Parents of the HS Class of 2017 (Part 1)

@curiositycat333 in the case of these 2 schools, no, they don’t want anything extra. Some of his other schools do have an extra essay if you choose test optional but since we already sent them it’s irrelevant. I’m just going to send them for these 2, it’s $48 not $96 so not sure what I was thinking there and I don’t think it helps him at all to not send. I just needed that gut instinct confirmed.

@LoveTheBard I am so sorry. I dislocated mine once and have had frozen shoulder, it’s not fun at all. best wishes for a speedy recovery.

@eandesmom I haven’t looked at the CDS for those schools, but is there an advantage for your S being male at these schools? There is for a lot of places these days if you calculate the admit rate separately for male and female applicants.

Throwing in our Naviance data for you:

Ithaca (53 applications, 28 acceptances)
GPA average accepted Regular: 88.43 Early: 90.36
ACT: Regular 24 Early: 25

Allegheney (this is only based on 5 total applications (2 acceptances), though)
GPA average accepted Regular: 83.51 Early: 88.52
ACT: Regular 19 Early: 21

@disshar, we are going to a USC hosted dinner on Monday night. Do you mind sharing a little about what it was like? How many people were there? Did they show slides or have some sort of presentation or just informal conversation? What did people wear? What didn’t excite your child about the school? Thanks for any info!

@thermom that’s tough to say. All of his schools have more females than males, however the female admit rate is also higher. Does that mean the stats of the gender pools were equal and if so, the girls have the edge or just that the guys were lower in stats and if so, how low is low? How can one tell?

In theory I would think a male at an LAC is helpful and he may be geographically desirable if the school cares about that at all. Ithaca does not consider geographical residence but Allegheny does.

EA is a substantial boost at Ithaca so he will do that. It’s brand new at Allegheny so while he will be doing EA there as well, there are zero data points as to how well it works as it’s only been ED in the past.

thanks for the additional data points!

Dd received her first acceptance today–Truman.

Yeah, @disshar And did they write your kid a check or was it scholarship cash?

@Mom2aphysicsgeek Congrats!

Congratulations @Mom2aphysicsgeek and dd!!

@klinska, What school are we talking about easier ED rules, and front loading Aid. I would like to know…

@Mom2aphysicsgeek CONGRATS! Is she excited?

@Mom2aphysicsgeek @carachel2 , congratulations! @LoveTheBard , take it essay and take care!

Anybody having fun doing CSS? D came over and said “it looks painful”. I would appreciate an% completion indicator so that I can estimate how much more of the torture… It seems to be endless on the income page!! I finally saved and exited!

@eandesmom Not enough data from our midwest school for Ithaca on Naviance, but for Allegheney (based on 8 applications and 8 acceptances) the GPA average is 2.94 (out of 4.0) and ACT is 28.

The average ACT score from our school is 30 so for Allegheney it might be skewed a little high.

Congratulations @Mom2aphysicsgeek ! <:-P <:-P

DS17, rather than revising essays, went to Homecoming dance. I guess, he will be dancing for you :D/

@LoveTheBard Hope the recovery and PT is smooth. :x

@SincererLove, what do you need to pull together to do the CSS? and approximately, how many hours so far? i know so little, and am so intimidated. I am not well versed, so please share…

Congrats @carachel2 and @Mom2aphysicsgeek <:-P

@carachel2 Not exactly. A couple of weeks ago she was thinking it might be a really good option. I have PMed posters whose kids have gone there; they are a smaller LAC public. Via that info it sounded like a great choice.

She had emailed a bunch of schools over the summer and received no response from a few. She emailed them all again this week and the Russian prof there was one who just replied and it was a huge letdown. The response was *we offer 5 hrs per week of instruction at the elementary level and 3 hrs per week for yrs 2-4. Some of our students at graduation pass the level 1 test. (She is a level 1 right now.) That is the extent of what we offer. *Not a whole lot to get excited about from that response. :frowning:

She is definitely keeping it on her list bc overall it has a lot to offer, but this was just a huge unexpected. She is still processing it all.

Congrats @carachel2 and @Mom2aphysicsgeek !

Adventure was the original text game with “a maze of twisty passages” and all variations of that wording. We used to have comprehensive maps,of those mazes at my first job. Xyzzy is an exit on the way to Vegas.

Got my parent essay done for the brag packet and the NMSF essay got mostly completed, so progress.

@Mom2aphysicsgeek sounds like a mixed blessing of a congrats but it’s still an acceptance to be celebrated.

@carachel2 congrats!!! That’s very exciting.

Congrats on the acceptances!! @carachel2 and @Mom2aphysicsgeek <:-P
