools’ sites. Obviously if the school doesn’t mention it, it’s probably not required, but how can you know if its recommended? (Obviously the answer is emailing admissions, but I was hoping there was a DIY way.)
Alternately, if a school mentions SAT/ACT tests, do you default to assuming they mean the versions without writing, or with?
Yes, that is true but diversity is relative to the school. Diversity could be socioeconomic, URM (which at the LACs Asians are considered URM), first in their family at college, females in engineering. What is factored in as socio-economic or URM at each school is the mystery.
@flatKansas Two ways: 1) check the application page - most schools usually have a detailed page regarding application requirements and sometimes a checklist; 2) the common data set (section C)
Here is a list of fly in programs that was linked in a College Admission thread a few months ago:
http://www.globalmi.org/blog/2016/college-fly-in-programs-for-2016-2017
Some deadlines have passed but many are just opening their applications.
We r probably gonna apply for the Grinnell fly-in. Thanks for the link Dolemite, I’ll have to see about others.
I’m grimly trying to get through this political season without unfriending people. Mostly it’s not the content, it’s just too much blatting on both sides. Ugh, enough already, back to puppies and kittens and cute babies!
Military colleges-not on our radar, mostly because neither kid has the physical ability. I think it really has to be a passion for the kid, and it didn’t make sense to D17 to apply that route because it’s not her passion or calling.
We are not a well-rounded family. We’re kinda pointy in some quirky areas… It balances out with me not liking to not be good at something, so the kids are required to at least get competent with something, but they don’t have to be good at everything. They are pretty darn good at a few things, but they don’t really suck at anything. Well, they stink at doing homework.
D15 (almost 16) got back from camp yesterday and we had a blissful 24 hours before she got pissed at me for asking her to stop grousing about a girl at her camp who kept doing gross stuff-apparently asking to hear about the fun stuff instead was “invalidating her feelings”… Oh well, it was nice being loved for 24 hours. Now I’m back to the eyerolling and “whatever”. Awesome.
Swag-D17 said she doesn’t want to jinx anything before she’s accepted, so no swag. We’re a minimalist family who strongly and irrationally believes in not jinxing things. @-)
The apply to the application for application is done for Bama-wasn’t too painful for D17 :). She finished all of the stuff on last week’s to-do list with a minimum of grousing-breathing a sigh of relief here.
$2 in the Swear Jar…
@MotherOfDragons D15 is going to graduate from HS what year? You’re confusing me.
It is a little confusing… S17 happens to be 17 years old and HS Class of 2017…but…
a D15 would be Class of 2015 and 19 years old and a rising Junior in College…
my S19 is almost 15 so perhaps MoD meant D19.
In other threads, # means number of kids, 1st kid, S1, 2nd kid S2, etc.
I clarified there that I do not have 17 kids and S17 means Class of 2017…
QOTD: No swag purchased. Son thinks it’s a jinx.
