Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@WhereIsMyKindle She has so much going for her that I’m sure she will be competitive for some of those top $$ scholarships!

I hope so @Mom2aphysicsgeek Last night she was worried that her ACT isn’t high enough. I have never heard her say something like that. But she’s going to attempt the non-school-nomination path of the Wells and hope for a B-K invite. I need to see what else might be available at Oklahoma.

Now it’s time to get busy with school

You guys! S completed his first college app last night! :D/ It was a simple one for the state school he doesn’t really plan to attend, but still, one is done. And he completed his NMSF online app thingy too. I’m really hoping this means we’ll move forward fast over the next few weeks while he’s not working.

@whereismykindle Dd is doing the same for Wells and her test scores are probably lower than your dd’s.

Congrats @IABooks ! Fast and furious is an understatement!

Be sure to keep close track of each application. I made a spreadsheet with a checklist for each app. You’ll need to make sure each school gets test scores, transcripts, and LORs if necessary. I’ve heard horror stories about rejections due to one missing piece of the puzzle.

Good luck!

ETA: This just gave me an idea for a new thread.

@WhereIsMyKindle We are in the same boat. Hoping for a B-K. Didn’t know Indiana got a Flagship. I will check it out. I didn’t like the 3.4 renewal for the Wells but may need to consider it. But Indiana is so isolated. And I have a friend whose kid had to transfer after a semester because he hated it so much (4.0 student at IU however). hugs. It will work out.

@STEM2017 Good tip for going forward. When S asked, I suggested this one to complete first because it would be so quick and easy. No essay or LOR required, he already had listed the school for his free score sends and all academic info is self reported at this point. IIRC from D14, no need to send a transcript until much later, although she didn’t apply to honors and he will after he gets an acceptance just to cover his bases. I thought it would give him momentum and would be a good one to “practice” on before we fill out those where he qualifies for high merit, so we’ll see if that works.

I’m certainly not as spreadsheet oriented as others, but I’ll add the checklist feature to our shared Google doc to keep track of those requirements.

What does B-K invite stand for?

Banneker-Key at Maryland. Full ride. 150 scholars per year.

Thanks!

@longwood - I called the NMC a long while ago to check if S’s old SAT score would confirm NMSF standing and the answer is yes. I believe the window for which tests are valid is ~ a two year window.

My D17 is interested in applying to Colorado School of Mines. They have rolling admission with first notification October 1. When she checked the website for their application this summer, the website said: check back in September. So she checked today, and again, no application. Does anyone have any information on CSOM? If they start admitting kids 30 days from now, are we missing something? Thanks

DD just got accepted from her flagship State School! :D/
Granted, the application was very easy - filling in grades and ACT scores. No LOR and only one essay for the Honors program. She received the acceptance in two days from the college. Still waiting for the Honor’s program notification.

The good thing is, she now has at least ONE college choice!
The bad thing is, she still does not have a single Comm App essay done.
The real bad thing is, she doesn’t even have a finalized college list.

I will just take the good news for today.

Great news @4beardolls ! Congratulations!

@mtrosemom Thank you for the update. I guess I’m not caught up enough because S17 is not in the running for NMSF. Congrats to your S (and everyone else)!

@4beardolls, Congratulations!! Our flagship opens its application on Oct. 1st! I envy those who can apply already!

@4beardolls, Congrats. Will you share which state flagship generated this fast response?

Awesome news @4beardolls !

@4beardolls great news for your daughter. She’s got someplace to go!

Congrats to all on NMSF and admissions. Called CSOM and app is open next Friday if anyone else has it on their list. Have a great day.
