Good luck to all ACT takers. Best decision I took was asking DS to take September 2015 ACT with summer prep. So far no one has beat his writing score @ his school. I think from October, folks @ ACT lost their mind!
Yes, definitely wishing each taker a score for this being the final take!
I sent scores to some more schools on last Sunday and one school acknowledged receiving them. I don’t know if they got ACT or SAT IIs.
Good luck to all the ACT takers this weekend! May they all achieve their desired score!
Mini rant - D’s schools scheduled a mandatory SAT for all seniors in October. Not my kid. D is done. I will have D talk to her counselor. If they try to force the issue, I’ll get involved. I have no problem being “that” parent. I’m sure they all know me by now anyway.
Interesting tidbit. My niece was just in a major news publication as one of the leading, pivotal female execs in NYC. She graduated from a directional U in a non-NE state with a degree in “unmarketable field” (She works in a field 100% unrelated to her degree.) She is equally 100% my dad…pure business professional. She knows how to work and how to sell.
Love it.
Ooh, good luck to the ACT takers tomorrow! I actually talked D17 out of taking it again, and considering how fast her school year has gotten hectic, I’m glad. She’ll still have the Math 2 subject test in October though…
I’m 48 and DH is 50. I think I probably have you all beat for oldest parents though— my mom was 47 and my dad was 50 when I was born. Talk about late surprises!
I do not yet have a spreadsheet, sadly. I don’t even have a final list X_X and we’ve only visited 3 schools (one of which, Smith, is pretty high on D’s list.) Her thoughts have changed a lot over the last few months, so we’re going to try to squeeze in a few more visits before she has to start sending in applications for real.
We were all shocked when a friend showed up with her 5-month old at a lunch gathering discussing High School 30-year reunion. Actually there are two HS friends who are mothering toddlers. Their older kids graduated from colleges.
My college friends’ kids ages range from college graduates to 5-year olds. I do not know anyone having grand kids yet but I know it will happen soon. Hope no one has any more surprises
Good luck to all the kids taking the ACT tomorrow!
On the age front, I’ll turn 45 right before D graduates from high school, so I still consider myself to be in the middle of life. My parents had me, their first child, when they were both 20, but I was definitely not prepared for raising a kid at that age. H and I will be right on the threshold of 50 when S20 graduates and we’re left with an empty nest, so that should be an interesting experience.
YQOTD: D2 has six schools on her list, we have visited three, and I’m completely satisfied that it’s a great list for her.
QOTD: I’m 54. One of my HS classmates had 12 children and now has 28 grandchildren. Yikes!
Best of luck to all the ACT takers tomorrow!
For those of you who have patiently waited for 9 months to find out about NM cut off scores and made the cut off, there is talk on other threads about the confirmation scores needed. Apparently, the confirmation score will be in the form of a SI number. If that is not fun enough, parents that have called NM have been told they need more data from the fall SAT testing to come up with the SI so they will not be releasing the confirming SI until the end of the year.
Welcome @michiganbuckeye!
My son went to see the guidance and he asked about his class rank because they no longer give a number. Instead it is a percent They said he was top 5% 1st decile She said that meant top 1%. Is that how it works or is he making a mistake and maybe misheard her. Also if that is right will colleges know what that means
No ACT for D tomorrow because she decided she was done after one. It’s kind of a relief. Good luck to those testing!
D got a lot accomplished this week. She finished the second draft of her essay and I think it’s pretty strong already. She’ll have no problem making her self-imposed deadline of Sep 30. She also finished the Common App other than the essay. Yay!
@HiToWaMom, I’m sure different communities have their own rules, but my sister moved into a 55+ community when she was in her 40’s because her husband was over 55. There was not an income restriction. I think that would only be in some type of government subsidized housing. My sister’s neighborhood was just a regular neighborhood other than the 55+ part.
@snoozn the 55+ stuff here is definitely not government housing, HitoWa mom and I are not far from each other. But the apartments targeting that group seeks to be going for “affordable luxury” or at least that’s the tag line of one I drove by today. It’s odd though and really makes me wonder if S17s new Hawaii boss is confused. Unless it’s a supply demand issue and that’s the salary cap???
While I’ve no clue what the guy makes…it’s a manager position at a hardware store. So??? Lol.
Still. The point is. Senior housing at 55???
No. Just no.
None of my college friends have grand babies. A few from HS but not the majority.
@fun1234, if I understand your question correctly: Each decile is 10%, so top decile is the top tenth. The top 5% and top 1% of the entire class are both in the top decile—more precisely the top half and the top tenth, respectively, of the top decile.
If what was actually meant was top 5% of the top decile, then that’s the top ½% of the entire class. How many students does the graduating class have? If there are 200 students, the top ½% is the valedictorian; if there are 400 it’s the top 2; if there are 600 it’s the top 3; and so on.
With $500K
Rice would be on the list, since it is like Yale with a higher efc and better engineering program, UCB, UMich, Caltech, etc. . . . Our list would be entirely too long if we had $500K.
Good luck to all those in the midst of the application process! Looking back on this from a year out really is much easier than being in the thick of it.
Welcome @michiganbuckeye! And good luck to all heading off to take the ACT. S’s GF is trying to improve her math score this morning. I hope the new question types don’t trip anyone up.
ACT drop off. Fingers crossed.
Time for 32 cups of coffee.
