Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

Ohhh @Tgirlfriend —how simply awful. No words. Can’t bear to think about it.

So sorry @Tgirlfriend . So heartbreaking.

I am so sorry @Tgirlfriend.

Hi all, anyone else have a kid applying exclusively to UK/European universities? My son is closing in on his UCAS application to St. Andrews, University of Edinburgh and Oxford. He may also apply to Trinity College in Dublin. We visited the schools last summer - all great places and seem to be an excellent fit for his interests/major and his style of learning. He will be applying to History and International Relations (depending on the school). I’m feeling both excited and sad.

@mommdc yeah the instate school u are asking about is USF.

@Sincerelove The additional information section should really only be used for special circumstances (eg, circumstances that impacted grades or limited extracurriculars) not to expand on activities, awards, etc.

@Tgirlfriend How awful! Praying for the parents and your community.

@Tgirlfriend I am so sorry for your community and those families. How terrible.

@christygb D17 is applying to Bath, Durham, St. Andrews, Edinburgh and York via the UCAS.

We are visiting over Thanksgiving.

@Tgirlfriend Your community and your family is immediately in the thoughts and prayers of my family. Sending love and strength.

@VickiSoCal Wonderful! November should be a beautiful time of year to visit. The city of Edinburgh is a very special place, and St. Andrews was lovely as well. We attended the Edinburgh open day over the summer, and got a great feeling for the university and surrounding area. I’m excited that the UK system tends to give answers quite quickly, so it’s possible to have things settled before the first of the year. The stress of applying is front-loaded. Depending on Oxford (a long shot, but dream school), my son could still be waiting to hear on his first choice a little later, but hopefully one of the other excellent schools will give him some positive feedback.

@christygb My fear is that as a chem major taking IBHL chem this year, her acceptances will be conditional based on that score and we will be left waiting until July!!

Her first choices in the US are Cal Poly SLO (affordable and very likely to get in) and Willamette (very likely to get in but need merit $$)

@Tgirlfriend I am so sorry for that tragedy. Your family and community will be in our prayers.

@Tgirlfriend That is awful. I feel so sorry for the family. It is especially scary because we have a bad visibility going out of our parking lot to the main busy street. Thank you for reminding me to hug my D going out the door.

@Tgirlfriend Oh no! My thoughts and condolences with your whole school community. So sad.

My D17’s school has PE required all 4 years, every other day, athletics or not. For those who take sciences with labs, they try to alternate if the schedule allows. This year, D has PE alternating with Physics lab. We’re on a 9 period day, but lunch counts as a period. Sports are after school, and varsity sports are mandated to practice minimum 4x week. The school day ends at 2:40 and sports usually start at 3:00.

Unfortunately clubs also meet after school, so it can be tough to do both clubs and sports. D had to get special permission to be 20 minutes late to dance team practice once every other week so she could fit in National Art Honor Society.

So much juggling for these kids, ugh. Because we live 30 minutes from the HS, D gets on the bus to school at 6:30am and every day except Friday, she gets off the bus at 6:00pm after dance team practice.

xc is six days a week and now they are to run on their own on Sundays starting this week, so actually seven days a week!

@Tgirlfriend – I am so so sorry to hear that sad news. I can only imagine how heartbreaking it is. Sure makes so many things feel unimportant. I hope your community can pull together help the family and all affected get through this. You all will be in my thoughts and prayers.

@Tgirlfriend, that is a worst nightmare. I am sorry for your community’s loss.

@Tgirlfriend So sad… when tragedy like this hits, it just makes you reflect on what is the most important thing in life. I hugged my D17 and told her how much she is loved AND please drive safely… I can’t image what the family is going through right now… Hugs to your S and his friends!

Is anyone considering Hofstra? Over the weekend realized that they have been stalking DS for long time (to another email id he uses) and sent him selective app and promised to consider the app quickly and also for scholarships. It wasn’t on our radar but they do have a combined BS/MD program. Medical school is relatively new but ranked around 80th. DS was born in their hospital, so will they consider that? :))
