Nothing eases pain like a cruller!
Happy for her!
D has her first job working for a big corporation. I can’t tell you how many times she’s called or texted me today to help her with the new hire paperwork. :))
Do any of you not have Naviance at your kids school? If not have you looked at any of the following websites to help judge chances? All of these websites have personalized “predictions” of some sort - however it seems the results vary a lot.
College Data
Niche
Parchment
Admitster
Cappex
Anyone trust one more than the other?
No Naviance here. I’ve looked at Niche but not the others. Thanks for the list @stlarenas
@stlarenas They are about as useful as the What Are My Chances? threads
@Dolemite All of them? That is stressful for me. I’ve got nothing else to work with.
Four days into school, D finally resolved her schedule conflict! <:-P She had to meet with the counselors several times and wait for a specific class to open up, but in the end, she has her ideal schedule. Originally her schedule didn’t even have several classes that she needed to graduate! Luckily, she is nothing if not persistent and made sure it was all worked out. I was ready to step in if necessary, but she wanted to see if she could handle the situation herself. I’m rather proud of her.
QOTD: Are volunteer hours required by your school?
Nope, no required volunteering. The only graduation requirement that isn’t about a certain number of credits in each academic area is an independent scientific research project due before the end of junior year.
Common App: D has worked on the CommonApp independently except for any information she didn’t have the answers to. I will probably review it with her before she submits it for the first time just to be certain there are no errors.
@STEM2017 Did you try the NPC at rose-hulman? I found it funny in new and refreshing ways.
Volunteer hours: They used to be required at my daughters’ school (D17’s first year there), but no longer—they decided required and volunteer were rather a bizarre combination.
Common app GPA: Her weighted and unweighted are very close (less than a 0.1 difference—only AP courses are weighted, the school offers very few of those), but the weighted one is precisely a 4.0 and she likes the way that looks, so she’s using that one.
High school diversity: Coming late to this one, since I spent a while trying unsuccessfully to find high-school-specific numbers for my kids’ K–12 school, but the summary is:
[ul][]White: 69.2%
[]Hispanic: 8.9%
[]Asian: 5.4%
[]American Indian/Native Alaskan: 3.5%
[]Black: 2.1%
[]Pacific Islander: 0.2%
[li]Two or more races: 10.7%[/ul][/li]Looking at this, I’m struck by a couple things: First, Hispanic is coded by the school district as a race, not as an ethnic category, and second, I’d’ve thought the school was quite a bit whiter than the city as a whole, but it’s actually only slightly more. (Much lower Alaska Native representation, though, with higher proportions of Hispanic and multiracial students than are in the general community.)
JOTD: I’ve been on a bit of a jam-band kick the past bit, so: How many Grateful Dead fans does it take to change a lightbulb? None, they just let it burn out and then follow it around for a few years.
Transcript GPA - D’s school only uses a weighted GPA.
Volunteer hours - None required.
@dolemite Funny!
Volunteer hours: None required, more than 300 recognized at graduation with cords added to gown. D '17 will make it if she documents all the hours on the online system.
GPA on Transcript: Weight and unweighted listed.
GPA on last year’s school profile, hasn’t been updated yet.
SPECIFIC DATA FOR THE CLASS OF 2016
Weighted Unweighted
Highest GPA 4.7838 4.000
Highest Possible GPA 4.8000 4.000
@Dave_N That bottom data is filled in exactly like that on the counselor section of the CA.
@flatKansas No to Rose-Hulman NPC, but now I’m curious.
@dfbdfb Just downloaded “The Very Best of The Jam” after watching a documentary on them. Not sure if they qualify as a jam band, but it’s jamming on my headphones right now.
How do they calculate highest possible GPA? Depending on particulars of schedule it seems like it would be hard to figure out max weighted classes any one kid could take.
For anyone else with a kid who has applied to Pitt… Question for you.
It looks like they converted her ACT scores into new SAT scores and then super scored. Anyone else notice that?
@carachel2 what makes you say that? Where did you see that info?
A lot of counselor chatter in this thread. I think we all (me) need to mentally prepare ourselves for the Counselor Logjam that almost certainly will take place when school starts. I’ve no doubt it will be very frustrating especially to we CC types who pretty much have everything ready to launch.
@stlarenas yes to Naviance, but it’s not helpful for most of S17’s schools. Most kids here stay local for college. Still, it’s useful for the state flagship and a few others.
