Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@curiositycat333 UCSB and Riverside also want subject tests for engineering, although UCSB only lists Math II. We were effectively told at one tour that when they say recommended, interpret that as required.

@HiToWaMom So very sorry to hear that. Hope these is light at the end of the tunnel! Hugs…

A lot of schools on D’s list do not require SAT 2s. For the ones that do, would be math 2 and one of the sciences (mostly physics or chem) for engineering.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I need those kind words now… @4beardolls , @CA1543 , @whataboutcollege

@HiToWaMom So sorry that you are having to meet a financial obligation caused by someone else’s dishonesty!

@HiToWaMom - Sending positive thoughts and hugs your way.

Boo, @HiToWaMom - that is bad news! Can that ex-partner be tracked down? Hopefully things will turn around soon.

@HiToWaMom oh no! That’s awful! Sending positive vibes your way!

@ynotgo since your DC is 4 years younger and isn’t in college yet, I would go with the name he currently uses. No harm.

@HiToWaMom that is so unfortunate that the guy just skipped town and left your H with the bill. I do hope as well that he can quickly get another part time job, maybe even one he likes better. Sending good thoughts.

@HiToWaMom Yep. I feel your pain. We are in a similar situation. It is super stressful, particularly with all these college-associated and medical expenses looming. I hope things improve for you soon!

@mamaedefamilia , @LoveTheBard , @JenJenJenJen , @Collegecue , @greeny8 ,
Thank you for your kind words and thoughts. This is not the first time he lost his job so I kind of got used to it. But it’s always difficult (financially and emotionally).

@picklesarenice , You are in the situation situation as well? I hope something good will happen to your family, too!

@HiToWaMom hopefully they can track down the ex partner and recoup some losses. Hope H can find a better job too! I think it’s going to work out, I bet he finds a better PT gig anyway. Good luck.

@ Midwest67 It is normal that kids change there mind. There are stats out there. We had one quoted at one college that over 50% of the students change there major at least 1 time.

@CA1543 The schools we are looking at that require SAT II’s it is general to related to filed of study so Physics or chemistry and Math 2.

Son17 finished his essay, and I think it’s pretty darn good. It’s a decent read, unique topic, flows well and makes sense. I don’t think he could’ve done any better. So now we are pretty much all done, yay. He needs to fill in some better descriptions for his ECs on the common app. That’s all we have left to do really, shouldn’t take long at all. He is meeting with his GC to get some info forwarded to a coach next week, and he is meeting with a teacher writing a recommendation for him.
After that’s all done I think we are ready to actually start applying. He might actually apply ED to his 2nd fave school instead of #1. He thinks #2 school might be just as good as #1 in some areas, and there might be some extra benefits to school #2 that he hadn’t originally thought about. I think he actually has a better chance at school 2 anyways, and they might give him a fast answer back. That would be great to just have it all settled.

@HiToWaMom I am so sorry that you have to deal with this. Thinking of you!

@HiToWaMom Oh no! That’s awful - hugs to you and I hope the situation can be resolved in some way that doesn’t require you to take the full hit. :frowning:

In slightly better news here, D17 has expressed actual signs of interest in the Haverford and/or Bryn Mawr 4+1 engineering joint program with Penn where they earn a 4 year BS in the core science (chemistry or physics) at the LAC then finish 1 year at Penn and wind up with a M.Eng. from Penn (they take some grad level courses at Penn during the undergrad years since the schools are commuting distance.) We first learned of the program through Haverford, but now see Bryn Mawr offers it as well, and Bryn Mawr has the added benefit of offering merit scholarships potentially even larger than the big one at Smith. This is definitely going on the list!!

Thank you so much!! @RightCoaster , @jeepgirl , @thermom

Dang @HiToWaMom, that’s horrible. Can’t do anything from this distance beyond offer hope that things’ll balance out with some better news, but wanted to offer that, anyway.

@HiToWaMom I am so so sorry. I have been through 2 layoffs myself and my company was acquired by another much larger one, 3 weeks ago so I can relate to an extent. Even if you have been through it before and know that eventually it will settle and work out, it doesn’t make it any less stressful in the moment. Hopefully your H can negotiate to have the debt recalled and then work out a payment plan and find a better position in the long run. I am so sorry.

@stlarenas and others on the Lehigh v Layfayette. I’ve refrained from commenting as my info is tenuous at best but for what it is worth, I will share it. Close friend/classmate of S17’s has an older brother who went to Lafayette for his freshman year and really really did not like it and transferred out. I do not know if it was a west cost/east coast thing or what but he found it very preppy, intense and not friendly/happy at all. Lehigh was on early lists for us and in doing research it popped up on the Princeton Reviews 10 most unfriendly for LGBTQ. While I know, as does S, to take all of these kinds of lists with a grain of salt it was honestly a deal killer for my bleeding heart liberal S and we haven’t dug into it further at all. It was a 2015 ranking, doesn’t appear to show up anymore but it didn’t appear affordable based on the likely merit and aid offer so it hasn’t been worth it to look at it again.
