Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@kac425 both FAFSA id’s? Do you have 2 kids or is there something else that I need to learn. I started to get D’s ID today, do we need one as well? Is not sure if we are going to fill it out, but want to be prepared.

Yes the student and one parent needs a FSA ID

Both will sign the FAFSA with their ID before submitting

I think there is a sudden growth in CASPer (College Apathy Slacker parents) population ! :))

To be fair, DS wrote one essay and has gotten the English teacher feedback.
He needs one more Required essay before he can submit anything. [-(

My DS is bright, but also riddled with anxiety about the college application process. Several times throughout the process he has frozen, scoffed at our inquiries, unfrozen and expressed thankfulness for our support. As he is only applying to universities in Europe, his application is somewhat straightforward, with just one very brief, pointed personal statement applied to all programs. He did the bulk of the work last year, completing the SAT I and II tests to meet the requirements of his choices. I’m proud of him for doing that. He’s applying to Oxford, so the deadline is Oct 15 and he’ll have all of his applications completed at that point. Only thing left will be taking Oxford’s History Aptitude Test in November. Then it’s wait and see.

I’m looking forward to ditching Jekyll & Hyde I’m living with and enjoying the last few months with my guy, who I love so much. I’ll be happy to end this tightrope act of giving him the responsibility create his own future, and supporting him with some less than gentle prodding every now and then so that he doesn’t miss his chance.

Jekyll Hyde

That’s perfect!

@stlarenas my daughter has a weird/loser example for every safety school on the planet. Or at least in California.

I find myself singing the Katie Perry song to myself a lot: “you’re hot and you’re cold, you’re in and you’re out, you’re up and you’re down…”

D17 and D18 are 18 months apart, are completely different in just about every way except test scores and some physical mannerisms. D18 would love to be bff’s with her sister, older sister is more aloof and standoffish. So, some squabbling, but usually peaceful. I do spend a lot of time working on respect and empathy with the older one for the younger one, and D18 likes to jump to the worst conclusions all the time with D17, so I work on teaching her to give people the benefit of the doubt and to look at stuff from the other person’s perspective. I’d like them to have a good relationship when they’re adults and not required to be together all the time.

Recovering from a stomach bug today. Ugh, that’s what happens when I go over a friend’s house-she’s got germ vectors, I mean toddlers, everywhere. Missed the entire day of school, bummer.

Hopefully D17 will have a completed application for me to proofread tonight, although I confess I don’t really feel up to it and I’ll just say hey let’s look at it this weekend.

I’m getting better with the I Swear Not To Talk About College jar-I only had to put one IOU in there for D18 this week.

Essay burnout here…No and Yes

No: S17 finished and polished his CommonApp essay in May (school and GC driven), has submitted 2 completed RD apps with early merit $ deadlines (each with 2 supplementals), met this morning with his CC @ 7am who gave final blessing to his ED app which has 5 supplemental essays…hoping to push the send button tonight or tomorrow

Yes: Burnt out on UChicago’s annual "flippin’ crazy"essay, Burnt out on MIT…not the essays (they’re done), but the supplemental mumbo jumbo, Dead in the water for State flagship Honors essay

Check pleez!! :-S

I think my D is experiencing App Process fatigue right now… Our seniors have too much pressure…Hugs to all of them!!!

@Calimom3 " She keeps taking schools off her list because she doesn’t want to do the supplementals."

Yep. Supplemental essays officially ruled out Wake Forest for us. I didn’t have the heart to tell him that’s exactly WHY they have supplemental essays - lol - to rule out the lazy people.

Now I can’t get that song out of my head @MotherOfDragons :D/

I’ve been avoiding this board because everyone is so productive, and we are… not.

The latest frustration: Sometime between when the school showed me a transcript on 8/8 and when they started mailing out 3 weeks later they changed S’s schedule and one of his required classes disappeared. I found out from UA, so its holding up his admission. I’m so over all this. So now I have to try to get a class back on his schedule AND have them send a new transcript. Well technically transcriptS because we should probably resend to anywhere he’s already sent, in case they all start noticing the same problem. X(

For anyone who’s not familiar with the song:

D18 just got home from school and promptly started throwing up.

D17 and H are flying out tomorrow for more college visits.

Gawd.

What is the deal with small liberal arts colleges in the north west and fire twirling? Willamette, Reed, Lewis and Clark, and I’m sure all the rest, are all featuring fire twirlers in literature and online.

@Agentninetynine My kid hates sun too! Good thing she’s applying mostly to schools in Minnesota and Ohio!

OK, I’m getting the sense from the last few pages of posts that having your generally sweet, considerate child turn into a surly, snarling, tangled ball of stress at the beginning of senior year is completely normal. This is reassuring.

She really wants to press send on something, anything, but she is waiting on a detail from the GC, who has gone out of town for the week. Sigh.

The good news is that the senior thesis prospectus is not, in fact, “terrible, awful, and stupid.” It’s actually pretty good and almost ready to turn in.

Congratulations @jedwards70 on A&M acceptance!! <:-P <:-P <:-P

Now if I can get DS started on Essay B or C… [-(

According to Naviance, there are 25 students already applied to Rutgers! How come Rutgers is the only school appears to have someone applied?

@traport Wake Forest is on my D’s list too. She hasn’t ruled it out yet, but those supplements are rough. I have a feeling she’ll apply but might not put the effort needed to actually get accepted. We will see

fwiw, at S17’s school, CC earlier this week told a clump of students not to bother applying to Wake if you haven’t stepped foot on the campus…you won’t get in. Now obviously, this is not a universal truth, but still found it surprising since the school is 10 hours of drive time away.
