Buying school swag: The only thing (aside from bottles of water!) we purchased on any school tours was a sweatshirt for the trailing D19 at [s]The/s Ohio State University. My D17 isn’t really into college sweatshirts, and while my D19 is, she gets a lot of them from me when I go various places for academic conferences. (The past three years I’ve taken to getting her a sweatshirt only from non-US universities I’m near, so that she can continue to reasonably wear them once she heads off to whatever college she attends—no matter where you go, a Freie Universität Berlin sweatshirt is, I think, socially acceptable in a way that, say, a Maryland one wouldn’t be at Auburn.) D17 does, however, take the free t-shirts everywhere they’re offered.
It’s clearly too late, and I should go to bed: @MotherOfDragons, I initially misread your statement about your family being well-rounded or not with We’re kinda pointy in some quirky areas as * We’re kinda pointy in some kinky areas*. @-)
Thanks for posting @Dolemite. The Tufts program does a nice job of identifying diversity to include geographical, religious, and sexuality in addition to ethnicity, socioeconomic and first in family.
@dfbdfb You reminded me of a scene at a breakout session at tOSU the other day. A student sat way in the back of the room and was called out by the presenter (there were only 30 people in a lecture hall). After the initial wrist-slap for sitting too far back, he added: "Oh, and nice Vanderbilt shirt!
QOTD:
From a young age we trained D to seek out pencils and magnets in the gift shops from various vacations. At first it was more about maintaining space in the suitcases. We are surprised that the tradition has held and honestly she still mainly seeks out magnets and pencils even in the university bookstores. We happily oblige!
**Swag: ** No swag. DS is really very frugal. He doesn’t really feel like spending him money on overpriced stuff with colleges log’s on it.
@flatKansas The best way to find out what a school wants is to go to their web-site and look at their admissions pages, and read their instructions. If they are still vague about it you can call/email them and ask. (Best if your teen does this.) Or if they are Common App (or some other Application that’s already open) you can see what the online application states is needed.
I think some schools don’t really have all their information up about this application season. It’s still early. Last I looked the University of CA web sites still had last years dates & information. But as of tomorrow (August 1st) the UC Application is going up (you won’t be able to submit it till Nov) and I’m hoping the informational sites will be updated as well.
Does anyone know how soon my son would know if he got into Tulane University if he applied early action in August and how long does it take to get the scholarship information about how much he could get after applying to the scholarships.
I finally caught up for the weekend!
SWAG: S bought one tee form Arizona State U and got a free shirt from Ok U. Both schools top his current short list.
@MotherOfDragons For this year’s election, when friends ask who I support, I tell them I’m writing myself in as a candidate since I think I would do a better job. If a random lady from TX wins, you’ll know it is me! It really does help avoid this topic with people that are just trying to get a rise out of people. I can barely even read Facebook right now some of the post are just so inflammatory.
@carachel2 Good luck to your D taking her drivers test. S takes it tomorrow. I am FREAKING out that he will be driving on his own soon.
No swag after visits. He doesn’t want to jinx anything.
Ok, back from vacation and back to being a task master. He is taking his drivers test Monday, going in for a session with college counselor at school on Turesday, working on essays on Wednesday, and getting Wisdom teeth out Thursday. I’ll count on a few days of recovery and then back to college essays and summer reading.
Woah. D17 threw me a little shade tonight (thanks for that saying @MotherOfDragons) about college hunting. Gonna have to back off and hand her the wheel for a while. I don’t see this ending well.
No purchased swag here, either. D17 has not mentioned anything about it one way or another but I don’t see her spending money for stuff from a school she’s not yet attached to in some way. I’m sure she’d take freebies gladly though, if for nothing else than use as sleep shirts or for one of her various art projects
@2muchquan I woke up this morning thinking, dang it, I used D18’s age instead of graduation when I posted yesterday! I kid you not-this thought woke me up this morning! I am so grumpy with myself that I forget this thread is graduation year, not birth year! Mea culpa.
The plan this week is for D17 to look at the essays for the common app, pick one, and start working on it. I don’t have her scheduled to actually work on the common app until next week, let all the “it’s open!” furor die down a bit in case there are bugs in the program.
I can’t see the floor of the laundry room because of all D18’s camp stuff. The dog was sleeping in the suitcase-I was like, nooooo, no dogs in the suitcase! I’m going to have to lysol-vacuum-let the suitcase sit out in the sun for a few days. Camps are really hard on our luggage…
@stlarenas A 30 ACT has been enough in the past for a OOS tuition waiver at FSU (which brings tuition down to about $6,500 a year). You may want to take a look at them…In may ways comparable to Mizzou.
I stayed up way too late (and overslept my run) updating D’s admissions essays spreadsheet. All but 2 of her colleges now have open apps. Got her accts all set up.
@2muchquan that’s funny! Similar story at Duke info session but not a colle shirt. AO had the students stand and give name, state and school they attend. He pointed to a kid and said “from NY” what’s your name and school. Boys don’t pay attention to what they wear and the kid looked confused and said “actually, I’m from Maryland”.
S17 applied to Swarthmore"s fly-in. His essay was excellent. Some of the kid on cc said they got automatic app fee waivers just for applying to the fly-in program.
@Mom2aphysicsgeek IIRC, a while back you emailed the state dept or some such agency regarding the language flagships, asking about how an out of state student can pay for it? I ask because one of the senior members on another thread is encouraging a student that wants to double or minor in a critical language to contact them about possible funding.
